Food Scene

It’s the perfect landing point for fresh seafood and panoramic views of the ocean. It’s home to a quirky population of harbour workers, creatives and residents living in houses that cling onto the Port Hills. Soon to host SailGP’s adrenaline-filled racing in early 2023, Lyttelton has long been regarded as the gateway to Ōtautahi Christchurch from the sea. Over time, the historic port town has become a haven for foodies and top eateries, found only a short trip from the inner city.

Lyttelton’s Asian-fusion eatery, SUPER, is nothing short of what the name suggests. Super’s fare is simple, well thought out and just plain tasty. SUPER = super. Housed in a stunning old building – in fact, the oldest standing building in Lyttelton – SUPER offers delicious food and drink with a focus on sustainability, flavour and fun. Owners Sahni Bennett and Joseph Quested opened in February 2018 and diners from near and far have been flocking ever since. SUPER’s fare is simple, well thought out and delicious. The menu hosts a range of Asian-fusion style dishes perfect for devouring alone or with a group of friends at any time of the day. SUPER Brunch runs til 3:30 each day and boasts a range of exciting items like green tea and manuka smoked creamy mushrooms served with schichimi edamame puree on sourdough or hash. The bar menu offers nibbles and their ever popular bao buns of which the pork belly with hoisin, apple chutney and pickled cucumber are a favourite. For dinner start with a small plate (komono) like usugiri beef and finish with a large plate (omono) like the local fish served with burnt butter, kombu floss, sesame chilli pak choi and rice. Great and food relaxed atmosphere

Visitors will be tantalised by the scent of sweetly roasting coffee beans from the Lyttelton Coffee Company. Enjoy a leisurely brunch while watching the busy port and surroundings. There is a focus on sustainability with the use of reusable materials in the kitchen and the lack of plastic in the public areas. The cafe uses its brickwork walls to showcase local art and craft, hosts musical performances and is known to be the venue for craft workshops. TIP Lyttelton Coffee Company – grab a seat upstairs for the stunning harbour views and savour freshly roasted coffee. There is a substantial counter food cabinet together with a chalkboard menu.

Comfortable bar offering paps style food. Great spot for a wine or beer. Somehow, in just a small space Civil and Naval manages to embody all that is Lyttelton: it’s cosy, achingly cool but equally approachable and gives you a burning desire to return as soon as you’ve left. Tucked in on Lyttelton’s London street, Civil and Naval is housed in a beautiful brick building which was historically home to DH Ludlow Civil & Naval tailors. The fit out is simple and elegant and the open plan design lends itself perfectly to beers on balmy nights or snuggling up by the fire – always raging on cooler days and always making the space extremely cosy – in the more chilly months. Beneath the C&N imprinted leather menu cover you’ll discover a whole lot more reasons to fall in love with Civil and Naval. The team here know a thing or ten about good food, beer, wine and cocktails – or in Civil and Naval speak: grub, ale, plonk and hootch. Offering a very well thought-out sharing menu dotted with memorable plates such as miso butter coated edamame beans, hand cut chips and bottomless aioli (genius) and delectable deep fried cauliflower with maple and chipotle, it’s well worth visiting this spot just for the food.
