Sightseeing

The new visitor centre is ready for you!!! Turtles/Mon Repos: They highly recommend visitors who would like to join a nightly ranger guided Turtle Encounter at Mon Repos (7 nights/week excluding 24, 25 & 31.12) to book at least 1 month ahead of times! You can visit Mon Repos Turtle Centre’s cafe, shop and indoor courtyard areas free of charge. Open seven days a week 9am-4pm, excluding Christmas Day and Anzac Day. During turtle season (November to late March) the centre reopens nightly (closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve) from 7pm till late. Usually turtle nesting time is Nov-Jan, turtle hatchlings best viewed Jan-Mar. Evidently, it is very popular and I just wanted you to be aware to avoid disappointment if you plan to see the turtles. Mon Repos beach closes overnight to protect turtles from 6pm-6am between Oct-April. Only ranger guided tours are allowed during that time to ensure survival of maximum turtles numbers. The coastal tracks (walking/bike tracks), boardwalks and Turtle Centre are all open during the day. Take mozzie/sandfly repellent with you, though! If rain is forecasted, please bring along some wet weather gear. Most likely it won't be cold, only wet. Please be aware that umbrellas are not allowed!

our coastal strip is most likely one of the flattest you have come across in Australia and, the Hummock is the only hill around! Actually it is a low volcanic hill between Bargara and Bundaberg. The eruption for this hummock occured about 1 million to 900000 years ago. The erupted basalt lava flowed west to Bundaberg, south to the Elliot river and east to the Bargara coast then eventually flowing out to sea. You will be surrounded by rich, volcanic soil: perfect for agriculture and your dinner table!
