Food Scene

Franklins is a local brewery/restaurant. The restaurant/bar has a cool local vibe and a General Store that you can wander through 5 times and still not see everything. They've got everything from unique gifts to wine and beer (a few good local options), candy, and toys. Just like any true General Store, it's packed to the gills. The food isn't anything special but they've got burgers, ribs, and some American classics. The beer and local experience is good.

A local chain that's so much more than a coffee shop. It's a bar, a restaurant, a tiny book store, and most days you'll find people lounging/hanging out for hours... Hipsters-a-plenty. Check out their Happy Hour M-F 4pm-7pm.

Parks & Nature

If you're up for a nice long walk, take the Northeast Branch Trail from just up the hill by the house and in either direction you can walk, run, or bike for miles. It's a nicely paved path and when the weather is nice, you'll see any number of locals out and about. From the trail at our street, you'll follow a portion of the Anacostia River. Some days, you may even see people fishing.

Arts & Culture

Sightseeing in our Nation's Capital is something you shouldn't miss! Even if you've been here a hundred times, there's still something worth seeing. Most museums are free and if you just want to get outside, walk the National Mall, see Jefferson, Lincoln, the Capitol, but don't do it without your walking shoes! Museums that are not free, may still be worth the spend. Our favorite monuments and museums include the Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Monument, WWII Monument, and the Air Force Monument.

We love the Portrait Gallery! It's the home of the presidential portraits and there are always new exhibits. The gift shop is lovely and the courtyard is a zen place to take a break from DC crowds and traffic.

Nice outdoor seating. Bring your own food from a local takeout option (you can even pick something up from Dum’s just around the corner), then run a tab inside and enjoy their patio. This is definitely where the locals go. They have heaters outside too!
