Local info

Neighborhood This is Butchers Hill. (from Wiki) As its name suggests, Butchers Hill was once home to butchers and poultry preparers, many who were German American and Jewish American. It was a village prior to the Civil War. Although today it is considered to be less affluent than Fells Point, it was once the more prosperous community of the two. This is reflected in the larger size of the rowhouses. Butchers Hill is in proximity to more gentrified sections of Fells Point, the draw of Patterson Park, and the employment center on Johns Hopkins Hospital. Many artists reside in the neighborhood. A portion of it is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[2] Many of the homes in this area have recently seen extensive renovations and urban development, and as a result, the neighborhood is increasingly popular among young professionals. Butchers Hill is a popular residence for students, residents, and staff at the nearby Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is one of the neighborhoods eligible for the Johns Hopkins "Live Near Your Work" grant incentive program toward down payments for full-time employees to purchase a home in the neighborhood. Laura Lippman's novel Butchers Hill tells the story of a private investigator working in this part of Baltimore. Fells Fells Point is about a 20 minute walk, a short scooter ride, or a quick Uber. Fell's Point is a historic waterfront neighborhood in the southeastern area of the City of Baltimore, Maryland. It was established around 1763 and is located along the north shore of the Baltimore Harbor and the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River. The area features many shops, including antique stores, restaurants, coffee bars, music stores, a municipal markethouse with individual stalls, and over 120 pubs. Located just east of the famous "Inner Harbor" (formerly referred to as "The Basin") adjacent to Baltimore's downtown central business district and the Jones Falls stream (which splits the city, running from northern Baltimore County), Fell's Point has a maritime past and the air of a seafaring town. It also has the greatest concentration of drinking establishments and restaurants in the city. Harbor East is about a 25 minute walk. Harbor East is an affluent area known for its vibrant dining scene, with trendy fusion restaurants and slick bars overlooking the docks. Homey Italian restaurants, delis and cafes dot the busy streets of nearby Little Italy. The Civil War Museum examines the city’s wartime role and links to the Underground Railroad. A harborside promenade leads towards the aquarium and interactive museums at Inner Harbor. Canton Canton is a neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The neighborhood is along Baltimore's outer harbor in the southeastern section of the city, roughly two miles east of Baltimore's downtown district and next to or near the neighborhoods of Patterson Park, Fells Point, Highlandtown, and Greektown. Canton's traditional center is O'Donnell Square, a park bordered on the north and south by O'Donnell Street, to the east by South Potomac Street, and to the west by Linwood Avenue. O'Donnell Square is home to several bars and restaurants, an art gallery, a coffee shop and a number of other businesses and residences, as well as a former fire station. In the 2000s, developments have added focus areas to the neighborhood, including the Canton Waterfront Park and Maryland Korean War Memorial, the rehabilitated American Can Company building, two marinas and a public boat launch, the Clarence 'Du' Burns Soccer Arena, and new bars and restaurants. Canton is considered one of Baltimore's most popular neighborhoods and continues to see growth as more development opportunities come into the area. Patterson Park Patterson Park is an urban park in Southeast Baltimore, Maryland, United States, adjacent to the neighborhoods of Canton, Highlandtown, Patterson Park, and Butchers Hill. Patterson Park was established in 1827 and named for William Patterson (1752–1835). The park consists of open fields of grass, large trees, paved walkways, historic battle sites, a lake, playgrounds, athletic fields, a swimming pool, and other signature attractions and buildings.[1] At 137 acres (0.55 km2), Patterson Park is not the city's largest park, however it is nicknamed "Best Backyard in Baltimore."
