A unique place indeed. The right side is a hair salon and the left is a restaurant. They often do a themed menu and lately I've seen Fridays they have Tapis and live music. It is a small place and reservations may need to be considered. But, my reason for recommending the place is for takeout of their dessert, Key Lime Cake. OMG it is the best dessert in the area! I often call in the morning and they will have slices ready for pickup in the afternoon.

One of the best places to eat in the area. Outside waterfront sitting is available but be aware of the bugs about two hours before and after sunset. Bug spray is your friend outside during that time. Great drinks - often stiff. Appetizer - Banging Shrimp. Dinner - Almond encrusted catch of the day or catch of the day stuffed with crab. They can get busy on the weekends so be patient. Best night for avoiding crowds are Tuesday and Wednesday, but it's worth the wait even on the weekends.

Parks & Nature

Manatee winter hangout. You can boat or kayak to see them just outside the spring entrance in the winter. There are also tour operators that can take you there. Depending on the manatee population, you may be able to swim into the springs. During summer, there is no mantee around but the springs are open to swim and hangout. Note, there is no water access from inside the park (i.e. walk-in), only by water. For those that have no interest in being on or in the water, you can go through the main street entrance and see the springs from a boardwalk. Contact me for additional details as necessary.

North America's oldest Hipppo "Lu" is there. My mom took a picture of Lu on her honeymoon in 1975 and during her recent visit snapped another photo of ol' Lu. There are also lots of native Florida animals there to see including manatee for the summer visitors. The lagoon where the manatee are there is a underwater viewing area. Great place to get closeups of manatee eating without getting wet. FYI, Disabled Veterans have free admission + one guest.

Inglis Dam & Island Recreation Area is hands down my favorite place to run. It has about 2 miles one way of beautiful paved road, and a little incline near the turnaround point. It is shaded and very quiet. There are additional dirt paths around the perimeter totaling about 6 miles. We’ve been there probably a dozen times and never seen more than 4 people on the trails/pavement. Horses are allowed on the dirt paths but I have only passed one once. Great for family walks, runs, etc.

Everything Else

The local's local place. They serve great food breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday-Sunday. They also serve beer and wine. They have a few groceries, beer, gas, non-ethanol gas, local pepper jellies, etc. Breakfast - shrimp and grits or island burrito. Lunch - chicken wings or Cuban sandwich. Friday dinner is often a special meal. Thursday dinner is local night where you can learn about the local gossip or maybe even score a fishing buddy. Typically the first Sunday of the month is a community potluck.
