Traveler advice
Don't miss
Grocery Stores near the house
* WholeFoods (20 min walk)
* Harris Teeter and Target (20 min walk)
* 7/11 (there are two different ones, both about 10 min walk)
* Costco (about 10-15 min walk)
* CSV (two stores, both 15 min walk)
Don't miss
Food hubs near the house
* Pentagon Row (15-20 min walk through the park, lots of restaurants and outdoor spaces)
* 23rd street (23rd between Fern and the highway, less than 10 min walk from the house, very old school)
* Del Ray (very hipster, lots of restaurants and shops, 10 min drive)
* Old Town Alexandria (old town vibe, very cute, by the water, food and small shops; use Old Town Alexandria Waterfront as your target)
Don't miss
DC Museums
* All Smithsonian museums are FREE and amazing.
* You might need to get online reservations for some if it's a busy season (in particular African American Culture museum, or going to the top of the Washington Monument).
* Parking on the National Mall is hard to find, try going a block to the right off the Independence Avenue (towards the river). Usually I can find something on 9th st SW between Independence and C st SW.
* Great people watching and place for a picnic of just rest in the Lafayette Park (the other side of the White House).
Getting around
Water Taxi
You can take a water taxi to connect between several piers in the area. Those are inexpensive and I lovely way to travel around the city. More details here https://www.cityexperiences.com/washington-dc/city-cruises/water-taxi/washington-dc-water-taxi/
Getting around
Metro
Trip Planner allows you to enter your starting location and your destination and get several routes: https://www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/ TIP: when plotting travel from the house try selecting “only metro” option since it’s a short walk to the metro stops. Otherwise it might tell you to go to a bus stop and take a bit to the metro which would actually just add more time.
