Derry is the only city in Europe that has a complete wall surrounding the city. These walls gained significance when 13 apprentice boys closed the city gates when King James II when he tried to convert Protestants to Catholics which led to the Siege of Derry. The Siege lasted 105 days. In 1969 The Apprentice Boys held a march around the walls but began antagonising the Catholics of the Bogside which led to the Battle of the Bogside. The results of this was it was the first time British Troops were deployed in Northern Ireland. This is when the Troubles really began to turn violent.
