Staunton is also about 30 minutes away. It is a very historical town with great restaurants and boutique shopping. A stroll down Beverly Street is a treat in itself. If you have time, catch a play after dinner at the Blackfriars Playhouse. It is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. The Staunton train station still operates the Cardinal line from New York City to Chicago. It was an important supply depot during the civil war. There is a beautiful park just outside the city- Gypsy Hill Park with many activities and music throughout the summer. See schedule and more info at www.ci.staunton.va.us

Dayton Virginia is known for the many Mennonite working farms. Take a drive off the grid east of Rt 42 and you will likely see some hard working people raising cattle for milk and beef, chicken, turkeys, vegetables, and more. Take a walking tour through the old town of Dayton and visit the Heritage Museum with a unique "electric light map" of the civil war battles fought in the Shenandoah Valley.

If you miss the Dayton Market on Rt 42, this is a good substitute and still had some different things. There is a great kitchen store with EVERYTHING and a fabric store that quilters will love. This is the best place to buy some local cookbooks. The Mennonites are FANTASTC cooks! And they have written some of their best recipes for you to try for yourself or a gift for the chef in your family.
