Hikes, Near and Far

So many places to hike, bike and run!
Aside from walking around the lake (~2 miles, be careful of the occasional car), you can access the Ames Lake Forest 1/2 mile from our driveway. It is hundreds of acres of working forest (which includes clear-cuts) connected to hundred of acres of Tolt MacDonald Park. To get there: turn left at the top of the driveway. In about 1/2 mile a gravel road forks off to your right, with another very steep gravel road forking just off of it. That steep road leads to into the forest. This is a destination mountain bike trail system, and you can find more info in most Washington online trail guides. To keep your hike to 3 miles or so, stick to the main road. For more adventure try the side trails--but be warned they are mountain bike paths, and thus wind all over the place.

This hike is under 3 miles round-trip, though it can seem longer due to steep sections. It runs along a beautiful river, through forest that is on its way back towards old growth. The prize at the end of the trail is a bridge over twin waterfalls. This trail is great for hiking.

Might as well mention the most iconic hike of Snoqualmie. The hike itself isn't so much, though it can seem steep to someone unaccustomed to hiking. But the falls are spectacular. Bonus if you're there in time for a meal at the lodge, which is pricey and so good.

This is an old railroad line, turned into a gentle gravel path along most of the valley. You never really get away from the road noise, but you can definitely ignore it. Most of the trail borders farmland, but in some places there are wilderness areas which are great fun for dogs. They are designated hunting areas during birding season, though. This trail is great for walking and biking. Parking lots are spread out along the trail. Most require a Discover Pass permit.

Cherry Creek Falls Trail takes you up a mostly gentle rise through mature forest, along Cherry Creek, and eventually to a lovely swimming hole with a delightful waterfall. Perfect place for a picnic on a hot summer day. This trail is great for hiking and trail running. Parking at the trailhead can get crowded.
