Places to stay in Bridgewater
Come unwind in our exclusive tree house getaway, nestled amongst pine trees. Take a short walk to enjoy the river.
This 400 sq. ft. treehouse includes a walnut spiral staircase, salvaged barn beams, a marble tile shower, and a gas fireplace. The kitchen is equipped with a two-person bar, gas stove + oven, hammered copper sink, refrigerator, microwave, kettle + french press, and basic utensils. The loft bedroom includes a queen bed with elegant bedding, skylight views, and a hanging chair for reading. The bathroom includes a marble tile shower with hot water, a hammered copper sink, and fresh white towels. Enjoy lovely views from the porch with the sight of the river. Unwind with a hot bath in a two-person tub on the deck. Be aware the treehouse is in the trees so bugs will be present especially in the evening. We have complimentary natural bug spray and candles. It's best to leave the lights off on the porch at night so bugs won't join your porch party. The treehouse is located on our 5-acre property. It is NOT deep in secluded woodland. It is 70 ft. from the road and 200 ft. away from our home. It is 16 ft. off the ground so height is in your favor for seclusion. There are appropriate window treatments on all windows. You may be visited by our dogs or cat. Our two Jack Russell's, Daisy and Cooter, love to say hello to anyone who comes on the property. The gate at the top of the stairs is to keep our furry friends away. We prefer if you keep them off the deck so they won’t beg to be let in. However, Mable, the cat, is capable of climbing the gate. Let us know if we need to come to retrieve her. This treehouse was relocated due to waterway regulations. It is now farther from the river but on the same property. You will still have river views and river access.
  • My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time here! The treehouse is absolutely beautiful inside and out, as well as the river across the way. Joshua was kind enough to make a campfire down by the river, which was wonderful. There was more than adequate cooking supplies for my partner and I to cook a delicious meal, and the space was a blast to relax in. The outdoor bath was super nice and peaceful. All in all the treehouse is an amazing place to stay and I strongly recommend staying here!

  • Very clean, beautifully crafted! A wonderful spot for a weekend getaway.

    Anna2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Joshua and Hope’s treehouse was more than amazing! The views were beautiful, the location was relaxing, and the memories we made will last a life time! Everything was absolutely perfect.

  • As avid treehouse travelers, we feel we've found the best one yet! The space is inviting and thoughtful - every detail considered. The sounds of the river provide a peaceful setting, along with the visits from all types of birds. This place is a little slice of heaven on earth!

    Andrew2019-05-08T00:00:00Z
  • I had read several reviews before booking this treasure but now I have experienced it, no words can describe how special the Joshua tree house really is. The hosts were responsive, friendly and made this visit easy. The Joshua tree house is made with LOVE. Every little detail was well thought out. The only time my wife and I left was when we had to eat dinner, and it was hard to leave the property. It was the most relaxing weekend I have ever had. Joshua and Hope give you everything you need, and more. Leaving was so hard. We both cried knowing how special the weekend was staying at such a special place. The weather was rainy, but being inside, birdwatching from the deck, listening to the river didn’t stop us from enjoying this weekend. Thank you for sharing this with people Joshua and Hope. This is truly a treasure, gem and diamond in a rough. We will be coming back to stay here 1-2 times a year, hands down. I wouldn’t change one thing about the hosts and the property. It was just perfect. I would recommend it to everyone

    Jaimie2019-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • We thought we would really like this place, but didn’t realize how much we’d really LOVE it until we stayed for a night. We were just so amazed at the high level of craftsmanship in every detail of the treehouse. The decor and small touches were lovely and thoughtful, and the setting was so peaceful by the river. Sitting on the porch drinking French press coffee was all the *entertainment* we needed, but there’s reliable WiFi, too. Super easy process and communication from booking to check in/check out. You will not regret your stay here!

  • Great place. Just as expected!

    Dwayne2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Doug's cute cottage was very welcoming and cozy. He was quick to respond to messages and accommodated us, even with our last minute booking. I appreciated the accurate posting description and the small touches in the cottage that made it feel homey. In addition, I am grateful for the perfect balance Doug had of being a gracious host and giving us adequate privacy. The amenities were also great: tea, coffee, water/soda, chocolate, popcorn, silverware, microwave, fridge, Netflix a wonderful heating system, you name it - Doug had it! Great spot to recharge; we felt safe staying here and will definitely book again if we're ever in the area.

    Stephanie2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Dougs place was exceptionally clean, very convenient especially if you are traveling right off interstate 81. Lovely amenities, drinks, soaps, snacks etc. so glad to know this is here as I travel this way often. Thank you!

  • This was my second time staying at the Little Cottage. It is so well located to the places that I was visiting in and around the area. It’s perfect for one or two people, and easily accessible from I-81, but in a very quiet neighborhood. I really appreciated the little touches like the coffee maker with extra coffee pods, teabags, creamers and sweetener packets. Doug is a wonderful host, and I hope to be able to stay there again on my next trip to the area.

  • Beautiful, clean, and spacious, with nice farmland views. It's got a luxurious but comfortable vibe. Comfortable bed with nice sheets. The water takes a sec to warm up, but the bathroom was nicely stocked and has a nice shower head. Kitchen wasn't super well equipped, but had enough for our needs (frying some pancakes and heating up leftover Chinese food). We heard the neighbor's rooster crowing in the morning, but it wasn't enough to wake us up.

    Laverne2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Brad’s space was just what we needed and hoped for! My friend and I wanted to experience Shenandoah Nat’l Park, and we were about a 20 minute drive from the middle entrance. The loft itself was beautiful. It was clean, had all the cooking utensils and kitchenware we needed, and access in and out was simple and fast. We would recommend Brad’s place to anyone interested in exploring the area!!

Renovated first-floor apartment (~1940) offers original flooring, open floor plan, screen porch, clawfoot tub, comfortable furnishings, hand-crafted features like repurposed doors-to-shutters and oak cabinetry original to this former dentist office. Walkable/bikeable to Bridgewater College, town restaurants, parks, ice rink, golf, putt-putt, and the river. Easy drive to local winery, wedding venues, state parks, fly fishing, skiing/indoor water park. Perfect for visitors and traveling workers.
It's inviting, welcoming, and charming in its simplicity. Guests comment on the cleanliness, comfort, convenience and attractiveness. Quaint features from the original 1940s pair with contemporary design to make this original dentist office a welcoming location for local college visitors, vacationers, and traveling workers who want all their home amenities when away from home.
It's walkable, friendly, convenient, and SAFE. Bridgewater is consistently listed #1 or 2 on Virginia's safest towns (lowest crime rate per capita).
  • This home is absolutely wonderful and is walking distance to many things to do and see.

  • I recommend staying with Brenda in Bridgewater Va. The house is very clean and the decor is very nice. Our host during our stay was available to us anytime we needed her. Great little town with lots to do.

    Linda2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • It was a great girls weekend at a convenient and uniquely renovated dentist/office home!! We really enjoyed ourselves and the host was wonderful.

    Tracey2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • My family loved the architectural features, amenities, and especially the location! The apartment was very cozy and the beds were very comfortable. We will certainly be back again!

    Dru2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Brenda’s home is beautifully renovated, warm and welcoming. The attention to detail is exceptional. She is a wonderful host and I look forward to returning on my next visit. Its proximity to Bridgewater College is perfect for parents!

    Kristin2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Really beautiful entire floor of house but felt like whole house, really interesting blend of historic Victorian and modern. Quick and easy communications, easy check-in and check-out, everything was great thank you!

    Matthew2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Brenda's home has been remodeled and set to welcome everyone who stays there. Brenda added little touches that were unexpected like snacks, beverages, and toiletries. Because it is an older building, do expect an occasional knocking when the furnace kicks on. Luckily, Brenda accommodates each room with "white noise" devices to drown out the sounds to give you a peaceful nights sleep. Beautiful little home.

    Mandy2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay was absolutely wonderful. The home is lovely, full of history, and right off the main road. Brenda was an amazing host, and even gave us a brief tour of the home’s historical quirks & features. We would love to come back again!

Our Bridgewater home is right on North River in Rockingham County yet we are only 2 miles from Bridgewater College and all that the town of Bridgewater has to offer. We are 15 minutes from all that Harrisonburg has to offer. We have many activities available; sightseeing, dining, swimming, canoeing, campfires by the river, or simply sitting in our pavilion overlooking the river while the sun sets over the hill. Coffee and Tea is provided. Early check in is an option but please ask first.
This is the basement of our home, you will most likely hear my wife, myself, and our two little children running around above you. The ceiling is insulated, but sometimes it can get a little noisy. The kids usually go to bed around 8:30 and get up around 7:00, they are the noise makers. Available for your use is a canoe with paddles but no life jackets. You may use our wood for campfires while it lasts. Feel free to ask in advance if it is a priority for you. We have a dog named lady, she is incredibly friendly and will love to follow you into the house, but please don't let her in. fishing is always an option, trout are stocked pretty far up the river. I have caught a few bass, one trout, and a ton of suckers. Suckers are considered junk fish and they kind of own this section of the river. This is private property so you won't need a license.
Bridgewater is regularly ranked in the top 10 nicest town in VA. Recently it placed #2. It has at least 8 parks, our favorites being Wildwood and Oakdale. For such a small-town Bridgewater has a lot of options for dining. There is also a mini golf course along with a par 3 golf course priced very reasonably. Crime rate is incredibly low and our neighbors are the worlds best. We love our location and we think you will too.
  • It's a gorgeous place that exceeded our expectations by far. I totally recommend staying here - you do not want to miss it.

    Florian2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Had a great stay. Roomy living area and great bedroom space. Would definitely recommend

    Kira2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome spot, beautiful scenery, and sparkling clean house. Local pub had great food and the property has amazing scenery. Mike and his family have a beautiful set up.

    Jonathan2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Mike's accommodations will surpass your expectations. Beautiful scenery outback and very clean inside. The place has all necessary amenities. Located far enough to feel secluded but still close to town. Most importantly, Mike and Hannah are very friendly and hospitable.

    Stevie2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay with family!

    Haran2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We loved this place! Close to town, spacious, clean, a well-stocked kitchen, on the river, we’ll-decorated. Look for the trundle bed underneath one of the queen sized beds. What Mike says in the listing about the noise of little feet running over your head is definitely true so be prepared to get up early (6am) or bring ear plugs! Mike was a great host, very responsive to our needs.

    Kris2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Mike's place was very good. Great well equipped kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, clean bathroom. Location is very convenient: close to shopping and Massanutten resort attractions ( we came for the water park and snow tubing, just wanted bigger quoter place for the family). The only drawback was that during our stay the air outside (but not inside surprisingly) had strong "farmlike" smell. It made it harder to enjoy great outdoors.

  • “Tiny Home takes Big Place in Our Hearts.” This was our first tiny home experience and we are in love. The space was clean, well planned and decorated to perfection. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere we’ve stayed before. Sustainability is felt throughout and is supported by the rustic aesthetic and design. The open and green landscape of the surrounding farms can be seen from every angle through the walls of windows. We loved waking up to the sheep and being able to watch the family care for them. Nathan even encouraged us to come out and called in the herd for us to meet. Their sweetest puppy giving us love was also a plus. I booked this weekend stay for my partner and I over the coldest weekend of the year and was nervous about the heat situation. Don’t be scared! We were plenty warm and cozy with the stove, portable heater (provided) and plush linens. Despite having 19 degrees as the high all weekend, we had an amazing time, at home and within the community. The area has plenty to do; farmers markets, caverns, trails and hiking, breweries and shopping. We loved everything about this home and would recommend to any and everyone thinking about taking a weekend trip. Thank you, Lindsay and Nathan!

  • This was my first experience with an Airbnb and it was perfect! Chuck and Cindy were excellent hosts. Location is very close to dining, great views of the countryside and plenty of activities for my children to stay occupied. The amenities were top notch! Our hosts have set the standard for my future Airbnb expectations, wherever that may be. Highly recommended!

    Joshua2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Conveniently located to the local college, Chuck's place is relaxing, peaceful and quiet. It's spacious, has plenty of room to work and play if you so choose. There's ample room if you're traveling solo or in a group. My assistant and I found it clean, convenient, and Chuck was a very nice, helpful host during our entire stay. We got a lot of work done and it was a good place for downtime and sleep.

  • This was a great booking choice right from the start. Chuck responded to our questions quickly and checked in with us the day before our stay. Their stay felt like home. It was obvious they took the time for thoughtful touches specific to our needs. The location is wonderful for a quiet get away and is an easy 20 minute drive to Harrisonburg. We spent a day in Staunton, which is a cute town I'd highly recommend. Would highly recommend!!!

  • What a wonderful experience staying at Caprica! Chuck & his wife are wonderful hosts and even sent us off with goodie bags. The space is large and clean and the snacks were a nice touch. The location is also very nice, Bluestone winery is just up the road and the view is quite pretty. We would come back and stay again any time we are visiting the area.

  • The Williams are some of the most hospitable and genuine people in the industry. Their space is expansive, has great views, and is very clean. We enjoyed the comfortable recliners, our kids loved the ping pong table, and it was great having the workout space. Chuck and Cindy will go out of their way to make your stay memorable. We'll be back!

  • We absolutely loved Mary's place. She took the best care of us in every way! :) We'll be back!!! She upgraded us to the apartment at no extra charge when she learned that we wanted a full kitchen, AND she is so flexible with check-out times that we could stay into the evening if no one was coming after us in the unit. The hot tub in the common area is absolutely wonderful. In so many ways, Mary made our anniversary celebration better than we imagined.

  • Randy is a great host. Five stars for everything, from welcoming us to all the great amenities and small touches. Randy's home is sparkling clean and very comfortable. It's a great location a few minutes from Highway 81, very convenient for us since we was traveling through on a long drive. We could not ask for anything more. The neighbourhood is good and we felt secure leaving out vehicle parked on the street in front of Randy's house. The place is exactly or even better than advertised. We have a saying: "If one would do or ask for anything different with our stay at Randy's Green Room, we would ruin it!!!" :) Thank you Randy for the hospitality and for having us stay with you. Next time we are passing through definetly we will be staying again and we also recommend this place to everyone with out a doubt.

The AirBnB is nestled right next to the main house with a great view of the sunrise. There were many thoughtful touches throughout the suite including water and snacks. These were especially welcoming after a long day of travel/work. Lastly, it’s a short drive to shops and food which is key. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to everyone!

This apartment is conveniently located in close proximity to Harrisonburg and the surrounding communities. Hiking trails, vineyards, downtown Harrisonburg, are all less than 15 minutes away. There is a queen bed in the bedroom and a day bed with trundle in the living room that makes a king or two twins. The living room has a tv, blue ray and DVD player (with access to Netflix). Fall foliage views on the VA and WVA boarder are less than 30 minutes away!
I am surrounded by Mennonite farmlands on three sides. The beauty is breath taking and the ever changing landscape depending on the season, makes each trip unique.

  • This place is quite modest but hey so am I! It is clean and has the basics, plus is is 20 minutes from some of the best mountain biking in the country. It’s a simple straight shot 10 minutes to town as well, could not be easier. If you’re traveling with pups Harrisonburg has the sweetest local parks or for more epic hikes the George Washington National Forest is amazing also. My only tip would be to bring extra kitchen supplies if you’ll be doing a lot of cooking, such as a good knife, cast iron skillet and can opener.

    Nathalie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Had a nice rest stop for a night here on our long roadtrip. It's a quiet, clean spot in the farm country of Virginia. Lower level of a home with a couple other occupants. Kitchen was suitable and communication was easy.

Light, airy room with private entrance, off street parking and private bath. Individual thermostat. Small refrigerator. Very close to I81 (3 blocks), JMU (2 blocks), downtown Harrisonburg (1.5 miles), and Purcell Park (3 blocks). We are an active family living upstairs. Some noise transfer is inevitable. We are conscientious of our guests and follow a 10PM quiet time. After 8/1/19 we need to charge 7.0% tax on the rental fee, to meet tax requirements. This is due in CASH at check-in
    Private entrance, complete privacy.
Quiet, established neighborhood. Close to a very nice park with 3 miles of walking trails.

Ahhhh.........quiet, get away from the hussle and bussle of life. The sound of a mountain creek taking your stress away. Getting back to nature, the gentle sway of a breeze, a starry night, rain pitter patter on a tin roof or the sun shining bright and warm. A lovely get away, barely minutes from George Washington National Forest, and yet only 20 minutes to Harrisonburg and JMU.
The best of both worlds. A quiet little cottage in the country, next to a lovely little mountain river. Yet, modern luxuries are not lost. This little home offers truly high speed internet, a hot shower, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, and garbage disposal. It has a washer and dryer combo and a porch almost as big as the cottage it's self. Nestled right next to the mountains with hiking and biking trails and yet only 20 to 25 minutes to Harrisonburg and James Madison University. Harrisonburg offers a variety of restaurants and entertainment.
  • Helpful host, well-stocked with breakfast items, cute cottage!

  • we didn't actually get to stay with Jennifer because of some last minute issues, but she was extremely responsive while we were trying to get everything figured out.

    Michael2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at 7 Acres Inn! Everything was so thoughtful, it really felt like home. Jennifer was able to recommend some really good restaurants in Harrisonburg and her dogs were the sweetest. We have a very enjoyable vacation.

    Rebekah2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Quite cottage not too far from the bigger city of Harrisonburg for good food, or the George Washington State Park for an outside adventure. The host provided tips, and eager dogs looking for a scratch. This is a relaxing stay.

    Kyle2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer was an awesome host and the place was so cozy with added amenities. It was perfect for our stay and so cute. The dogs were awesome too and were so sweet! Loved it!

  • This cabin is amazing and has everything you could possibly need! The area is beyond beautiful and Jennifer is such a kind and helpful host. We’ll definitely be staying here again.

    Lindsey2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • The place is so cute, very secluded and surrounded by beautiful nature. Starry sky is right above. I wish the bed was bigger and the bedroom was warmer though. Great amenities and wholesome breakfast.

NEW MAY 2019 - We’ve converted an old milk parlor into a charming rural retreat – just for you! The cottage is situated on the edge of our 15 acre farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We're sure you will love everything about our cozy cottage, from the shiplap walls to the breathtaking sunrises.
Whether you are visiting for business or pleasure we've got you covered; our cottage is located just 10 minutes from Interstate 81, 20 minutes to James Madison University/downtown Harrisonburg, and 3 minutes to the nearest winery. The Milk Parlor at Cross Keys' bedroom features a king bed with Casper Mattress, a seating area (with sleeper sofa), dresser, and coffee bar. You can count on us to stock the bar with some coffee and snack bars, plus bottled waters in the mini-fridge. Our walls are decorated with local art and an "Alexa" enabled Sonos speaker allows you to play your favorite music or get the forecast, using just your voice. Furthermore, if you want to stay in and enjoy relaxing, we have a TV that is logged-in to stream Neflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO. There is so much more and we can't wait to share it with you! #stayinamilkparlor
If you appreciate wine, you are in luck, we are surrounded by wineries! The closest is Cross Keys Vineyard, which also has a restaurant. It is 1.5 miles away. For our beer loving guests you can drive into downtown Harrisonburg to experience multiple great breweries or drive 20 minutes north or south to visit Cave Hill Farms Brewery or Stable Craft Brewing. Check out the Shenandoah Spirits Trail (https://www.shenandoahspiritstrail.com/) for more details on nearby wineries, craft breweries, cideries, and distilleries. If you enjoy local food, downtown Harrisonburg is 20 minutes away and is full of amazing restaurants. We also recommend Valley Pike Market, which is in Weyers Cave about 12 min from the Milk Parlor. It has lots of local goodies, a deli, food trucks, ice cream bar, and coffee shop. If you're "outdoorsy" and like hiking, biking or fishing, there are miles of trails, scenic roads, and waterways out of our door step. The view from the cottage looks right at the Blue Ridge Mountains, home of Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. We actually own a local biking and running shop, so we can recommend many places to explore, plus we have plenty of storage space for your bikes and other equipment. If you want to relax around the farm we have our own nature trail for you to enjoy. It is about a .5 mile walk, where we have a few trail side benches and a hammock and some chairs down by the stream. Do you like blueberries? Hobbit Hill Blueberry Farm is a pick-your-own patch right around the corner. (Seasonal - OPEN NOW) Massanutten Four-Season Resort is 20 minutes from our farm. They have lots of fun activities - skiing, waterpark, biking, and much more. Like pizza? Vito's Pizza is just a few minutes down the road and it's delicious (they also deliver to the farm.) Have kids? There is a new trampoline park 15 minutes down the road. Bonus, there is an ice cream shop and community playground right beside it! Horse enthusiast? Our property was once a horse farm and we have a few stables available for you to use, plus you're welcome to ride around our farm. Another fun activity near by is visiting the Grand Caverns. They are about 12 minutes from our cottage and a must-do experience if you've never been in a cave! Like antiquing? There are many great shops in our area - we recommend trying the Factory Antique Mall in Verona or if you're lucky enough to be here when the Barn at Creekside Farm is open - you must go!
  • Such a charming little place. Very well kept, super clean, and lovely little amenities. The farm is so peaceful, the children are precious and friendly, and the place is just so homey. We loved spending time with the hosts, you feel like part of the family! You will not be disappointed with your stay at the milk parlor. We will surely be back!

  • Clean, beautifully styled, cozy, and an extremely comfortable bed!

    Sara2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • This home was one of the best Air BnBs we've stayed at thus far. Kyle and Melissa were unbelievably nice and welcoming. Their home was kept immaculate with amazing mountain views! The milk parlor was inviting, vibrant, and we loved the small details and home decor they chose. It felt like a home away from home. We would highly recommend the milk parlor to anyone. We promise you will enjoy your time just as much as we did!

  • Love this little AirB&B. The room as so nice and clean, definitely nicer than a hotel. The hosts gave great advice and suggestions & always timely on responses. It house was a perfect central point to our location. Only one suggestion is to add a microwave!

    Whitney2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fantastic! I was in town for a work conference at JMU and this spot was perfectly located and easy to get to. Kirsten and Chris provided super helpful information for check-in and were very accommodating to my late arrival. The space itself looks like it’s out of a catalog—so beautiful and so welcoming. The bed was comfy and the couch was perfect for unwinding at the end of the day. The coffee maker and toiletries were both welcome surprises (especially since I forgot a few things at home), and I even got to meet their sweet dog. All in all, this was one of my favorite Air B&B stays, and I will definitely book mark Kirsten and Chris’s place for future stays in the area.

    Joan2020-03-06T00:00:00Z

  • Melodie's place is the perfect little suite to stay! It was well designed, sparkling clean, and offered all the amenities needed. Specifically a fully stocked kitchen, a record player, a TV with attached streaming services available, and multiple places to sleep. The best part of the stay was the personal touch that Melodie added in greeting us at the door and stocking the fridge with complimentary beverages and snacks. Those small gestures really made the place pop!

  • Spent a few lovely days at Marcia‘s cabin! Communication with Marcia has been very easy and checking in a breeze. The cabin is just as described. It is set in a somewhat secluded area, very peaceful. It was great being able to walk out directly from the cabin for a short hike to the blue hole on the first evening. We enjoyed some great hikes in the area over the next days and it was nice to come home to a warm and comfy cabin in the evening. The cabin has all amenities one can wish for and everything has been very well thought through. The upstairs area with the desk overlooking nature outside and the cute little nook for kids are great features. Enjoyed the gas fireplace downstairs in the evenings. We had plenty of hot water for our showers and great coffee with the Keurig in the mornings. Had twice diner in town at Jimmy’s Madison where we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. A wonderful stay we will remember. Highly recommended!

  • Was very nice for a quiet weekend away on Valentine’s Day. It is very desolate (as described) and almost impossible to get uber/taxi etc out there just to note. Harrisonburg is very close. Host left great suggestions for food and things to do. Thanks Marcia!

    Elizabeth2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place! In the woods away from a lot of people but close enough to town to make a relatively quick run to the store if needed. Definitely a big bang for your buck! This place did not disappoint and we will definitely be back again soon!

    Elizabeth2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • The place was easy to get to, felt secluded while still being close to everything you would need, cozy and clean. Communication with the host, Marcia, was easy and fast. Everything went smoothly. This place is great for a weekend away from the city to stargaze and listen to the river.

  • Cannot recommend this place enough! Everything about this stay exceeded our expectations. It’s a perfect getaway to relax and unwind. Ray and Rosemary have outdone themselves with this cabin. It’s really like stepping back in time (but with running water and heat and some modern touches). Loved waking up with the rooster! PLUS - the breakfast is THE BEST. Trust us and get the sausage gravy and biscuits and do not skip the cinnamon apples. This seriously was one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had. We’ll be back for sure!

Stream-side guest house with fantastic water view in lovely forest setting and steps away from trailhead to GW National Forest. Peaceful and private, this large 720 sq ft loft studio is a charming, comfy and secluded getaway. During the day go hiking or just relax on the deck overlooking the stream. At night open the windows and let soothing nature sounds lull you to sleep. Just 11 miles from Harrisonburg. Internet, Netflix. A meditative retreat and home base from which to explore the area.
CORONA VIRUS NOTE: Our loft is in a secluded natural location where one can, if desired, have little to no human contact. Our location greatly reduces the potential risk of community contagion of the Corona virus and enables one to easily practice social distancing. In an extra effort to provide the maximum protection to our guests, we ask that you bring your own set of queen-size bedsheets, blanket and your own towels. Not having to do laundry will give our housekeeper extra time to wipe down and sterilize all surfaces and to exercise every precaution to prevent exposure to the Corona virus. We appreciate your understanding of our efforts to protect you and our guests by providing a sanitized, sterile and safe living space. This secluded, second story loft/guesthouse (garage below) is accessed by a flight of stairs leading to a small deck overlooking the forest and beautiful stream. In the warm weather you can open the windows and hear the water rushing over the boulders. At the base of the stairs is another deck with a gas grill and a stair down to the lower property and the stream. The location is quite secluded and there is no traffic noise from rt. 33 which is almost a mile away. The loft is equipped with 2 burner hotplate, countertop oven, sink, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and necessaries for making and serving basic meals. Breakfast staples (eggs, bread, cereal, coffee, fruit, etc) included. High speed internet connected. Network channels, Netflix and Amazon on smart TV. Bathroom with stall shower. Smoke-free both inside the loft and on the grounds. Sorry, no pets of any kind. The space is set up to sleep two: See our other listing "Stream-side suite with private entrance/deck/bath" if traveling with friends and needing additional space). Check-in time is 2:00pm and Check-out time is 12:00 noon. IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to print driving and parking directions as some navigation systems have the last bit of our road mapped incorrectly! In the 1800's there was a destination resort hotel in Rawley Springs that was renowned for the "healing waters" emerging from the many springs in the area. At the foot of the Allegheny range, and located on the very border of hundreds of thousands of acres of GW National Forest, the loft feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. The grounds are planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and day lilies that are spectacular in the spring. Summer is five to ten degrees cooler than Harrisonburg due to the higher elevation, the tree canopy and stream. Great for hiking. Fall foliage is magnificent and is a week ahead of lower elevations in the Shenandoah Valley. Winter is a magical time when the trees are snow covered and the air crisp and clear. Just past the property is the trailhead for the National forest, so the loft is surrounded by forest and park land. From the trailhead one could walk for 20 miles into West Virginia and not see another structure (you may have to get your feet wet crossing if the stream is up - bring your hiking boots).
ENJOYING RAWLEY SPRINGS The property: Feel free to wander around the property or hang out in the garden and have a picnic on the grass. In the spring everything is blooming and green, and in the fall all the ground plants are turning brown as the leaves come into full color. The Stream: The stream flows directly out of George Washington National forest. To access the stream there is a stairway leading from the deck just behind the loft to the water. The stream might be a trickling brook if it’s been dry, or a raging river if there has been a big storm. Most often it is somewhere in between, but be careful – the rocks are always slippery. It’s fun to hang out on the big flat rocks in the middle of the stream directly across from the deck of the loft and have a picnic. If the steam is high enough you may wish to wade or lounge in the pools by the large rocks across from the loft. If you are a fly-fisher, the stream is home to native brook trout. The path that runs along the stream climbs back up the bank and forms an elliptical walking circuit back along the flat section – great for a walking meditation circuit. There are chairs and a bench scattered about for those who just wish to relax in the healing embrace of nature. Hiking in GW National Forest: If you face the gravel road and go right, you will quickly come to the end of the road and the beginning of GW National forest. Go straight past the end of the cul-de-sac and you are at the trail head. There is a beautiful little wading pool just steps down from the road, and miles and miles of trails begin just across from the stream. If the stream is up, you might have to get your feet wet if the stepping stones across are covered with water. There are three stream crossings on this trail within the first quarter mile or so, after which it follows the right bank for miles as you gain elevation. (At the second stream crossing you can follow the right bank over the bluff to avoid the second and third stream crossings). Just over the first stream crossing and to the left is a beautiful little picnic spot on the rocks across from a steep rock wall. A really great hang-out spot. (If the stream is too high, or you don’t want to get your feet wet, see the description for “Juliette’s Tower” to access the more difficult but equally beautiful trail that is on the opposite bank of the stream, and which requires some climbing, but no stream crossings). The trail into the forest is occasionally marked on the trees by two yellow squares or diamonds, and pretty much follows the stream. You can’t get lost if you remember that the stream flows towards home – it will bring you back to the cul-de-sac. The trail presents some really lovely and intimate views. After the third stream crossing the trail is a bit rocky for a hundred yards or so, then evens out. After this rocky bit, the path diverges from the stream for a stretch - look for a small cairn of stones and one oblong stone on the left side of the trail pointing toward the stream. The oblong stone points to a large, flat boulder just above a lovely pool into which rush a few small rapids. Gorgeous, secluded and peaceful. Sit on the boulder over the pool and become a fully realized being. Further on the trail is a beautiful long view of the stream, and also a section with a beautiful tall rock face on the other side. It’s easy to lose your sense of time as you delight in all this beauty: Remember to be back before dark! Of course, animals live in this huge forest, including black bears, and it’s conceivable, though very rare, that you might see one– as well as other forest creatures. They want to avoid you and it’s very unlikely that you will end up in the belly of a wild animal - we have never heard of anyone being attacked by a bear around here. More Hiking - Juliet’s Tower and the Left Bank: Also at the end of the cul-de-sac, to your left, will be a path that goes up the side of the very steep hill (use the tree roots as steps). Climb past the first large granite boulders and outcroppings, and about 200’ above the road you can hunt around to find the path that runs to your right. This path leads to a long, tall, granite wall (not just a bunch of boulders) and on to “Juliet’s Tower” (see photo). The wall is, perhaps, 100 feet long and 20 feet high and the path runs along its base, so if you don’t know if you’ve found it, you haven’t. There are great hang-out/picnic spots up here. You have to be a good rock climber to get up on the tower itself, which is a granite outcropping/spire about 20’ high, but the path along the rock wall is pretty cool too with a nice view. Well worth the effort. The Left Bank: If you are following this path because the stream is too high to cross and want to hike in the mountains along the left bank of the stream, continue on the narrow footpath past Juliette’s tower and down the side of the hill. This path is seldom traveled and a bit overgrown, but manageable. At the base of the hill you will cross over a little tributary brook (about 4 feet wide) and continue on the path as it opens up and becomes wider. In a few hundred yards you will come to a campfire pit and the path leads to a stream crossing. However, look to the left from the firepit and you will see a path that follows the left bank of the stream. Follow the left bank trail, picking your way through a pathless area of boulders (across from which is the meditation rock and pool mentioned in the “yellow rectangles” trail on the other side of the stream) until you come to a new stream/tributary that comes in from the left (and is about 20’ across). Follow the left bank of that stream until you come to another firepit, across from which is a really magical spot with small waterfalls and rapids with a little island in the middle. This is the best spot on this stream. A perfect place to have lunch and lounge by, or in, in the water. Further along this trail dead-ends on the left side and requires a stream crossing to continue on the right bank, where it gets rougher. Lower Rawley: If you prefer strolling to hiking take a walk through the pleasant village of Lower Rawley, population 20, more or less. If you face the gravel road and turn left you will walk out the way you drove in. It’s a nice walk into the little neighborhood of “Lower Rawley” (see drawing). (By the way - You will pass a bridge over the stream with a sign for “Highlands of Rawley Springs” that is just down from the loft. You can go to the middle of the bridge to get a view, but please don’t go all the way over the bridge and up into that neighborhood - a troll lives under that bridge and there are “residents and guests” only postings. Even though you are our guests, you don’t want to explain and it’s not worth the hassle anyway to walk up that big hill). Further on down the road, there is a hard-to-see path that is on the left side of the road, just past and above the first big newer house on the left, that leads down into Lower Rawley. Go down that path into Lower Rawley. If you miss it, no worries, just keep going on the road past the mailboxes and little stone spring house and down the hill. Take a hairpin left on Gum Run Trail which brings you into Lower Rawley from the other end. In the 1920’s locals began building cabins in Lower Rawley and you are our guest and therefore free to walk around the troll-free neighborhood and enjoy this pretty area. Gum Run Trail dead-ends at the aforementioned newer house, and the path you missed is now on your left and runs along the fenced-in yard with the chicken coop and big black dog that barks a lot but is harmless. There may be goats in that yard as well. You can pet them. Follow the path up to the paved road and turn right to get back to the loft. In the 1800’s Rawley Springs was a retreat renowned for its “healing waters” (see photos). Fires twice destroyed the main hotels that were built – as you walk around you can still see the stone foundations of the hotels above the mailboxes next the small stone springhouse. Blue Hole: Blue Hole is a well-known swimming hole on the confusingly named Dry River. You passed over the Dry River just after you turned onto Rawley Springs Road from Rt. 33. There is a path that runs along the near side of the river, and which goes to your left as you face the river, leading to Blue Hole. If you go down Gum Run Trail from Rawley Springs Rd and turn right over the little bridge that crosses the stream, then turn right again along the dirt road you will see some cabins (and a Swiss Chalet style house) on your right, and a little father along a small stone and wood cottage. Go between the cabins and stone cottage to find that path (turn left on the path) that closely boarders the river to get to Blue Hole. It is a nice walk even if you don’t intend to swim. You will know you are there when you see some signs of “Do not do xyz” posted by the county, and look across the water and see a giant boulder overhanging Blue Hole, from which we encourage you not to jump. The Upper Westward Path. Further up the hill from Juliet’s Tower, there is a trail that leads West into the forest that may be of interest to the serious woodsman. You can continue straight up the steep slope through the woods (no path and a difficult and brush impeded climb) and in about 100 yards you will strike a trail that runs perpendicularly to the hillside. Turn right and you can hike West for miles. You should mark your entry point to the path with something so that when you return you know when to go back down the hill to the Cul-de-Sac. People get lost up here. However, if you turn left when you strike the path it will take you back to gravel roads in Upper Rawley (Cliffside Trail), so if you miss your mark on the return hike, you can always come back around the long way just by continuing on the path. We don’t recommend this trail except to those who are equipped with a topo map and maybe a gps. It’s not particularly scenic when compared to the stream-side trails, as it is uninterrupted forest.
  • Truly a beautiful property and comfortable one-room accommodation.

  • Our stay here was beyond what we expected In regards to the area, accommodations, and especially the fact that our space made us feel like we were in a tree house. ☺️ for someone who lives in the city full time now but had once lived in the country out west, it’s very refreshing to find places such as this. It was a beautiful experience for several reasons traveling the paths within the property and park. The stay was stylish, modern, relevant and uplifting. Thank you!

  • The view from this home is absolutely spectacular. You can crack the window and hear the rushing of the stream as you go to sleep. I sat down by the stream for about an hour just to relax I can only imagine how beautiful this place would be in the summertime also. The loft was clean, open, and had a ton of little touches. The Host even had eggs in the refrigerator for breakfast and oatmeal for free. It was an amazing stay I would highly recommend to anybody!
