Fern Creek is a small family farm nestled in the forested hills of Yamhill County's wine country. Guests enter a captivating peace-filled space with forests and gardens where all kinds of life flourishes.
In response to COVID, we've enhanced cleaning protocols, are spacing guests, and allowing longer stays. Additionally, due to Oregon Travel Restrictions in effect, we're only able to host local (Oregon) guests for non-essential travel just now. I'll update here every 2 weeks.

The space
Fern Creek offers your body and soul the opportunity for rest and/or rejuvenation. Take a walk in the woods or on the country roads that wind around the hills in our neighborhood. We are a zero energy solar powered farm on five acres, which includes a forest of evergreen, maple, and oak, nearly two acres of attractively designed orchards, berry fields, vegetable gardens, a charming (I know, really?) hen house, and an even more charming goat yard and barn, home to Clara, Sophie, and Zeke, our three adorable Nigerian Dwarf goats, on top of which sits a little retreat cabin.

Guests stay in a 1250 square-foot apartment with 9-foot ceilings and good natural light. The kitchen and bath cabinets come from reclaimed lumber off a barn in Gaston. French doors off the master bedroom (king bed) lead to a private patio. A second bedroom holds a queen bed and is the quieter and darker of the two rooms. The open design kitchen, dining room, and living room make you feel like you’ve entered a place with room to breathe. Stay three nights or seven and rest in the beauty and quiet of this small working farm.

Your choice of homemade cookies (Mark makes famously popular Ranger Cookies) or a Theo Fair Trade Organic Chocolate bar will be on the table when you arrive along with a complimentary bottle of Stoller wine. The apartment includes a private courtyard with a hot tub, flat-screen TV, wireless Internet, ironing and bath amenities. Organic, fair trade coffee and tea, organic oats, sugar and dried fruit are stocked in the fully equipped kitchen, along with our own organically grown popcorn and an old fashion stove-top popper. Fresh fresh fruit and vegetables and eggs from Fern Creek can be purchased as seasonally available, along with a variety of small batch preserved items, our own Sageworks Soapery goat milk soaps, fair trade organic chocolate (made in the NW) and other snacks. We grow our food sustainably, and solar panels supply all of our energy needs. Our goal is to live as gently as we can and to that end cleaning supplies and bath amenities are Earth-friendly. The small bars of soap in the bathroom are Sageworks Soapery bars, and you are free to take them with you when you leave.

Our enhanced cleaning routine involves following our regular cleaning with disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (e.g. light switches, door knobs, stove and cabinet knobs, faucets), rotating and airing out sofa and bed pillows for a minimum of 3 days, and spacing guests so there is a minimum of 36 hours airing time in between. These will be in effect until further notice. We have increased our cleaning fee by $20 to reflect our enhanced cleaning, and now require a two day minimum stay for reservations.

Guest access
The apartment is the lower level of our home and includes the adjacent courtyard and hot tub. Guests are welcome and encouraged to walk through the forest, check out the orchard and gardens, and sit in the gazebo down by the creek. We do ask that you stay out of the chicken house and, until COVID is better understood, visit the goats from your side of the fence and refrain from exploring their barn or the Prayer Cabin above it. Mark and I live in a separate space upstairs, so you’ll hear us patter around when we’re home, and some evenings the smell of our homegrown popcorn may waft downstairs.

Other things to note
For an extra touch pre-order (via email) a Welcome Basket, a Fern Creek Farm Breakfast Basket or a Fern Creek Picnic basket. The Simply Unwind Basket includes a bottle of local Pinot Noir, Rose Pinot, or Chardonnay (your choice) and assorted fair trade organic chocolate ($40); or choose All Things Local, which includes the above plus roasted hazelnuts, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and a jar of Fern Creek's jam ($60--seasonal availability). The Breakfast Basket (as available) includes 1/2 dozen Fern Creek eggs, Fern Creek homemade pancake mix (add milk and eggs), a bottle of Fern Creek Blackberry Syrup, Fern Creek veggies and/or fruit ($30). Picnic Basket includes NW products: cheeses, hummus, crackers or bread, roasted hazelnuts, Deviled eggs from Fern Creek, veggy sticks and fruit (also from Fern Creek when available), and homemade cookies ($55).

You can pay for these with Venmo or Paypal or cash when you place the order or after arriving.

Between now and the end of August we're also offering to secure groceries for you and have them here when you arrive. Contact me if you are interested in more information about that service.

Location

Newberg, Oregon, United States

Fern Creek is less than an hour from Portland and just over an hour from the Oregon coast. We are 10 minutes outside of Newberg, home to George Fox University (where we both have faculty appointments), and within 5-15 minutes of a number of very fine wineries and restaurants. Our immediate neighborhood is pastoral. A walk up Williamson or Dudley Road takes you by vineyards, horses, sheep, and cows. If walks are your thing (they are ours) we've put together a description of 5 jaunts you can take in the neighborhood, ranging from 1 to 10 miles. Our hope is that a stay at Fern Creek takes you away from the noise of your regular life and steeps you in sounds, smells, and sights of an older, more natural world.

A good day: being outside anywhere doing anything. Mostly that means working on our small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, but it includes hiking, walking up the hill past the sheep and horses, and reading/napping in the hammock. Baking, cooking, and preserving food are favorite things I do inside--and being with friends and family. On my bookshelves: Tolkein, Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver, Maria Semple, Ingrid Unsted, Michael Pollan, Patrick Rothfus (to name a few). In my pantry (from our fields): assortment of dried beans, red onion marmalade, zucchini relish, Dilly beans, peaches, salsa, strawberry syrup, hot mustard relish (to name a few). I try to pay attention to bees and butterflies, the budding of trees, the creek's annual journey, the emergence of daffodils, bird, hen, and squirrel play--and to respond to life with gratitude, hoping to help life flourish by loving and tending the places of the world I touch. I hope to greet you when you arrive, but if I'm harvesting vegetables or otherwise out and about I'll catch up with you later. I'm glad to show you around Fern Creek or let you explore the five acres on your own. Mostly we hope the peace and beauty of this place feeds and nurtures your soul as it does ours. We've created a space for guests with that hope in mind.

During your stay
We assume people choose Fern Creek partly because they are seeking the kind of quiet found in hiking, walking, reading, sitting, and wine tasting. It offers a respite from the city and is a good place to work or take a staycation. We will stay out of your way (!) but I’m available by text to answer questions during your stay.
