REFUGIO NACIONAL DE VIDA SILVESTRE ROMELIA
The Romelia RMVS, located in Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula, was created on November 24th, 1998 with the objective of contributing to the conservation of the Tempisque Conservation Area (ACT, from its acronym in Spanish).
The refuge stemmed from an initiative of Albert Ingalls and Gitza Gatti, who followed a dream of conservation for land that was their home and the birthright of their children. The land, now the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge (RMVS-Romelia), contributes to the ACT as part of the peninsular biological corridor (Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve, Curu Mixed Wildlife Reserve, Karen Morgensen Reserve, Nicholas Wessberg Reserve and the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge). It is adjacent to the Nicholas Wessberg Absolute Reserve, one of the first and most valuable protected wild areas in the country.
The land of the RMSV exudes beauty. It is beachfront, bathed by rollinf Pacific Ocean waves, guarded by iconic sea stacks and inlands nurtured by peaceful rivers and tranquil waterfalls. It is one of the peninsula’s last bastions of pristine wilderness. The RMVS is visited by tens of thousands of eco tourists annually.
This Refuge is approximately 224 Ha 8349 m2 (SINAC, 2011). Within this territory there are a number of distinct ecosystems, primary forest, secondary forest, riparian forest and gallery forest. The avifauna includes more than 57 species of birds, 26 species of herpetofauna including, 13 reptiles and 7 amphibians. There are also 26 species of mammals, including 11 types of bats.
The weather is characterized as humid, hot and very hot. Annual precipitation is about 3,000 mm, distributed from May to December. Precipitation presents deficit between July and August during the period known as “Veranillo de San Juan”, which lasts up to 70 days. Average annual temperature is between 24 and 27 C (75,2 to 80,6 F) with an annual potential evapotranspiration of over 1710 mm. The aridity index is over 20% and the hydric is between 40 and 60% (Herrera 1985 quoted in RMVS-Romelia—SINAC-MIAET, 2011).

Ex situ and in situ Management and Conservation of Sea Turtle nesting grounds (Lepidochelys olivaceae) at the Romelia R.M.V.S (Cocal Beach and Cocalito Beach), Montezuma, Cóbano.
Our mission is to rally support for long-term, sustainable strategies aimed at the restoration and preservation of precious wildlife and land. Utilizing prime ocean front that has been generously donated to our program for stewardship, we have a singular opportunity to offer the environment a new beginning, sea turtles a fighting chance and our visitors a window into the natural world for generations to come.
Please try to be aware of using environmental friendly practices: MAKE SURE TO TURN LIGHTS OFF, SAVE WATER (we have outages in summer)
No more than 5 people allowed in the house.
Be respectful of your neighbor parking space and keep it quiet after 11 p.m.
We spent two nights there and actually loved it. So close to the water and nature. Very nice patio, some mosquitos, but in general very enjoyable.
La Casa Palmeras has an incredible location within walking distance to the town of Montezuma, dining, Montezuma Falls, local swimming holes and beautiful beaches. It is also a short ways away from Cabuya, Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve and Santa Teresa. You can hear the waves from the beach at night and tropical birds waking you up in the morning.
I traveled with 2 other female friends and we felt very safe in the town as well as the house itself. The locals are very friendly and helpful.
If you do not speak Spanish, I highly advise that you have a dictionary or translator app. Our friend is a native Spanish speaker and we would not have found out the majority of the information regarding the house and the area if she had not been with us.
That being said, we never met our host. We were told that Fabio was the main contact yet we did not have phone access, only WIFI. We stayed in contact with Ntt by the airbnb chat and she was very responsive each time we had an issue. We only met Fabio once when we locked the keys in the house (the door locks automatically when shut FYI). Throughout our 9 day stay, we met a total of 4 people who worked for the host: Fabio, a young man who let us in, an older gentleman who seemed to be a gardener and informed my friend in Spanish after 2 days of no water pressure that the water was turned off at the street, and an amazing and wonderful woman (also only Spanish speaking) who cleaned the house and helped us with laundry because we couldn't seem to get it to work.
There were quite a few hiccups including no toilet paper, water turned off and most importantly, we were not informed of so many employees working for the host. In the informative email only Fabio was mentioned. As 3 females traveling alone through a foreign country it was a bit nerve racking at times.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Montezuma. We got some much needed R&R and found ourselves thoroughly immersed in the Costa Rican culture.
I must mention the Soda Tipica next door to the house is absolutely AMAZING. We ate there several times a day. It is run by a warm, welcoming and sweet family. The cook puts her heart and soul into everything she makes. She was a Godsend. Eat here to get a fair price on food and experience REAL Costa Rican fare. Also say hello to their dogs Coca-Cola and Linda for us!
Ntt was very responsive to us prior to and during our stay. We arrived in Montezuma on our first night and were told that due to a mix up the house was not ready. Within an hour we were taken to a nearby house, described as an upgrade, however, it only had one bedroom and was very noisy as it is in the center of town. We were able to move into Casa Palmeras on our second night. The views were beautiful and it is within walking of the beach and town. A few things to note: Montezuma gets very hot, we thought we would be ok without air conditioning being that it was March, however it was 95 degrees and humid for most of our stay. The house has only basic essentials and we were surprised at how high the prices at the grocery and restaurants in town were. If you plan to drive there a 4x4 is a definitely a must for
navigating the roads- we even had to cross a few rivers on our drive into Montezuma! We also found the town of Montezuma to have a strange vibe and was not exactly what we were expecting. We ended up leaving a night early to explore other areas of Costa Rica and escape the heat. Overall, it was worth it for the price and proximity, but had some ups and downs.
Great location, easy to get to Montezuma, fantastic beach right out front. Comfortable house.
Friendly Soda next door and also the staff all very helpful.
Could have done with a proper washing line to hang clothes.
We had a good time and we enjoyed every single day at Casa Palmeras. The kids love having the monkeys coming to say hello nearly every day.
The house is beautiful and conveniently located right across the street from our favorite beach in Montezuma. 10-15 min walk into the center of town, just close enough to be easily reached on foot.
The only problem we had was with the lack of AC during the day. At night it was no problem, but our stay was during the hottest season, and the house traps heat. NTt was very attentive and easy to get in touch with and helped us move next door into the deluxe version of the home, which is AMAZING. While I probably wouldn't stay here again, I would most definitely spend the extra money to rent the Deluxe Casa Palmeras again. My only regret is that we aren't here for longer!
