Makena's Place was lovely. Both mom and daughter Makena were a delight. Chichi, soon to be famous for her part in an upcoming Netflix production was most welcoming, helpful to the extreme, trying to think what would most assist our time here in Kenya and Karen in particular, with travel advise, taxi service and other help and tips. Well traveled herself, Chichi is quite savvy and charming. The house and grounds are beautiful. The breakfast is custom made by the easily cracked, delightful housekeeper. I wish the nights were colder during our stay so we could have put the fireplace to good use but hey...
The guest end of the house is private and the patio/lanai very pleasant but you may prefer the kitchen for your breakfast to mingle with your hosts.
Everywhere I have traveled in Kenya, the operation of the shower is a learning experience, we got in late for explanations but before showering you may want to get a quick tutorial unless you are familiar with these things.
The ONLY area for improvement: the completion of the road, which looks eminent, making the walk to Karen center a little easier.
Otherwise, no complaints. You may not want to leave.
Just as the photos and reviews promised, Makena's Place was a beautiful, tranquil space for my family to spend a few days resting and welcoming the new year. I've lived in Nairobi before and have also travelled back and forth and I can say with confidence that this is one of the best places I have ever stayed in Nairobi, just enough removed from the city centre to enjoy the woods and greenery of Karen but close enough to get anywhere I needed during the day. My mom loved reading in the backyard patio and garden and my dad loved jumping on the large trampoline. Chichi was a wonderful host as well, very flexible and hospitable even when we had some last minute date changes. She always made time to make sure we were comfortable even though we came somewhat inconveniently at the end of the year/New Year holiday period. Her housekeeper, Catherine, was also very kind, cooking us lovely breakfasts and showing us around, and she has a wicked sense of humour. All in all, we loved staying here and one of us already has another booking in place in a few weeks. It's one of those places you want to keep a secret :)
Every thing about my short stay with Chichi Seii at Makena's Place was excellent and better that I expected. My only regret is that My Stay was limited this time to Just One Night and Just for Myself.
The Location was perfect and very close to Karen Shopping Centre as well as the Dance Academy where I had to be near My Grandaughter who was dancing in the Nutcracker there.
Chichi is an excellent Host and Catherine Chichi's House Person was also very helpful.
My Stay delightful, excellent Breakfast and first class coffee, Both Chichi and Catherine pay great attention to important details such as privacy, and security, tidiness and decor.
Next time , and there will be a next time we will stay longer and I will book also for My wife Judy who will love it.
Chichi knows the current Kenya scene well and also went to University and Lived and worked in Sydney Australia - for Her Kenya is Mom and Australia is a favorite Auntie.
Wonderful experience in Every Way 5 Stars out of 5!
Thanks so very very Much and Blessings for 2015.
We had a wonderful time at Makena`s. It is a beautiful and warm place with great people who made us feel right at home. The place is clean, quiet and very serene but above all the best impression was the people living there and off course the cuddly and excitable little Lulu (the family outdoor dog). Make sure to enjoy a walk in her beautiful garden and a relaxed breakfast on her patio. We enjoyed the great variety on the breakfast menu too. I would highly recommend a stay at Makena`s place and hopefully we will get an opportunity to stay here again in the near future.
We arrived very late in the evening, to be met by Chichi (our hostess) who had waiting up for us. Makena's Place is by far one of the prettiest places we have stayed, safe, secure and will, without question, return and stay again.
The accommodation provides a relaxed atmosphere, the bed comfortable and lovely to sleep in. Breakfast preparation is planned and changes on a daily basis, indicating that Chichi treats her guests like part of her family.
Chichi’s cottage is spotless clean in a super central, leafy Karen location (3min walk to Talisman restaurant (FAB food!); 10min walk to Karen shopping centre). We stayed in the Flamingo Room with ensuite bathroom which is lovely: nice linen/towels, a little dated/but functioning bathroom; views in the beautiful garden/out on the terrace.
The lovely owner and well traveled actress Chichi lives there with her sweet 7 year old daughter, their very helpful live-in housekeeper Kathryn (who also speaks fluent English and is super kind); the gardener and security guard.
Communication with Chichi was very efficient: she was incredibly helpful with everything (I asked for Avocados/limes before arrival); we were served beautiful fresh ginger tea, fruits/pancakes, breads/sausages for breakfast and I could prepare my own vegetables.
The kitchen is very new with all modern appliances..wifi is very good.
If you need a fab lunch spot (lots of healthy salad etc options) and great wifi, try the Arts Caffee in Karen.
Bear in mind that it takes a min of 45min but more like 1.5hrs in normal ‘jam’ traffic to get to downtown Nairobi..
We were the only guests staying at this time, so it didn’t feel ‘crowded’ at breakfast. We hardly saw Chichi/her daughter as we left early, and they were busy going about their lives.
Given torrential rains/storms for 2days, we had a power cut which meant no warm water/electricity for one night/morning in Karen, no major problem for us but something to bear in mind. Kathryn even offered to boil a bucket of water for ‘bathing’ purposes on that day.
Recommended, we will be back – and good value in expensive Nairobi. Thank you, Chichi!

About the Host, Chichi
I am a performing artiste and a TV set designer. I am a mother of a 5 year old girl. I am a Christian and I love life.
My favourite travel destination Diani Beach (Kenyan coast)... I have lived in Sydney and I loved it, I love Paris too!
I am a gracious host and I enjoy meeting new people. I am however not overly chatty, so I will give you your space; as I enjoy mine. Unfortunately, if I am on a tv shoot I tend to work very long hours and so you will hardly see me. I do however have my house maid who lives with me and she will be the one to welcome you, make sure you are comfortable and make your breakfasts.
I like to read, I am not big on tv, we do not even have one in the house. I love music, long walks, gardens and nature and a good glass of wine :-)
I believe, life is what you make it. It is a choice.
