Less than two hours from San Francisco on the Russian River (but a world away!) -- near vineyards, redwoods, and the Sonoma coast. This cottage sits on a quarter acre of sunny riverfront property in a quiet neighborhood just west of Monte Rio.

The Space

The house offers two comfortable bedrooms. The smaller one has a double bed, bamboo floors, French doors that open directly onto the deck, and gorgeous views of the sunrise over the river and redwood hills. The larger has a queen bed and carpeted floors.

The kitchen is equipped with a gas range, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and all essential implements (down to the candy thermometer!). Cook up a storm with fantastic local ingredients -- I can offer recommendations on great places to pick up meat, produce, and seafood.

Just so you don't have to worry about it, I provide olive oil, salt, pepper, and a few other essentials. There's also an herb garden just outside the back door.

There is a large, sunny dining and sitting area just off the kitchen. The living room has a wood burning stove to keep things cozy on winter evenings.

The large back deck offers plenty of room for lounging in the sun and watching the river flow by. The hot tub is perched on the edge of the deck with great river views. It is wonderful for stargazing at night and birdwatching in the morning.

The house has flower gardens with seasonal roses, lilies, daffodils, fuchsia, irises, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and California poppies, to name a few.

I've only owned the house since the start of 2013 and have been doing lots of work to get it ready for guests. If you're looking for an impeccably posh experience, this might not be the place for you. But if you can handle a few (mostly charming) imperfections in a very functional and fun house, then it will be a great fit. I welcome any feedback you have on what I can do to polish this diamond in the rough, and hope you can come back to watch it evolve.

Enjoy your escape at the riverside retreat!

Guest Access

Guests have access to the full property: house, hot tub, sunny deck, gardens, and river access.

Interaction with Guests

I like to learn a little bit about my guests, so definitely introduce yourself. I'm always happy to answer any questions and do everything I can to ensure you have a fantastic stay.

I will not be at the property while you stay, but am accessible by phone and email if anything comes up. Other guests have provided excellent feedback on ways to make the house even better, and I welcome yours as well.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is unique for the area: quiet, sunny, and removed from the traffic of River Road. Its signature feature is the tall Lombardy poplars lining the streets. You'll notice a profusion of birds of all kinds at this intersection of the redwood hills, meadows, river, and ocean. Hummingbirds abound in the garden. There's an easy 30-minute stroll through the neighborhood to the community garden, old-growth redwood "ghost tree", and path down to Austin Creek at the end. It's possible to walk all the way to Duncan's Mills (about 2 miles) or on the back road to Cazadero.

Getting around

It's about a 10-minute walk to the bus stop, but in reality you'll probably need your own car to get around. It is all too easy to spend days at a time without going beyond the house, deck, and hot tub!

Other Things to Note

Please note that that weekend bookings require a three-night minimum, and holiday weekends have a minimum based on the length of the holiday (i.e. three-day weekends have a four-night minimum). Exceptions can be made for last-minute bookings.

The house has a fully stocked game shelf at your disposal: Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Cards Against Humanity, cribbage board, playing cards, Connect Four, and a jigsaw puzzle.

  • Adam was a fantastic host. I spent a weekend with my sister there and we had a great time. The check-in and check-out directions were clear and straightforward, and the house is a beautiful and peaceful oasis. Both of the beds were very comfortable, and the kitchen was a great place to cook up meals as it was stocked with a variety of cooking equipment. We enjoyed the hot tub and the view of the river on the sunny deck. The house is also really conveniently located in Monte Rio so it was super easy to visit the Monte Rio beach and the shops/Safeway in Guerneville. We hope to return one day soon to enjoy this lovely house by the river again.

  • This is a lovely, and very comfortable house. The pictures don't do it justice, its like a fairy tail. Beautiful backyard and great access to the river. We are a family of 4 with two boys, 12 and 15. We brought inner tubes and enjoyed floating around on an incredibly picturesque part of the river we had never seen before. This is a quiet neighborhood, and best suited for a laid back mellow retreat. It would also be great for 2 couples.

Adam was very responsive and easy to work with. His instructions were clear and provided contact information in case issues came up. We did call the hot tub maintenance person because the water was a little dirty on arrival - it didn't prevent us from using the tub but it was nice that it was serviced the next day. Its important to always rinse off before getting in the tub!

All in all a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back!

  • We really enjoyed our weekend getaway at this riverside retreat. We especially enjoyed basking in the sun on the large deck, soaking in the spacious hot tub, and launching our kayaks from the backyard! The house gets tons of light, and the kitchen and BBQ were great for preparing meals during our stay. Adam was easy to communicate with and his clear instructions made checkin and checkout a breeze.

  • This house on the river absolutely made our trip. There was clear communication from Adam, the house was easy to find and very clean and comfortable. The quaint landscaping, huge deck and hot tub made relaxing very easy. We cooked for every meal and did not want for any kitchen equipment. The dock needs to be rebuilt but it did not hinder us from playing in the river and fishing. I highly recommend this house for a weekend away! Thank you Adam!

  • My wife and I stayed here for a short weekend getaway and it was perfect. It's nice and quiet, and our favorite part was the hot tub. We really enjoyed waking up to the sounds of the river and the nature around it as well. We can't wait to come back!

  • Adam was a great host and his home is lovely. We especially loved stargazing from the hot tub and eating breakfast on the sunny deck. The house was as described: great gardens, good kitchen, stairs down to the river, and while it was clear the kitchen was being renovated, it was all in good shape. Adam responded quickly to messages.

  • Wow. This place truly is a beautiful, relaxing retreat. Off the beaten path yet close enough to everything - hike the Sonoma Coast, swim in the Russian river, wine tasting adventures... And that's assuming you will want to leave the house!

Adam was a gracious host. Very responsive and clear about everything house related. No surprises. And who doesn't like a bottle of wine waiting for your arrival?

I am still dreaming of hanging out on the back deck, gazing at the stars and listening to the froggy chorus.

Saying this gem is "peaceful" doesn't even do it justice.

Really hoping to get up there again soon.

  • Adam's home provided a perfect place for a much-needed respite from city life. My husband, toddler, and I spent two nights there and were very happy. The house is perfect for 2-6 people to stay comfortably. It's clean, comfy, well-stocked, and in a perfect location. The neighborhood is quiet and not over-populated. The back yard and patio are perfect for lounging, as is the hot tub. Adam even welcomed us with a bottle of wine, which was much appreciated.

He is currently doing some work in the kitchen, but it did not interfere with our being able to cook or eat at all.

We would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.

  • This is a great holiday destination. We stayed for 4 days, but could easily have enjoyed ourselves for 1 or 2 weeks. The view on the river from the large deck, and from the lower levels of the garden, is just amazing. Beautiful redwoods on the other side of the river. The garden was already partly in bloom - lovely and very peaceful. Plenty of space and comfort in the house, with one of the bedrooms and the front room - with fire place - nicely updated. Good beds, clean bathroom. Adam is working in the kitchen area, but no obstacle to enjoying the place.

We were contemplating going to Napa or somewhere near Las Rosas, but Monte Rio is actually a nicer area, we think. Not overly developed yet. Very near to the ocean and the nice restaurants of Bodega Bay (one with Michelin star, Terrapin Creek - check it out). Also close to the wineries of Russian River and Dry Creek Valley. We had a great time exploring the area during the day and sipping wine in the evening on the beautiful deck.

Adam was a very accommodating host. He left very clear instructions on dealing with the property, cleaning up, checking out, which I can appreciate as it is such a beautiful property. Highly recommended.
