"MAGICAL"

This really special and lovely home is under 90 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge (without traffic...). Fabulous, tasteful, well-maintained, and totally modern, the house is built into a hill in the redwood forest and overlooks the Russian River Valley. The thoroughly contemporary "cabin" is located near the little town of Monte Rio, CA (about 3 miles west of Guerneville). There is nothing better than sitting in that hot tub overlooking the pristine beauty of the gorgeous russian river valley. The place is great for a couple or a solo traveler who just wants to chill out in a really beautiful and special place.

About the place. The house is about 720 sq ft and thoroughly modern with an ingenious use of space. The "loft like" bedroom is atop a spiral staircase. From the bed are redwood trees framed by skylights. Linens are provided.

There is a large deck with a table for outside meals, and there is a wonderful hot tub. The hot tub will take several hours to warm up after you arrive and will get up to 104 - the manufacturer does not let the tub get hotter than 104. The hot tub is treated between guests and fully serviced on Wednesdays so if your visit includes a Wednesday the hot tub people might show up and we can let you know ahead of time at what time to expect them.

There are two couches outside as well. The speaker system for the excellent indoor/outdoor stereo system really enhances chilling out on the deck.

The place has a very modern kitchen with an electric stove. There is a gas grill on the deck, and we try to provide enough propane for the grill. You will find the usual implements of cooking destruction. Some guests bring and leave spices and oils and some things accumulate (mustard, oregano) and others go quick (olive oil). Just to be safe, if you love to cook you can bring what you know you need, or check what's been left first and just replace what you use.

You can walk down the hill to a lovely beach on the Russian River, and the walk takes about 10-15 minutes. If you are renting in the summer, there are some rafts and beach chairs you can bring down to the river with you. And if you are walker, you can walk about a mile to Monte Rio where there are a few restaurants, cafes, and bars (some only open in the Summer months). Guerneville, which has more restaurants and bars (including 2 gay bars) is about 3 miles away. In Guerneville and Monte Rio you can also rent canoes or kayaks for a day on the river. In the other direction, you drive along the river and in about 10 minutes come to Jenner and Goat Rock State Park, a spectacular park where river meets ocean. Bodega Bay is quite close as well. Charming Occidental, with great breakfast spots, is a short drive. You are also near the Northwood Golf Course, Armstrong Woods Park, and easily more than 50 world class wineries. Plus hiking all over the place in this overwhelming beauty.

We love this house and need to be sure any potential guests will care for the place as much as we do, so there is a security deposit. This gets refunded assuming there is no damage or violation of the rental agreement. We obtained a vacation rental permit and so pay a tax on your rental, and we absolutely cannot exceed the two person max. So no additional guests and unfortunately no children or pets either. Thanks in advance for understanding.

Note that only Verizon and Sprint have a cell signal here. Also note that the "heater" option is not checked. There is no heating in this house! There is a wood burning stove, and we recommend buying wood if you would like a fire. There is kindling provided but if you might have trouble starting a fire in a fireplace, we recommend bringing Duraflame logs with you. You'll be glad you did.

This place is a great opportunity to just chill out, go explore Sonoma county, taste wines - whatever you want. Many guests don't ever even want to leave the place at all. The house is gorgeous, and the area spectacular. You'll love it!

***NOTE: IN MANY CASES A THREE NIGHT MINIMUM STAY WILL BE REQUESTED, ESPECIALLY IF ASKING ABOUT WEEKEND DATES***

Guest Access

Guests have access to the entire house and surrounding property, including the hot tub, outdoor gas grill, and speaker system. Plus it is an easy walk to the Russian River for sightseeing and summer swimming.

Interaction with Guests

The hosts are not present during the visits from guests. When booking is complete, we provide an access code to retrieve keys to the house and we email a "welcome letter" with house rules and suggested activities in the area. We are available 24/7 by phone and check email frequently, but try to leave guests alone.

The Neighborhood

The "neighborhood" (email hidden) road that winds through a redwood forest. There are not many neighbors and the folks you do see out walking are friendly. The best thing about the "neighborhood" is the scenic walks, the proximity to the Russian River and surrounding activities like hiking, swimming, biking, great restaurants, and, of course, wine tasting.

Getting around

Parking is included, and a car is required. Note that a large SUV will have trouble navigating the narrow country roads.

  • Robert's little retreat in the redwoods (email hidden) to stay, and everything is as nice or nicer than pictured here. Inside is a very updated and comfortable home, with everything one might need. I especially loved all the windows and skylights throughout the home. But the real treat is the enormous deck among the redwoods. The views are majestic and there is so much space to relax and enjoy the peacefulness among the trees and the various birds that fly around. This is a wonderful escape. Robert was always very thorough and communicative, and they clearly take great pride in maintaining their home.

  • This place is absolutely amazing... even better than expected. The view, the architecture, the great kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, and a very quiet neighborhood; it's exactly what I dreamed of. We took care to follow all of Robert's directions, as this is clearly a place that is very loved and prized by it's owner (as it should be!). We walked down to the local beach, which was so secluded we felt like we had the place to ourselves! All the neighbors and folks in town were friendly and helpful. Gurneville is just a few minutes away, and we had GREAT meals with groceries from Food for Humans (organic/local grocery store) and really loved eating out at Boon Eat + Drink and ice cream at Flavors Unlimited. I can't say enough good things about this rental, or the really wonderful experience we had. Thank you! :)

  • Robert's cottage in Monte Rio is fantastic. We spent three nights there, as part of a longer 5-night stay in Sonoma.

Before even arriving, Robert's communication was great - from his welcome letter to brief communications right before our stay - we were always in the know about what was going on and what to expect.

Once we arrived, everything was a pleasant surprise - it was all even nicer than as pictured, and fully ready for our stay. The kitchen was stocked with the basics, making a quick stop at the store all we needed to make a few meals at the house. The couch was extremely comfortable, and the indoor/outdoor sound system was a plus.

The spiral staircase is a tight climb upstairs, but fully manageable. I'd recommend a pit stop before bed!

The outdoor area is perfect for getting away from it all - reading on the porch to relaxing in the hot tub, we spent plenty of time outdoors and loved every minute of it.

  • Robert's retreat is unbelievable. The pictures really do not even come close to doing it justice. The entire property is very private, yet also very open and has picturesque views of the Russian River Valley. The surroundings are exquisite and the experience was truly one I will never forget. Robert was also very good with giving suggestions for wineries, shops and restaurants in the area, and this is something that was very helpful, as it is a very remote destination in some ways. This was also my first Airbnb experience, and the entire process was smooth, start to finish. I give this 5 stars and would recommend to anyone!

  • We absolutely loved this treehouse hideway and wanted to stay forever. Perfect for a peaceful, romantic weekend. Close to the river, wonderful views, and architecturally well-considered. Careful attention has been paid to the architectural details and furnishings, inside and out. The deck experience is just stunning! We watched so many birds circling, fog rolling in, stars and moon above the towering redwood tops. Our host was fantastic, quick to respond and everything was explained up front. Highest recommendations! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

  • Fantastic retreat! Beautiful property! My boyfriend & I had the most wonderful time at Robert's architectural cabin. It is even more beautiful than the photos & very well-designed. Robert was friendly, organized, & provided clear communication. The cabin overlooks a redwood forest with a deck perfect for breakfasts, BBQs, happy hour, etc. It was well-equipped for our cooking needs as we prepared many meals at the house. We loved using the deck table as our outdoor prep kitchen, too. The upstairs bed was warm & comfortable. We brought duraflame logs which kept things cozy during the cool night. Since I get cold, I also brought a very small space heater which was handy in the crisp, beautiful mornings. The modern bathroom is great! The cabin is well located for hiking at Sonoma State Beach which is about 15 minute scenic drive away - highly recommended for nature lovers. The rugged coast has easy, beautiful cliff-side trails. We even brought a picnic lunch to the beach. The cabin was also perfect for exploring Sonoma & Napa wineries. Robert graciously recommended an excellent restaurant in lovely Healdsburg for our Easter brunch. We hope to return and use the hot tub & try canoeing along the Russian River. There was so much to see & do, we just couldn't fit it all in. This (email hidden) & Robert (email hidden). We appreciate his hospitality and encourage others to experience his slice of heaven.

  • Great place and exactly as advertised - highly recommended!

Do yourself a favor a book Robert's neighbor Minh Ta for a massage on the deck in the afternoon sun.

  • This cabin represented the perfect getaway for my girlfriend and me. Beautiful property. Humming birds abound. The hot tub was amazing and easy to operate with Robert's instructions. Everything in the house was incredibly comfortable. I'm probably going to have to buy the same couch he has. I really enjoyed being able to make fires at night when it got colder. If you are looking for a place to get away from the chaos of life, this is the perfect spot.

  • My husband and I stay at the Sonoma Russian river escape for 2 nights. This was by far the best airbnb we (email hidden) is greatly designed and we felt we had everything we needed. We loved the hot tub as it gets chilly at night. We also loved the area, people were very friendly. We were only 30 min from the ocean and 30 min from wineries. It felt we had it all: mountain, forest, ocean and a cute little town. Occidental has the best breakfast place ever about 15min drive from the house. We didn't meet Robert but he was very responsive when we had a question. Would definitely love to go back and will recommend the place to friends.

  • Robert's place was beautiful and looked even better than the photos. Very clean and well designed. A cozy, simple little get-away for two people, wonderful even in the rain! Just be careful on the little winding staircase going up to the bedroom loft. Loved the hot-tub, the serene feel, and the amazing views. Would have loved the street light to have been off at night while we were in the hot-tub, but it was still enjoyable. The wood stove heats the place very well - we used mostly Duraflame logs which heated just as well as real wood.
Robert was very attentive throughout and patient with my inquiries. It was a great overall experience for my first Airbnb stay!

About
Outgoing & enthusiastic gay guy who loves to travel, works hard, reads a bunch, and resists easy categorization. Mid 30s and partnered with a great guy for 10 years. When not traveling I'm likely to be at some live music, eating with friends, chilling in a local park or out hiking someplace in the Bay Area. As a host, we expect the same that we give when traveling: being relaxed, being kind, leaving the place in the same condition as when it was found, not having other guests over, and being as loud as you want when out but absolutely being quiet and respectful when home.
