About This Listing
Rosie's Retreat Homestay Studio is perfect for guests who wish to stay longer in Udaipur. The room is extremely large and comfortable and more like a 'home from home'.
I lived in it myself for several years.
Recommended by Lonely Planet Magazine, March 2015. '30 hip Homestays from Rio to Paris' and Harpers Bazaar Travel Blog.
This lovely Studio is also available for long let.
Rosie's Retreat Homestay Studio is the ground floor of Rosie's Retreat Homestay Lakeside. It has its own entrance and can be rented separately or in conjunction with the lakeside apartment.
Rosie's Retreats are located on a quiet side lane just below the city palace. The lane is unsuitable for cars and tuk-tuks so only the occasional motorbike disturbs the peace when people are going to work in the morning or returning in the evening.
The Studio is a very large, beautifully furnished private room with dressing area and a spacious and comfortable seating area. The traditional bamboo ceilings keep the room cool in summer and warm in winter. The Studio has both air-conditioning and a room heater for chilly evenings. Free Wifi is provided.
The bed boasts a really cozy handmade cotton mattress which is luxuriously snug.
The room is furnished with antique furniture (mostly Art Deco) which I have sourced from the local area. The walls are decorated with fabulous old prints of the Hindu Gods and the niches are filled with interesting objet d'art.
A large selection of books and magazines are provided for guests pleasure.
There is a fridge, toaster, kettle, tea, coffee and mineral water.
The luxury bathroom is en-suite to the room and boasts 'the best power shower in India', modern fittings, a hair dryer and lots of goodies for guests.
Aju, my housekeeper, comes every day at 10 in the morning, excepting Sundays. She also makes the best chai in Udaipur on request and gives a fabulous head massage. (Please pay Aju directly for massage). She can also take your laundry which will be returned to you the next day. This is payable to her.
The Studio is within a few minutes walk to The City Palace, home of the Maharajas of Udaipur, the famous 15th Century Jagdish Temple with its amazing architecture and stone carvings, a multitude of excellent restaurants, serving both non-veg and veg dishes, antique and vintage shops, a bookshop and an Internet cafe.
The rickshaw stand is two minutes from the house where you will find many a willing 'tuk-tuk wallah' ready to whisk you off on a tour of the old spice, vegetable and pottery markets. Just by the rickshaw stand you will find the boat stand from where you can take a romantic sunset voyage around Lake Pichola.
Aditya at Lakecity Holidays on Lal Ghat is happy to assist guests with plans for days out to the legendary Jain temples at Ranakpur, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Eklinji temple or to see the unmissable Juna Mahal Palace at Dungarpur.
He can also organize flight, train and bus tickets and change money.
Please note that The Studio does NOT have a terrace or a view being the ground floor of the property.
Udaipur is universally known as one of the worlds most romantic cities, earning itself the nickname 'Venice of the East'.
Come and enjoy!
I look forward to welcoming you to my home in Udaipur.
This room has no view or terrace. It is a studio apartment on the ground floor of the house.
Please note that check in is after 12 noon to allow time for room preparation.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can contact me at any time either by telephone or email. There will always be someone around to help with any problems if I am not in Udaipur.
The Studio is very close to The City Palace, numerous restaurants and interesting antique and vintage shops.
There is a rickshaw stand one minutes walk from the house. Lakecity Holidays Travel Agency is on Lal Ghat and Aditya will happily make any travel arrangements for my guests whether it be flight tickets, bus, train or taxi.
Other Things to Note
The Studio has free Wifi and is equipped with a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a toaster.
Please turn off outside lights when coming in at night and please lock all the doors when going out.
Please treat Aju, my fabulous housekeeper, with respect.
I can recommend this place. It is very central located and quiet at the same time. The room was spacious and tidy and equiped with everything you need. Good restaurants and a nice place for your having breakfast is close by. Felt safe there.
We were in Udaipur for a special event at the city palace. Rosie's place is in a great location and it took us 5 minutes to walk to the venue from there. She was absent during our stay and had left Aditya in-charge. He personally made sure our every need was met and all went smoothly. The studio has charming decor and all the comforts of home. Aju, the housekeeper is a charming woman and she offered to clean the studio even though it was her day off. The friendly neighborhood and spectacular lake views made it all worthwhile. We would happily return to stay at Rosie's again.
I had an excellent stay at Rosie's homestay. Her studio blends comfort - such as a large, new bathroom with running hot water, nice big bed and wi-fi connection - with a tasteful and original Indian decoration. Moreover, wherever one goes in the Lal Ghat neighbourhood, it is sufficient to say the magic words "I am Rosie's guest". One will be treated with the utmost attention and friendliness. The recommendations received upon arrival were very useful and trustworthy. Rosie's accommodation is also safe for individuals travelling alone or going to Udaipur for the first time. Special thanks goes to Aditya, the local travel manager for pick-up & sightseeing who was extremely helpful and kind. In sum, Rosie's place is the best you can get if you're looking for a private accommodation. Make sure not to miss the rooftop terrace with lake view for drinking your morning tchai!
Thank you Philipp.
This is a very confusing review for potential guests.
The Studio, which Philipp rented, does not have a roof terrace. The roof terrace is exclusive and private to the Lakeside apartment.
Presumably, Philipp was invited to use it by the guests in the other apartment.
If I had to describe Rosie's place in one word, it would be 'sublime'.
We stayed here for 3 nights (one of us in the retreat, the other in the studio) and loved every minute. Rosie has literally thought of everything & anticipated every need, and her place is full of warmth & charm. The rooftop terrace is a special spot to watch the sunset, star gaze, practice some yoga or just retreat from the busy streets of Udaipur.
Aju the housekeeper is charming and doesn't let the language barrier get in the way of making conversation. Little Joy living next door is noisy in the mornings but also the most beautiful little boy and his exuberance only added to the experience for me.
I regret that we didn't stay longer, but I hope to come back to this special place.
awesome experience! the studio is very spacious and perfectly centrally located. the bed is really comfy. the hot water shower is great. rosie's recommendations for restaurants and shopping opportunities have been really helpful. and most important: rosie was a great host, available for answering our text messaged questions and for having a beer after dinner on the rooftop of rainbow restaurant. that's the kind of uncommercial surplus you don't get in a hotel...
I have never enjoyed a stay as much as the three days I spent at Rosie's. What's more I found a perfect companion in her, breezing around the city in the afternoons checking out old havelis, and winding up the day with her over beer at Rainbow's. Rosie is fiercely honest, intelligent, and lovable. I saw the almost fanatical attention she pays to the safety and comfort of her guests, and am not surprised that she is getting such rave reviews. As for the room, it's a very tastefully done and very well-provided haven, spotlessly clean. The location is a miracle: being only a minute from the throbbing heart of the city, and still providing a quiet retreat from it - to repose, to read (the rooms are very well provided with books), to take a quiet breath or a nice long shower before attacking the city again.
I am definitely coming back here as soon as I can!

About the Host, Rosie
Hello, my name is Rosie and I have been living in Udaipur for twelve years. I have a long connection with India as my ancestor, Lord Cornwallis, was Governor General of India twice (his picture hangs in the house) and my mother's family were involved in the tea and jute business in Assam.
I am an antique dealer specializing in unique decorative treasures from in and around Rajasthan.
I spend my summers in Transylvania where I am restoring The Magic Cottage in the Harghita Mountains. It is soon to be another Airbnb gem.
I love Udaipur and I am sure that you will too. I look forward to being your hostess in this beautiful city of lakes.
