Rosie's Lakeside Retreat Homestay is a newly renovated self-catering house in the heart of the Old City of Udaipur. It is located in a quiet back lane just below the city palace. The lane is unfit for cars and tuk-tuks so only the occasional motorbike disturbs the peace when people are going to work in the morning or returning in the evening. It has its own private roof terrace, overlooking Lake Pichola, exclusively for the use of my guests.
This idyllic two floor apartment has been tastefully refurbished with all modern facilities and has been lovingly furnished with traditional antiques sourced from the local area. The traditional bamboo ceilings keep the room cool in summer and warm in winter.
The bedroom has a luxury king size bed with a handmade cotton mattress and the window looks out on to the lake. It is fully air-conditioned and there is also a room heater for chillier winter nights. The room has a music system which supports USB and other media devices excluding CD's. A large selection of books and magazines are provided for guests' pleasure.
The fabulous luxury bathroom boasts 'the best power shower in India', hair dryer and lots of goodies for guests.
There is free Wifi throughout.
Outside the bedroom is the 'breakfast terrace' where guests like to take their morning coffee.
The fully equipped kitchen has a coffee machine, gas hob, fridge and oven, toast and grill.
On the second floor is the beautiful roof terrace looking out over Lake Pichola and the palaces beyond. Super comfy cushions on the traditional hand carved stone jarokhas make for cozy reading or relaxing next to the coal brazier in the evenings. There is another bathroom on the roof with loo and wash basin. This is also where you can find the new yoga mats which are provided for your morning sun salutations.
The house is within two minutes walk of the City Palace, home of the Maharajas of Udaipur, and the famous 15th Century Jagdish Temple with its amazing architecture and intricate stonework. the boat stand, from where to catch one of the regular boats to take you on a sunset voyage around the lake, is practically on the doorstep. There is a rickshaw stand just next to the boat stand with many a willing 'rickshaw wallah' ready to whisk you off on a tour of the old spice, vegetable and pottery markets. Lal Ghat is full of excellent restaurants, interesting antique and vintage stores and there is also a book shop and an Internet cafe. Aditya at Lakecity Holidays will organize days out for you to the beautiful Jain temples at Ranakpur, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Eklinji temple or to see the unmissable Juna Mahal Palace at Dungarpur. He also is able to help with flight, train, bus tickets and money changing.
There are nightly performances of traditional music and dance just up the street.
Despite its central location, Rosie's Lakeside Retreat is located on a quiet side street and offers a peaceful sanctuary from the bustle of the city.
With its romantic sunset views from the terrace it is the perfect base for any couple looking for a holiday with a difference and a 'home from home' in India.
Udaipur is universally known as one of the worlds most romantic cities, earning itself the nickname 'Venice of the East'.
Come and enjoy!
I very much look forward to welcoming you to my house in Udaipur.
Aju, my fabulous housekeeper, comes at 10 every morning except Sunday. She makes be the best chai in Udaipur and also gives lovely head massage on request.
Rosie's Retreat Homestay featured in March 2013 Harpers Bazaar blog. This is what they said.
Reaching Udaipur at night is a fairytale with lights flickering on every side of the city’s famed centrepiece, the Lake Palace Hotel ((website hidden)) I’m reunited with a dear friend, Rosie Cornwalliswho I haven’t seen since the ‘80’s, when we worked together at Crolla in London (she married the boss and has ancestors who were Governors of India!) and she’s now based in Udaipur. We stay at her beautiful lakeside apartment which she lets through Ashton Kutcher’s website (website hidden). It’s totally gorgeous and great to be in our own place with its beautiful roof terrace overlooking the lake. The apartment is filled with her lovely collection of antiques and unluckily for my baggage allowance it’s all for sale - I buy a fab painted mirror with a pink Hindu God on it! Dinner’s next door at Jagat Niwas ((email hidden)) - we drink far too many bottles of wine over hysterical stories of how naughty we were back in the day! Next day she takes us on a tour down tiny lanes of the Old city to her secret antique haunts where I find glass beaded panels and Indian silver, all which will be appearing in my next Aboydbazaar ((website hidden)) having been redesigned to make them into something modern and contemporary. We say our goodbyes then travel on to Devi Garh ((website hidden)) , an hour outside Udaipur and the most beautiful palace I think I’ve ever seen. Showered with red rose petals as we walk through the massive entrance, we spend a listless and wonderfully relaxing day by the pool ,exploring the palace and generally recharging as tomorrow we leave Rajasthan and head across the border into Gujarat.
This room has no view or terrace. It is a studio apartment on the ground floor of the house.
Please note that check in is after 12 noon to allow time for room preparation.
Interaction with Guests
Guests can contact me at any time either by telephone or email. There will always be someone around to help with any problems if I am not in Udaipur.
The Studio is very close to The City Palace, numerous restaurants and interesting antique and vintage shops.
There is a rickshaw stand one minutes walk from the house. Lakecity Holidays Travel Agency is on Lal Ghat and Aditya will happily make any travel arrangements for my guests whether it be flight tickets, bus, train or taxi.
Other Things to Note
The Studio has free Wifi and is equipped with a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a toaster.
Please turn off outside lights when coming in at night and please lock all the doors when going out.
Please treat Aju, my fabulous housekeeper, with respect.
I can recommend this place. It is very central located and quiet at the same time. The room was spacious and tidy and equiped with everything you need. Good restaurants and a nice place for your having breakfast is close by. Felt safe there.
We were in Udaipur for a special event at the city palace. Rosie's place is in a great location and it took us 5 minutes to walk to the venue from there. She was absent during our stay and had left Aditya in-charge. He personally made sure our every need was met and all went smoothly. The studio has charming decor and all the comforts of home. Aju, the housekeeper is a charming woman and she offered to clean the studio even though it was her day off. The friendly neighborhood and spectacular lake views made it all worthwhile. We would happily return to stay at Rosie's again.
I had an excellent stay at Rosie's homestay. Her studio blends comfort - such as a large, new bathroom with running hot water, nice big bed and wi-fi connection - with a tasteful and original Indian decoration. Moreover, wherever one goes in the Lal Ghat neighbourhood, it is sufficient to say the magic words "I am Rosie's guest". One will be treated with the utmost attention and friendliness. The recommendations received upon arrival were very useful and trustworthy. Rosie's accommodation is also safe for individuals travelling alone or going to Udaipur for the first time. Special thanks goes to Aditya, the local travel manager for pick-up & sightseeing who was extremely helpful and kind. In sum, Rosie's place is the best you can get if you're looking for a private accommodation. Make sure not to miss the rooftop terrace with lake view for drinking your morning tchai!
Thank you Philipp.
This is a very confusing review for potential guests.
The Studio, which Philipp rented, does not have a roof terrace. The roof terrace is exclusive and private to the Lakeside apartment.
Presumably, Philipp was invited to use it by the guests in the other apartment.
If I had to describe Rosie's place in one word, it would be 'sublime'.
We stayed here for 3 nights (one of us in the retreat, the other in the studio) and loved every minute. Rosie has literally thought of everything & anticipated every need, and her place is full of warmth & charm. The rooftop terrace is a special spot to watch the sunset, star gaze, practice some yoga or just retreat from the busy streets of Udaipur.
Aju the housekeeper is charming and doesn't let the language barrier get in the way of making conversation. Little Joy living next door is noisy in the mornings but also the most beautiful little boy and his exuberance only added to the experience for me.
I regret that we didn't stay longer, but I hope to come back to this special place.
awesome experience! the studio is very spacious and perfectly centrally located. the bed is really comfy. the hot water shower is great. rosie's recommendations for restaurants and shopping opportunities have been really helpful. and most important: rosie was a great host, available for answering our text messaged questions and for having a beer after dinner on the rooftop of rainbow restaurant. that's the kind of uncommercial surplus you don't get in a hotel...
I have never enjoyed a stay as much as the three days I spent at Rosie's. What's more I found a perfect companion in her, breezing around the city in the afternoons checking out old havelis, and winding up the day with her over beer at Rainbow's. Rosie is fiercely honest, intelligent, and lovable. I saw the almost fanatical attention she pays to the safety and comfort of her guests, and am not surprised that she is getting such rave reviews. As for the room, it's a very tastefully done and very well-provided haven, spotlessly clean. The location is a miracle: being only a minute from the throbbing heart of the city, and still providing a quiet retreat from it - to repose, to read (the rooms are very well provided with books), to take a quiet breath or a nice long shower before attacking the city again.
I am definitely coming back here as soon as I can!

About the Host, Rosie
Hello, my name is Rosie and I have been living in Udaipur for twelve years. I have a long connection with India as my ancestor, Lord Cornwallis, was Governor General of India twice (his picture hangs in the house) and my mother's family were involved in the tea and jute business in Assam.
I am an antique dealer specializing in unique decorative treasures from in and around Rajasthan.
I spend my summers in Transylvania where I am restoring The Magic Cottage in the Harghita Mountains. It is soon to be another Airbnb gem.
I love Udaipur and I am sure that you will too. I look forward to being your hostess in this beautiful city of lakes.
