  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kawehi's spacious, eclectic hale. She is a most gracious hostess, and we felt quite pampered. Breakfast on the lanai with the beautiful foliage and soothing burbling fountain, and the attention of sweet Mr. Princess were awesome. (We discovered he has a shoe fettish! Too funny!). And nap time on the side lanai with the tinkling wind chimes was so refreshing! We found Kawehi's restaurant suggestions to be excellent. And we were so pleased to find a well stocked wine rack available for a very reasonable price. The only thing we would have preferred is a double bed instead of twins, but we recognize the greater versatility she has with separate beds. All in all, Hale Kawehi is a very lovely place, and we would definitely stay here again. It was perfectly located for all the things we wanted to do in Hilo.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Kawehi's. The place is huge, beautiful, full of character, and very good value for the amount of space and privacy you are afforded. It was lovely to meet and chat with Kawehi about her travels and love of Hilo - we took her recommendations for where to eat and drink and wished we could have stayed longer, and especially enjoyed breakfast on the balcony before we left. • My husband and I spent 7 nights in Hale Kawehi in Hilo. It was lovely. Full disclosure--we both love cats. The first morning we spent at this home we were greeted by the sweetest tabby cat who continued to greet us every time we returned from an outing. At Kawehi's request we did not invite kitty in, but we spent much time on one of the two covered patios with him outdoors. It was our goal to experience every day living in a less touristy part of Hawaii which is why we chose Hilo. This house--it's large--is welcoming, comfortable and homey. Kawehi is a generous and knowledgeable hostess. Her restaurant suggestions were especially helpful. The kitchen is fully equipped and breakfast on the patio is a treat. We felt that we achieved our goal--an authentic, relaxing Hawaiian experience. We give this guest house and Kawehi five stars! Anne Kass

  • A friend and I only spent one night at Hale Kawehi, but we wish it could've been more! The home has such great character, and Kawehi was extremely accommodating. Next time I visit the Big Island, I know where I'll be staying!

  • It is a great house in a good location. Plenty of room. It is a bit worn and neat freaks might find it needs a good scrubbing.

    Response from Kawehi:

This is a great house and location. The house is a vintage home and does not need a good scrubbing, i.e. to be confused with old does not mean it needs scrubbing. None of my other 30 reviews indicate this, and as a matter of fact they praise how clean it is. There was lots of mud that guests tracked in the house from their hiking shoes and left the place very messy and untidy. Perhaps a hotel room would have better suited this guest.

  • We didn't get to meet the host since we arrived late on Christmas Eve, but she'd set up the place for us and it was absolutely lovely. We ate breakfast on her beautiful porch, listening the birds (and a few excited roosters)...it was absolutely perfect, and an amazing respite so close to the airport. I'd certainly stay again. She was also very helpful in advance, allowing us to ship an item to her place that really helped us out. Great communication, easy check in.

  • My mother and I had a wonderful time at Kawehi's antic filled place. We had a fully stocked kitchen, porch, side porch, large living room and our bedroom with a very nice and clean bathroom and tub.

Kawehi had delicious papayas and other fruit for us every morning. It was so nice to get up and have have our own little breakfast. It's so much nicer than staying in a hotel. It was so private and comfortable. Kawehi is a wonderful host. She is available for any questions but is very aware of your privacy.

One reminder is to bring mosquito repellent to the Hilo area :)
We will return very soon :)

Aloha.. I am a kama'aina- indigenous Hawaiian, living in a tropical environment My residence is ideally located in the heart of Hilo with lots of authentic Hawaiian ambiance and charm. My yard is very lush with many tropical plants. I was born and raised in Hilo and this was my primary home growing up so this is a special place that I want to share with travelers. E Komo Mai (welcome) and allow me to pamper you and offer you what is truly Hawaiian. With all my local knowledge of this area, I can help make your visit memorable. You will be enchanted with Hale Kawehi. I love traveling, hosting, cooking, entertaining, avid golfer, canoe paddler, hula, and truly enjoy the outdoors. Hawaii has 12 months of outdoor living. I believe staying here will be a very nice experience reminiscent of old HAWAII
