Neighborhood highlights

Sunnyside Neighborhood

The story of sunnyside:
Sunnyside is a special place. Its origins date back to 1912, and today nearly all of its residents are descendant generations that date back to the Great Depression. To call them indigenous wouldn’t be far off, though they tend to enjoy going by “Sunnysiders”.

In a 2014 LNP article, Ad Crable does a great job outlining Sunnyside's history. For many, it’s hard to imagine living the way they do, but get this: the article states specifically that every Sunnysider interviewed had the same sentiments about their home: glad and proud to have grown up there.

Sunnyside is technically Lancaster city limits, but you wouldn’t know it. Unlike the city, the housing stock here is only growing smaller, with neighbors claiming that only 28 buildings are still occupied. Many of these buildings are original cottages or mobile homes in fair to poor condition.

Daryl, the pastor at Sunnyside Mennonite Church is passionate about the work he and his church are doing to help and support the community. They’re doing the real work: everything from helping to replace a neighbors leaky roof to providing a community dinner every Tuesday night.

The more you dive into the history of Sunnyside, the more it becomes abundantly clear how mistreated and misunderstood Sunnysider have been over the years. They didn’t even have running water or sewer until 1989.

Before that however, it thrived. It was initially developed in 1912 as a small, middle class summer cottage development to escape from the city and heat. A closeby awasis on the river.

Believe it or not, it was this exact experience that drew me to sunnyside initially. Many years ago, on our fifth wedding anniversary, my wife and I were gifted a night stay at our friend’s cottage (45 Belmont St --the one immediately next door to Twin Sycamore). We were blown away by how beautiful and peaceful it was; only a mile from home!

Like most vacation homes, to live there would almost ruin the lore, but what a place to visit and escape!

As it turned out, my good friend Lane owned the two lots next door, and we joined forces in hopes to piggyback on, and replicate what our dear friends have done so well.

We wanted to build a modern day version of the original 1912 sunnyside summer cottage to share with our families, friends, and with others.

Twin Sycamore is likely the first successful development in sunnyside in most of our collective lifetimes. We are thrilled to be able to share and host you as guests, and only ask that you please honor and respect our neighbors.

Please remember that we are guests in their community; their little piece of paradise. Feel free to join pastor Daryl for church on Sunday if you are interested —you may even get lucky enough to strike up a conversation with a Sunnysider in passing. Either way, I guarantee you won’t regret it.
Thank you and God bless
