Neighborhood highlights

The village of Martrois has about sixty inhabitants and is surrounded by woods, fields and meadows.
In Pouilly-en-Auxois (about 8 km away) you will find two supermarkets, a butcher-caterer, an organic grocery store and micro-brewery (L'Épicerie-Comptoir – and the beers from La Voûte are excellent!) and two bakeries, as well as most services, banks, post office, tourist office, hairdressing and wellness salons, pharmacies, doctors and health practitioners.
The area is rich in producers (organic and others) of vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, beer, wine, aromatic plants… On Friday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. there is the Serein Valley farmers' market in Marcilly-Ogny, near Pouilly-en-Auxois, and on Sunday mornings in July and August there is a small food market in Vandenesse near the canal…
On Saturday mornings, you will find other local producers at the Saulieu market (about 30 km away), lively and friendly in the summer under the lime trees. Open 7 days a week, the Maison de Pays de Pouilly-en-Auxois also offers an assortment of specialties from the region.
Martrois is located in the middle of Burgundy. From there, you can explore in all directions to discover its various landscapes: vineyards, forests of Châtillonnais or Montbardois, Morvan Regional Natural Park...
Dijon and Beaune, cities of culture and history, are only three quarters of an hour away, as is Montbard, birthplace of the naturalist Buffon.
The immediate surroundings are rich in castles, museums, abbeys and high historical places: Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, Bussy-Rabutin, Bourbilly, Semur-en-Auxois, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, Fontenay Abbey, the great forge of Buffon, Alesia and its Muséoparc… to name a few.
Just down the road, 2 km from the village, the Burgundy Canal unfolds its old towpath for peaceful walks. In summer, guided mini-cruises aboard "La Billebaude" are offered by the Pouilly tourist office; these will take you through the "Voûte", a tunnel that crosses the watershed. They can also be combined with bike rental or a ticket for the little train that runs through the Ouche Valley.
The reservoirs near Grosbois-en-Montagne or Panthier invite you to swim or sail; the one in Cercey allows beautiful bird watching. And if you prefer to walk from the cottage without having to take your car, a trail will lead you to a small Romanesque chapel nestled in the woods, then to the castle of Soussey-sur-Brionne where you can visit the 13th century keep.
Finally, the great gourmet restaurants of Dijon, Beaune, Saulieu do not make us forget the good addresses of the surroundings that I will be happy to advise you on.

Lives in Martrois, France
After years in other countries, Burgundy has remained my chosen terroir. Even though I work in writing, land and nature have always been central to my life. The well-being of the little world I inhabit is important to me – plants, animals and people! The pleasure of sharing is what motivates me to welcome you.
