The MaxiRenella Historic Nobleman's Loft & Terraces

Welcome to One of Rome's Ultimate Homesteads

Centuries ago, a Roman Nobleman commissioned the building with majestically high wooden rafter ceilings and steps from his personal apartment on the second floor - known as the piano nobile - leading down to the horse stables below (now the wine cellar). The original wooden beams and arches are still there today and the place has a theatrical feel to it - it begs you to invite friends over to share in the feeling of history.

Selected by the airbnb staff who stayed and filmed here for the upcoming airbnb hosting in Rome video.

A very large ancient apartment with 4 Bedrooms each with its own bathroom and with 3 eat-out terraces (one large one tiny, and one in the adjacent apartment off of the bedroom).

The two upstairs bedrooms have double beds which CANNOT be separated into two singles. There is a long narrow room downstairs with two beds and a bathroom. It is ideal for two children or one adult. Not for two adults and no good at all for a couple - beds are not side by side. The fourth bedroom is located adjacent to the main apartment, giving a little bit of space from the main living area.
There's also a double sofa-bed in the living room, and cots can be provided to make the total number of beds available 12.

The Renella Nobleman's Loft:

* Near Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere - easily walk to everything in historic Rome - benefit from Rome's most charming restaurant and artisan area. It has been so since 185BC.

* You are surrounded by hundreds of great restaurants and bars - just meters away
from our quiet street. The best bread in Rome is baked 50 feet away.
* Huge 25 foot ceilings of original wood rafters - Roman Arches
* Cotto Floors - the same family in Naples still bakes them!
* Very comfortable living room area w/ large couches, high end music system
* Large Screen Plasma TV for PC hook over Fireplace - also high end stereo for PC hook up. Your PC/Mac/Ipad plugs in right at the couch. There's an ipod dock there too
* Home gym with running and cycling TechnoGym machines. Yoga instructor on call.
* Eat-out Terraces - 1) Stone table with seating for 6+. 2) Tiny terrace off the kitchen for two. A view of the charming inner-courtyard to match the painting on the wall 3) The 4th bedroom's inner courtyard terrace suits four people. Charming.
* Designer Kitchen -washer/dryer/dishwasher/toaster/coffee/German Stove with BBQ
* Air Conditioning in all bedrooms and living areas
*3 bedrooms - all with own ensuite bathroom/shower add the adjacent pad for 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
* Total of real beds (3 queens/double) and several temporary beds available for a max of 12 people.
* WIFI, international TV etc.

We try hard to please. Please see the reviews.

The real difference between this and a hotel is 1) HEAPS more space 2) A REAL kitchen - approved by a top NY chef that visited recently 3) This has been the real home of a Roman for centuries 4) You are the ONLY valued guests - we treat you as such!

The owner Martin will answer your questions before and during your stay. I mean REALLY assist you. If you want blow by blow help as you plan and enjoy Rome, we can be there for you. If you want complete privacy and no communication as you get away form email etc for a while that's great too. See the reviews....

BOOKED UP? Never fear! I have a rival Roman Jewel that is probably free:

Why do I say it's Historic? Well the building probably dates from the 1600s but it was built on top of ruins from far before. Last week, we scratched into the terrace wall and found a Roman Arch buried inside! I posted pics (email hidden)w it is not every day that you have to call in the archeologists when you are making a coffee corner on your terrace! No Wonder Rome's subway has taken decades for a few miles... Please have a look at the pics!

If you are going to Barcelona next, I have a heap of friends with great places so I can refer you if you'd like an insider's opinion.

The Space

This is one of the top places to stay in Rome for families or mature groups of friends. We don't accept college student groups.

We are in a quiet cobblestone backstreet not far from the best bakery in Rome a short walk from everything.

Guest Access

You'll have access to the entire floor of the medieval building - complete with Roman aqueduct on the terrace! There are steps leading down to the old stables but that is now just my mini-cellar....

4 bedrooms, 2 downstairs two upstairs. 3 balconies. All in a super fun but quiet corner.

Interaction with Guests

We are hyper present for our guests. We substitute for ours of (website hidden) and provide you connections to the best contacts that we've put together over the years. We're there if you have a problem and are never intruding - we are mostly helping you by email yet live nearby if you need us.

  • "The Loft" is in a great location for experiencing Rome. It is spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Martin and Elizabeth made ever effort to make us feel welcome and informed of the possibilities available to us. We were very impressed by how well the description matched what we found there. The transportation they offered from the airport to the "Loft" and back was on time, flawless, and more economical than a cab. Great service!

  • We absolutely loved the loft. The location in Trastavere is outside the normal tourist areas but you can get to most of the popular tourist destination by walking (the best way by far to see Rome) or by taxi. The neighborhood is great and very lively both day and (especially) night. It would take a month to hit all the great restaurants within a 10 minute walk.

The loft itself was great. Truly a unique place to stay. Quiet and relaxing. Since we only ate our breakfasts in we didn't really take full advantage of the wonderful kitchen. We were on vacation, who wants to cook? Especially with all the great restaurants nearby. With only four of us we had plenty of room to spread out. After a long day of sight-seeing the terrace was a wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine before dinner.

One of the best parts of staying there were the value-added services that Martin, Elizabeth and Kay provided. Their suggestions on things to see and do were great. Everybody on Airbnb should have a wiki. We were contacted during our stay to make sure everything was going well. We booked our ground transportation both in and out through them. We might have saved a few euro using taxis instead but with the door to door service we got without problems was more than worth it.

We also booked two private tours with Pina. One at the Vatican and another at the Colosseum/Forum. These two tours were more than worth the money. Even if Pina hadn't been a gracious and knowledgeable tour guide (and she was), just the reduced hassle getting into and through the venues was worth it. We would have seen all the sites without Pina but I'm positive we wouldn't have gotten as much out of the visits without her and it certainly would have been more stressful. I highly recommend her services to any Rome newbies like us.

In short we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Rome and staying in the loft definitely enhanced the experience. I'd highly recommend it to anybody coming to Rome.

  • what a wonderful apartment. if you want plenty of space and a great location this is it. Great hosts - although we did not use Martin and Elizabet for anything outside of booking a car service I always felt that if I needed help with anything that they would be there for me. They kept in touch to make sure that we were happy with the apartment and the welcome booklet contained lots of useful information about the apartment and the area of Trastevere. Very comfortable and spacious apartment! 10 out of 10!

  • My family had the best time staying at The Roman Nobleman's Historic Loft! Martin and his team were very accommodating, communicative and overall, fabulous hosts.

The property itself exceeded expectations with regards to location. Everything was within walking distance and made getting around Rome so memorable and hassle-free.

Highly encourage guests to stay here!

  • I stayed in Martin's apartment, The Roman Nobleman's Historic Loft, with my family of 6 people. This apartment was truly amazing and a highlight of our tour around Italy.

His sister met us for checkin, and checkout was extremely easy. The apartment was perfect so we did not need to contact them during our stay, however they were accessible if needed. Martin even helped connect us to a driver from the airport and an amazing tour guide for the Vatican and Colosseum. She was great and really enhanced our stay and knowledge while in Rome!

My family found the location of the apartment unbeatable! While it is a bit of a walk (though a beautiful walk) to the major attractions, it is located in the cozy and vibrant neighborhood of Trastevere. Here, the atmosphere was of a real Roman neighborhood, including wonderful cafes, restaurants, and places to go out every night during our stay.

The apartment itself was very spacious, clean, and simply beautiful. All rooms had their own bathroom, including showers, and therefore was ideal for 3 couples staying there. However, one of the three bedrooms was considerably smaller (essentially a narrow rectangle) with two single beds in it. This was not expected based on the photos, but this was only a minor issue. Our favorite aspect was the terrace, which is perfectly represented in the photos. We spent several evenings drinking wine outside- a perfect experience during a trip to Rome! In addition, all amenities and more were provided: wireless internet, washer and a dryer, dishwasher, clean towels, etc.

Overall, my family and I would STRONGLY recommend staying at Martin's apartment! Martin's help with transportation and tour guides along with the apartment only enhanced our time in Rome and was more than we expected! We will definitely stay there next time!

  • Simply the best organized and most helpful host of our month long holiday in Italy and France. Outstanding, friendly and humorous advice coupled with the experience of being an American (his father was a US diplomat posted to Rome) who grew up in Rome. We were very pleased with everyone he or his sister Elizabeth recommended.
The MaxiRenella is in a great area with wonderful restaurants, bars, gelaterias, and piazzas within 3 blocks. The apartment is very spacious, secure and quiet with the windows closed. Leave them open (they are quite big in the front room) and enjoy the sounds of Rome.
Martin's sister lives close by and will be your main contact when you stay here. She is interesting, helpful, knowledgeable and quick to respond to your SMS or email.

  • I wanted to share a brief note about our amazing and adventurous trip to Rome and our experience with Martin and his amazing property.

First of all, when you are staying with Martin, you get his entire family and extended network at your disposal, and boy we needed it!

We arrived at the apartment and everything was as promised, even the refrigerator was pre-stocked with food. The place was large and spacious, the beds and accommodations were exactly as promised. We couldn't be happier.

The apartment is a very comfortable space. Having room to move around is such a great change from a cramped little hotel room, this is the way to go. Also the completely equipped kitchen really makes you feel like you are in your own private vacation home. Everything is there! The showers have great strong water pressure and the location can't be beat. You are moments away from so much evening nightlife.

Unfortunately for us, our young daughter was gravely sick and it forced us to divide up our party and a number of us returned early.

Martin and his network of family/friends came to the rescue for us. We needed help finding emergency medical care, and they made it all happen. I cannot thank them all enough! No matter your concern or worry, trust that everyone will really take care of you.

Two bits of advise. If you are traveling with small children, let them know ahead of time so they can properly prepare the space (which they can). And bring an email equipped smart phone or other device . It is invaluable if you have anything you need.

Thank you Martin, Elizabeth and Rossana! We hope to see you again very soon. Ciao!

  • Our group (6 people in total) spent 3 fantastic nights in the Loft. The property itself is utterly beautiful (breakfast on the terrace was magical) and is in a wonderful location right in the heart of Trastevere surrounded by local bars and restaurants. The apartment is within walking distances of all the main sights in Rome but is nicely tucked away from the hustle and bustle (and high prices) of the tourist areas around Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona etc. The only negative of our stay is that it was only 3 nights! We hope to be back and many thanks to Martin and his team who made our trip to Rome such a memorable one.

  • Martin's apartment is superlative. Comfortable, incredibly spacious, and located in a vibrant part of Rome. The outdoor terrace is lovely for enjoying coffee and a slice of the nearby bakery's pizza bianca. The bedrooms are quiet and the beds comfortable. The kitchen has all the tools to prepare a first-class meal (there is no shortage of ingredients to be had in the local markets).

Martin is a truly awesome host. Professional, responsive, attentive, and helpful -- it was clear that he genuinely cared about us and strove to ensure we had a great experience during our stay. This included not only the usual visitor stuff (orientation and recommendations), but also extraordinary help -- my wife suffered a medical emergency while we were out in Rome, and Martin (and his family), went out of their way to help us out, far far beyond what we could have ever hoped for.

We wouldn't hesitate to stay at Martin's loft again, and eagerly look forward to returning someday soon!

  • The appartment really has a great historic charme and pure quality interieurs. And, maybe priceless, the more than excellent insider tips by the hosts about places to visit and local restaurants. Apart from visiting all these prominent sightseeing highlights of Rome, make sure you reserve some time to enjoy the Nobleman's Loft and the local neighborhood, it's worth it.
