Where you’ll be

Seville, Andalucía, Spain

The San Lorenzo neighborhood.

The San Lorenzo neighborhood is one of Seville's most historic areas, being one of the places with the most ancestry and lordship, with numerous stately buildings.

On Santa Clara Street, we find the cloister of the convent of the same name, currently being restored by the Andalusian Regional Government and which preserves the façade of the former University of Seville. Inside, one of the most emblematic towers, that of Don Fadrique, dated 1252, a transition between Romanesque and Gothic art. On this street, we also find buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Palacio de Santa Coloma, a civil architecture building with a grand doorway flanked by Corinthian pilasters.

Within the area, although it could be considered a separate neighborhood, we have Calle San Vicente, where we find the convent church of San Antonio de Padua (17th 17th century), residence of the Franciscan order and canonical seat of the Brotherhoods of Buen Fin and La Pastora.

Calle Eslava leads to Plaza de San Lorenzo, whose most emblematic building is the 15th-century parish that gives it its name and a bell tower from 1757. Next to the parish, the Basilica of Jesus del Gran Poder (1965), Seville's devotional center. In this square, the monument to the sculptor Juan de Mesa, made by the sculptor Sebastián Santos Calero, was inaugurated on February 18, 2005.

Cardenal Spínola Street leads us to the Convent of Santa Rosalía, whose church is undoubtedly a must-see and where we can find works of great interest dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. It is one of the two Sevillian temples where we can contemplate the Dormition of the Virgin.

The Plaza de la Gavidia is a popular meeting point, in the center of which we find the monument to Daóiz, a work made in 1889 by the sculptor Antonio Susillo. Between this square and Calle Jesús del Gran Poder is what was once the church of San Hermenegildo (1614-1620), the only remaining building of the Jesuit College, which is now an exhibition hall and formerly the seat of the Andalusian parliament.
