The Cottage is suspended amongst the coconut, banana and mango trees. It overlooks the pool to the west with the orchard garden to the south. It has one double bedroom with basin & shower and two cabin style single bedrooms. Open plan kitchen with bar, two balconies large enough to dine on with lounge chairs, and an outdoor shower that is not to be believed!

The space
Coconuts, hummingbirds, monkeys, passion fruit, lime, banana and mango trees are an arms-length away. Suited to those wanting a relaxing, romantic or private get-away break, this villa and, for that matter, this area of Barbados is much quieter than the main tourist areas on the South and West coasts, and benefits from an almost constant gentle soothing breeze. The Cottage is especially intimate and relaxed. The open plan dining area, along with the fully fitted kitchen, are steps from the living area and large covered porches which are perfect for al fresco dining and cocktails. The Cottage sits in the shadow of what is reported to be the oldest and largest mango tree on Barbados, dating back to colonial times.

Guest access
You will have a place to park outside of The Cottage. The grounds around the Villa are shared, so you can socialize with the guests staying in the other two villas or you can retreat to your cottage for some downtime.

Other things to note
I live here with my 7 dogs & they will be sure to greet you daily!

St Phillips, Barbados, Saint Philip, Barbados

There is so much to do. Nearby is Crane Beach, recently granted status by the NYTimes one of the 10 best beaches in the world. Oistins Fish Market and local produce stands will make your meals memorable. And of course your are welcome to hundreds of miles of beaches. The drive up the eastern coast is as spectacular as any Big Sur California or Patagonia drive. Take a boat ride with Peter Milne from the Yacht club or twist his arm to go waterskiing. Diving, snorkeling and cliff jumping are a few other unique nearby adventures.

Or don’t do anything adventurous. Sit by the pool and read a book. Take a walk through miles of caning roads in the early morning mist of Barbados. Breath. Converse. Cook.

Be warned this is not for the Disney or luxury resort crowd. This is open-to-the-trade-breezes lifestyle as the Bajan’s live. You will not be living ten feet from your suburban neighbor’s back yard. You will not see another condo from your villa. No tour schedule, no concierge tipping, no reservations for dinner and you may have to suffer a frog crossing the doorstep or the resident plantation dogs who wander in at any hour. This is life as you would live if you were to move to Barbados – who knows, after staying at Oughterson Villas, you just might.

I am Peter Milne and I own Oughterson, the second oldest house in Barbados, or so they say. I build furniture and joinery from the plantation yard. I moved from the UK in ‘98 and built 3 cottages and a pool in the grounds, amid the palms and mango trees. The place is fizzing with Wi Fi but there is no TV, but if you gaze out into the lush surroundings, preferable from a hammock over a cold drink and a good book, then there is always something absorbing to watch. It is a discrete rural setting, so if you can hear a car, that will be your new friends you met at the beach coming over for a visit…better check the fridge. There is a pack of friendly Border Collies that provide the security and also information on the very best places to snooze. I have built a bunch of boats and admit to a preference for cooking good food my pals have reared, caught or grown, outdoors in good company, so if that is your thing too, I am happy to share with you. Oh yes, the main house has a full band set up, so if you can play, or even aspire, then join the jam. Included in the cost, is meeting you at the airport with a cooler…well, travel is trying, (sounds like a reasonable excuse to me). I will pre stock your fridge, at cost so your holiday begins by the pool not the supermarket check out. Then welcome you to the big outdoor table for a first night’s meal that I will cook for your pleasure. So it ain’t west coast glam, but then it ain’t west coast hustle either. But if you reckon a holiday should be described using words like… tranquil, green, relaxed, quiet, and friendly, then this might just be the place for you and your family. Peter Milne
