The Space

Perched on a hilltop with a magnificent 360 degree vista of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina, Santa Barbara Island and the Santa Monica Mountains, spend the evening watching the sunset over Boney Mountain as it fades to black. The stars come out by the millions- and you watch for comets and satellites passing overhead from the comfy Adirondack chairs.
You retire to the comfortable restored interior of 'THE ALUMILODGE'- a 1957 AIRSTREAM 22 ft. FLYING CLOUD, and plug your iPod into the Bose Acoustimas sound system while opening a chilled bottle of local area wine you brought from the refrigerator. The dinette is set for a romantic dinner which you prepare in the onboard galley and gas stove. After another look at the Milky Way, you retire to the Queen size rear bed with quality linens and feather duvet- the fresh Pacific breeze lulling you to sleep in the silence broken only by the occasional owl 'hoot' or coyote howl in the distance. You awake to experience the sunrise with our French coffee press and another day in a paradise you can't imagine is so close, yet so far from Los Angeles.
The area also offers vineyard tours, wine tasting rooms, excellent restaurants, hiking/ biking the Backbone Trail, trail rides and even an 18 hole golf course all within minutes.
Pool (seasonally) and internet hot spot available to guests.

  • The airstream trailer was such a cozy little nook to come to after our wedding!! We arrived really late at night, so it was kind of hard to find, but VERY worth it for the fantastic view of the canyon the next morning over coffee!! The trailer was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for a quick stay! The only thing is that drive up to the trailer was a little tough without 4 wheel drive!

  • Let me be up front about one thing. We hated hated HATED the LA area with a passion. That being said, the one bright, shining spot in our excursion into the area was Murray and Kay's beautiful little Airstream on a hill. We felt welcome from the minute we drove up and Kay offered us a dip in the pool (we declined, but it was tempting). The location itself was tremendous! The view of the Pacific and Catalina Island and the surrounding mountains was incredible! And the stars! Oh my! At night, the stars come out by the millions, and it was overwhelmingly beautiful. The trailer itself was remarkably cozy, and the queen size bed was amazingly comfortable. Even the "world's smallest shower" was charming and fun. The experience of being embedded in one of the largest population centers in the United States, yet feeling like you are the only two people for a hundred miles is one that should not be missed.

My wife and I would return to the LA area for one reason, and one reason alone: to spend one more magical night in Murray and Kay's Airstream. It's just that good.

  • The view was absolutely gorgeous and the hosts were pleasant and helpful. It was a lovely spot to spend a night and relax! The vintage trailer was cute and cozy, but we were a little put off by the exposed capped wires that a few other people have mentioned. It also was awkward to crawl over the bed to get to the bathroom, which was only separated from the bed by a curtain. We were glad we are comfortable with each other as a couple! It would have been awkward if it was our first trip together.
Overall we loved our stay though, and the location really can't be beat.

    Response from Murray & Kay:

The 'exposed capped wires', although not 'live' have now been eliminated.
The trailer is indeed a compact facility with most of the amenities of your home.
The bed has been substantially enlarged at the expense of easy access to the bathroom. The 40+ pictures more than adequately illustrate the layout of the interior.

  • we had the best experience staying on Murray and Kay's property. The airstream was beautiful, clean and stocked with everything you may need for a night or two away. We took advantage of the huge pool and visited with all the lovely pets! Start to finish, quite an enjoyable and refreshing experience.

  • The listing was above and beyond what we had expected. It was quiet, romantic, and very well-kept. It truly felt like an escape from LA!

  • The weather was perfect and the Airstream was amazing...the bed was so comfortable! The view was awesome and we had a blast. One note is that the dirt road up to the Airstream is a bit tricky so go slow...

  • This trailer was a little slice of paradise. My girlfriend and I spent only one night up there and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset we've seen in a long time which that gave way to a beautiful nights sky full of stars. Its everything you could ever want in a getaway. Great hosts, beautiful location on a hill of solitude, beautiful views, close to the beach and close to town. We can't wait till our next one day get away.

  • We loved our airstream experience! The setting was stunning and it was the perfect getaway after a busy few days in the city. We were able to put together a nice dinner, sit out under the stars and had a very comfortable nights sleep. We would definitely recommend it to family and friends looking for a unique and memorable experience!

My wife and I are Christian, semi-retired film industry people who thrive on adventure and meeting interesting people. Over the past 13 years I've restored several vintage Airstream trailers and consider them the ultimate in camping comfort. One of my restorations now actually resides in Japan! We used to love to travel and camp in our 1957 'FLYING CLOUD' AIRSTREAM but now enjoy allowing others to share the experience without the hassle of driving, towing and fighting for a spot in a crowded and noisy campground. We live on a 20+ acre ranch property (with some overly friendly goats, dogs and horses) in the Santa Monica Mountains- surrounded by thousands of acres of open space and direct access to the famous Backbone Trail, which is renowned for hiking, horseback and mountain bike riding. We are also only 6 miles from the glorious beaches of Malibu. Our hilltop location is the perfect deluxe camping experience, with ocean views, and base to enjoy this unique mountain range and Mediterranean climate which occurs in only 6 places in the world.
