The Writer's Refuge is a place with an interesting story. It began when Petra, who was looking for property on Whidbey Island, went to Seattle, where she happened to meet Marilee, who had property on Whidbey for sale. They divided the acreage, and Petra purchased half of it. She completely renovated the unfinished, off-grid cabin located on the property and built a home about 300 feet away.
When the house and cabin were finished, Petra founded the Writer's Refuge, a Washington State corporation. She was committed to supporting writers and other creatives in achieving their goals, and many of them followed their Muse to Whidbey Island, where they found the solitude they yearned for in the cabin.
Marilee married George and, a number of years later, they decided to build a home on the parcel that adjoined Petra’s. Petra suggested that they buy the home she had built instead, and they did just that. The three of them decided to work together to keep the Writer’s Refuge alive. Now, Petra manages the business aspects of the Writer’s Refuge and George is your on-site host.
Petra is a writer and editor. George retired from the FAA in 2010, and Marilee still works there.
