Nestled in a corner of our lush tropical garden, Haleakala Cottage is the perfect place to call your temporary 'home' while you're in Maui - so you can really experience 'living' here, rather than just 'visiting.' Live like a local - it's fun!

The space

A sweet little studio cottage, fully permitted. Please note, this is a 'studio' so the bedroom is not separate.

We're set amidst a stunning tropical garden of a 2 acre all-organic (green! sustainable!) estate in Huelo, on Maui's unspoiled North Shore. Cal King bed, full kitchen, 3 lanais, fabulous "outdoor" hot & cold shower under the stars, gas barbecue, use of swimming pool (shared) and your own private hot tub. Gather herbs from our garden ... and we offer bananas and fresh eggs in season.

This little cottage is a perfect "home" for you on vacation - not a sterile hotel room. We live on property, so will be very happy to answer questions about the island etc. Something very different from the usual "tourist" experience! But please note: WE HAVE NO TV RECEPTION (but we leave a dozen cool DVD's for you and there's a great little video store 15 mins down the road). Our internet service isn't suitable for streaming, but more than adequate for e mails. Cell service can be spotty, but we provide a landline for your exclusive use in your cottage and all on-island phone calls are free.

Also please note: we do NOT do daily maid service, though it can be arranged at extra charge. You are always welcome to exchange towels in our guest laundry though.

Some days, you'll probably simply choose to stay "at home" - all the facilities to do that are right here, including a beautiful 44 ft free-form swimming pool and, of course, our gorgeous, landscaped organic gardens. Save money - cook "in" - and enjoy the romance of having your own private Haiku retreat on Maui's wild north shore. We're away from tourist crowds, but close enough to town to find a fabulous restaurant if you don't feel like cooking. Great little local style 'boutiques'; local artistans & jewelers; great local, fresh cuisine. Once you've discovered our side of the island, you won't want to leave.

We provide super quality filtered drinking water and full laundry facilities - all linens provided - and some welcome goodies for you upon arrival.

Guest access

Your hosts, Jeff and Sharyn, are very accessible (love that texting!)

Guests have our private cell #s if there are any questions/ concerns and we're good about returning messages! We love texts!

Interaction with guests

We interact with guests as much as, or as little as, guests want. We always take our cue from guests! Texting makes life easy, so neither of us have to worry about waking someone up etc ... some 21st century techie stuff is good!

Other things to note

We're fully licensed and permitted and would recommend that you ONLY stay in 'legal' vacation rentals and B&Bs. (Unpermitted establishments are subject to County enforcement action and your booking may not be honored! So do be careful, ok?)

Kindly note that our prices do NOT include the 13.42% taxes - and we'll bill you for those separately on arrival. As I said, we are LEGAL. (Please be sure to ask any potential hosts if they are licensed. Maui County is enforcing against illegal rentals at the moment and we've heard from several guests who have lost their accommodations at the last minute).

Again, please note: WE HAVE NO TV RECEPTION (but we leave a dozen cool DVD's for you and there's a great little video store 15 mins down the road). Our internet service isn't suitable for streaming, but more than adequate for e mails. Cell service can be spotty, but we provide a landline for your exclusive use in your cottage and all on-island phone calls are free.

We make the security and privacy of our guests a priority and as such request that only registered guests use our facilities. If you would like non-registered guests to visit you while you are here, please make arrangements in advance of your arrival. Mahalo.

We ask that you leave our space tidy when you depart - all dishes washed, trash and recycling emptied into the bins at the laundry, and all food waste in the compost bucket ready for the chickens. Excessively dirty places on checkout will be assessed an additional cleaning fee at our discretion. If you need maid service during your stay - do let us know - and we can provide that for a negotiable fee.

We're a quiet, hideaway romantic retreat on a private 2 acre estate - so we're for like-minded people who appreciate being away-from-it-all, immersed in nature ... and who will leave our place as beautiful as (or even more than!) they found it. The only other rule is: have fun, appreciate each other - and let Maui work its magic!

Great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful north side of Maui. You truly are out in the jungle and both the plants and the scenic ocean views are amazing. It's about a ~30 minute drive to Paia so you'll need to stock up on a bit of food to cook, but for a beautiful place to relax, this is hard to beat. I highly recommend stopping by Ho'okipa Beach in the late afternoon to see the Sea Turtles.

This cottage is a little slice of heaven. If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain, then this is the spot for you! Seriously though, we had the best honeymoon we could've imagined here. It's a small cottage in what is basically a rain forest. You learn quickly to embrace indoor/outdoor living, keeping the windows and doors open (with screens) at night. It is so amazing to wake up to a downpour at 5 a.m. in the jungle with no cares in the world. Sharyn is a most hospitable host. We arrived to a bottle of fresh wine, fresh eggs and fruit. The eggs and fruit were especially amazing and delicious. There are chickens and fruit trees on the property. We enjoyed banana pancakes and smoothies that were fresh as could be! There is also a very nice pool on the property. Everything is landscaped to be very private. There is really nothing like taking a hot shower in the cold rain outside! Yes, as some other guests have pointed out there are a few bugs and geckos. Personally, I thought the geckos were pretty cool (they chirp, who knew?), and the bugs were really not that bad (and this is coming from someone who lives in South Texas). You're in the jungle, so you better embrace it, right? There isn't AC, but honestly you don't really need it. The windward breezes are very refreshing (again, coming from someone in South (URL HIDDEN) was 104 today!). The Haleakala Cottage is also the perfect jumping off spot for exploring. Your are at mile 3.5 of the Road to Hana. You are also about an hour or so to the beaches in West and South Maui, along with Haleakala. The kitchen is extremely well equipped (I've been telling my husband I want that gas stove)! We cooked many of our meals at home. There is a washer and dryer right next door as well. Sharyn is a super responsive, friendly and accommodating host! We can't wait to go back!

Sharyn's cottage is on a beautifully landscaped and secluded property. You have a walkway right along the ocean that makes for stunning and romantic views. It's also on the road to Hana which makes it a very centrally located location for outdoor activities, which we took full advantage of. The hot tub was amazing and kept super clean. Access to laundry room was also available. Sharyn and Lori are also incredible at communicating, and every question and request was answered right away. They really know the area and we loved all of their activity and food recommendations. That being said, this place is not for everyone. Everything in the listing is 100% accurate, but coming from the North East without prior experience in this climate meant that we did not get the full magnitude. No AC on a hot Hawaii summer day is REALLY hot. Secluded means a 15 minute drive to the nearest store. Jungle means bugs and geckos are unavoidable. We really loved our stay but it was an amazing feeling to be back in air conditioning after. If you love hot weather and want to really get away you'll fall in love with this place.

Response from Sharyn:
Sorry that you guys were not completely comfortable here. :( We have designed all of our cottages to take advantage of the tradewinds and with doors open, they all have great cross ventilation so that air conditioning isn't necessary. We really appreciate being able to be connected to nature all the time with the natural ventilation instead of needing to be closed up with air conditioning on. :) We love our geckos as they do keep the mosquito populations down around our cottages. We have also found a great natural bug deterrent - cedar oil - that is safe for everyone but bugs don't like it, so centipedes and cockroaches won't cross our cedar oil barriers keeping them OUTSIDE. Occasionally when the winds die down, we will get some small pineapple bugs (beetles) but they aren't interested in humans or food - they just fly in and hang out. There are no snakes on Maui, so we find the minor inconveniences of a few bugs and the sweet geckos a suitable trade off!

Great quiet location on north side but is only a short car ride from some great scenic views. Also good for relaxing and having a good BBQ and soak in the hot tub

Fantastic location (if you want something close to the road to Hana and are looking for peace and quiet, jungle style). We had a pleasant stay and Sharyn was very kind to give us detailed instructions to get there - it is a little complex to find the place in the dark. Also, if you are pregnant or have back issues, the strip road is rough and not even so lots of bumps, but it's only a 5 minute ride. The room is cozy, safe & comfortable. We had no issues with insects. Lots of plug points for charging and wifi is good. Hot tub is amazing and very private :) I recommend not having too many bags as the room is small and there is basic furniture. Sharyn has some nice beach chairs and towels available to take to the beach. Excellent value for money!

I recently stayed at the studio cottage for two weeks while on a solo retreat and it was incredible. It truly feels like you live on a beautiful oceanside farm all by yourself. I'll never forget the trade winds, their cross breeze, and the sweet sounds they made. The fresh eggs were delicious and I enjoyed feeding the chickens my daily compost offerings (once Lei taught me how to do it). The communications with owner and manager were wonderful. The cell service and wi-fi are iffy but I didn't go there to chat on my phone or to disappear online. That said, there was enough wi-fi to watch a Netflix program or two, at night, which was nice. When I was given a last-minute work assignment, the owners were able to help me hire a talented local for some help that I needed to complete it. My only (very small) issues with the rental were: 1. Soft bed (I prefer hard beds but that's just me) - though the linens and coverings felt perfect. 2. Too much chlorine in the jacuzzi (I did not try the pool). This news may comfort most, but I prefer more gentle and natural sanitizing methods i.e.; saltwater, epsom, etc. Overall, this airbnb experience was one of the best I've had. They have a wonderful thing going here. I'm going to miss that long peaceful drive up the road to their beautiful farm. I enjoyed it every single day. Also, the cliff walk and cliff view is a sight! Farm and ocean together, there's nothing like it.

The location is really private and scenic, with tropical foliage and birds all around. There is a private hot tub, as promised. The cottage is right next to the shared laundry room, and someone comes to service the hot tub daily in the afternoon, so you can really only use it privately in the evenings after dark. There was a great selection of fresh fruit and flowers when we arrived, along with some chocolates. There is a towel warmer, which was great, and the outdoor shower is really nice too. The bed is super comfortable. Everything was very clean. I highly recommend staying here.

Response from Sharyn:
We only service the hot tub when you are out, so you should be able to use it privately any time you are in the cottage. My apologies if you had a different experience than that. I will reinforce that with my staff. :)

My husband Jeff, and I, have lived in Maui since we fell in love with it in 1992. We'd stayed in B&B's all through England and Wales, and thought "Why would anyone want to stay a hotel?" We love the personal touches and we love being able to give people a 'real' experience of Maui.

In my 'spare' time, I write poetry, short stories and scripts - and I also perform in live theatre and theatre improv. Maui is fun!
