About This Listing
Nestled in a corner of our lush tropical garden, Haleakala Cottage is the perfect place to call your temporary 'home' while you're in Maui - so you can really experience 'living' here, rather than just 'visiting.' Live like a local - it's fun!
A sweet little studio cottage (legally permitted, so your reservation is always secure, permit # BBPH 2009/0015) set amidst a stunning tropical garden of a 2 acre all-organic (green! sustainable!) estate in Huelo, on Maui's unspoiled North Shore. Cal King bed, full kitchen, 3 lanais, fabulous "outdoor" hot & cold shower under the stars, barbecue, use of swimming pool (shared) and your own private hot tub. Gather herbs from our garden and we offer bananas and fresh eggs in season.
This little cottage is a perfect "home" for you on vacation - not a sterile hotel room. We live on property, so will be very happy to answer questions about the island etc. Something very different from the usual "tourist" experience!
Some days, you'll probably simply choose to stay "at home" - all the facilities to do that are right here, including a beautiful 44 ft free-form swimming pool and, of course, our gorgeous, landscaped organic gardens. Save money - cook "in" - and enjoy the romance of having your own private Haiku retreat on Maui's wild north shore. We're away from tourist crowds, but close enough to town to find a fabulous restaurant if you don't feel like cooking. Great little local style 'boutiques'; local artistans & jewelers; great local, fresh cuisine. Once you've discovered our side of the island, you won't want to leave.
We provide filtered drinking water and full laundry facilities - all linens provided - and some welcome goodies upon arrival.
WE LOVE LAST MINUTE TRAVELERS!!!
Your hosts, Jeff and Sharyn, are available all day, and are happy to return messages in the evening. Guests have our private cell #s if there are any questions/ concerns.
Interaction with Guests
We interact with guests as much as, or as little as, guests want. We always take our cue from guests!
We're very much a 'local style' neighborhood where people are relaxed, friendly and into the organic lifestyle. A jumping off point to our three small local towns - Haiku (15 mins to restaurants & groceries), Paia (a quaint beach town with a modern, fun vibe), and Makawao (a 'paniolo' / cowboy town with a unique Hawaiian flair). Then of course ... you have golden beaches, giant sea turtle resting places, tide pools, boogie-boarding ... hiking the crater ... exploring the winery, the lavender farm, the goat farm (Surfing Goat Dairy - how cool is that?) ... the famous 'road to Hana' with all its riches ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... Maui's beauty will take your breath away. We think it's the most romantic island in the world!
No public transit here - you'll need to rent a car to explore Maui
Other Things to Note
We're fully licensed and permitted and would recommend that you ONLY stay in 'legal' vacation rentals and B&Bs. (Unpermitted establishments are subject to County enforcement action and your booking may not be honored! So do be careful, ok?)
Kindly note that our prices do NOT include the 13.42% taxes - and we'll bill you for those separately on arrival. As I said, we are LEGAL. (Please be sure to ask any potential hosts if they are licensed. Maui County is enforcing against illegal rentals at the moment and we've heard from several guests who have lost their accommodations at the last minute).
We're a quiet, hideaway romantic retreat on a private 2 acre estate - so we're for like-minded people who appreciate being away-from-it-all, immersed in nature. The only other rule is: have fun, appreciate each other - and let Maui work its magic!
Can you think of a better place to curl up with a book? Or jump on a floating pool mat and soak up the sun.
We had an amazing stay at the Sharyn and Jeff's Huelo Point lookout! If you are looking for a quiet spot on Maui away from all the resorts; this is the perfect place. There's lots to do nearby yet it's quiet and relaxing if you decide to stay in - the personal hot tubs are definitely enjoyable.
Sharyn and Jeff were really helpful and accommodating during our trip. We had breakfast goodies waiting for us when we arrived and we were allowed to check out late on our last day! The North shore is definitely the wilder coast with stronger winds and waves but it didn't bother us one bit. We were out and about every day to discover the different spots in the vicinity! We will definitely be back!
Sharyn was a fantastic host; let us in early, posted a greeting on the door of the cottage with her phone number, left us with numerous treats and basic necessities (i.e. coffee and bread and wine...). On top of that she provided all the support we requested for exploring the beaches and island..a cooler, beach chairs.and Ice Packs! Place was sparkling clean with new stove and excess linens. Couldn't beat the location for peace and quiet. You should go visit the tourist spots, do some shopping, hit the beaches, and then come "home" to the hot tub. Thank you Sharyn.
Sharyn was very welcoming. She had wine chilled in the refrigerator waiting for us. The cottage was very private and comfortable.
Thanks so much Chris & Jeanne and THANK YOU for reminding me about the pots! I'd forgotten that a guest had burned a couple of the pans and I hadn't replaced them yet!! Apologies!! Shall have lots of gorgeous new pans standing at attention to greet you when you return!
My wife and I had a lovely stay at the Haleakala Cottage. Sharyn is very warm and welcoming, checks in at the beginning of your stay to make sure you're doing well and if you have any questions, then really lets you on your own to enjoy the beautiful amenities and gardens surrounding the cottage.
The cottage has a great kitchen, even with a dishwasher. And we found it stocked with coffee, eggs, wine and bread when we arrived.
There is no TV reception, but there is a TV with DVD player. We found our cell phone reception to be about half strength, but there is also wireless internet in the cottage that was very reliable and fast. There is also a laundry room cottage just next door, which was excellent.
Our stay was great and we will definitely come back or recommend staying with Sharyn to friends.
Advice: This is definitely an out of the way spot for people who are looking to relax, listen to the breeze in the trees, and be by themselves. And less of a base for hitting up city/night-life spots. There was a rare, massive wind storm that toppled some trees across the driveway when we were there. And although they had everything sawed apart and cleared well before we had to hit the road for the airport in the morning, it was a good reminder of how remote the cottage is. It was amazing how on top of it they were, and how helpful about the whole thing. Amazing.
See you soon again, Sharyn!
Bless you both! And definitely come 'play' theatre improv with us next time guys! Thanks so much for pointing out my guestbook needs to be updated - I'd forgotten we'd put WiFi in that little cottage (finally! it was the hardest one to do - how could I forget!) Come back again - we'll try not to serve you up any more dramatic storms! :)Sharyn & Jeff:) ... Huelo Pt Lookout
I had a very great time at Sharyn's place. The house, the view, the place and the host, were just perfect! Simple and quiet it's a little peace of paradise there! I'll recommande it to everyones who want a real trip on Mauï, far from the big resorts and the tourist traps. Sharyn welcome us with fruits and flowers, very friendly and funny. I wish i' could return some day!
My husband, myself and our 7 month old son stayed at the Haleakala cottage for three nights. It was a wonderful place in a serene setting, very comfortable, clean and full of charm. When we arrived we had several treats waiting including fresh eggs, homemade banana bread, wine, and coffee. The outdoor shower is so relaxing as well as the hot tub perfect for star gazing. The location is perfect for exploring the north side of Maui but you will definitely need a car. Sharyn is an absolute delight and very pleasant to work with.
This is a place for someone who wants to escape to a secluded natural, peaceful and relaxing setting and not for those who are wanting to the resort/beach experience.

About the Host, Sharyn
My husband Jeff, and I, have lived in Maui since we fell in love with it in 1992. We'd stayed in B&B's all through England and Wales, and thought "Why would anyone want to stay a hotel?" We love the personal touches and we love being able to give people a 'real' experience of Maui.
In my 'spare' time, I write poetry, short stories and scripts - and I also perform in live theatre and theatre improv. Maui is fun!
GREAT cappuccino and baked goodies - try their cheese-cake! It's to die for!
It has everything you need and you won't find any place like it for relaxed, local-style 'color'! (AND you can buy a great bottle of wine to go with your candlelit dinner - at 'home' of course!)
Absolutely! Breakfast, lunch & dinner!
If you love healthy, local food - better than ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD - then Mana Foods is where you'll think you've died and gone to heaven! Great 'to go' section, too - perfect for the beach!
