About this listing
Nestled in a corner of our lush tropical garden, Haleakala Cottage is the perfect place to call your temporary 'home' while you're in Maui - so you can really experience 'living' here, rather than just 'visiting.' Live like a local - it's fun!
A sweet little studio cottage (legally permitted, so your reservation is always secure, permit # BBPH 2009/0015) set amidst a stunning tropical garden of a 2 acre all-organic (green! sustainable!) estate in Huelo, on Maui's unspoiled North Shore. Cal King bed, full kitchen, 3 lanais, fabulous "outdoor" hot & cold shower under the stars, barbecue, use of swimming pool (shared) and your own private hot tub. Gather herbs from our garden and we offer bananas and fresh eggs in season.
This little cottage is a perfect "home" for you on vacation - not a sterile hotel room. We live on property, so will be very happy to answer questions about the island etc. Something very different from the usual "tourist" experience!
Some days, you'll probably simply choose to stay "at home" - all the facilities to do that are right here, including a beautiful 44 ft free-form swimming pool and, of course, our gorgeous, landscaped organic gardens. Save money - cook "in" - and enjoy the romance of having your own private Haiku retreat on Maui's wild north shore. We're away from tourist crowds, but close enough to town to find a fabulous restaurant if you don't feel like cooking. Great little local style 'boutiques'; local artistans & jewelers; great local, fresh cuisine. Once you've discovered our side of the island, you won't want to leave.
We provide filtered drinking water and full laundry facilities - all linens provided - and some welcome goodies upon arrival.
WE LOVE LAST MINUTE TRAVELERS!!!
Your hosts, Jeff and Sharyn, are available all day, and are happy to return messages in the evening. Guests have our private cell #s if there are any questions/ concerns.
Interaction with Guests
We interact with guests as much as, or as little as, guests want. We always take our cue from guests!
We're very much a 'local style' neighborhood where people are relaxed, friendly and into the organic lifestyle. A jumping off point to our three small local towns - Haiku (15 mins to restaurants & groceries), Paia (a quaint beach town with a modern, fun vibe), and Makawao (a 'paniolo' / cowboy town with a unique Hawaiian flair). Then of course ... you have golden beaches, giant sea turtle resting places, tide pools, boogie-boarding ... hiking the crater ... exploring the winery, the lavender farm, the goat farm (Surfing Goat Dairy - how cool is that?) ... the famous 'road to Hana' with all its riches ... waterfalls ... bamboo forests ... Maui's beauty will take your breath away. We think it's the most romantic island in the world!
No public transit here - you'll need to rent a car to explore Maui
Other Things to Note
We're fully licensed and permitted and would recommend that you ONLY stay in 'legal' vacation rentals and B&Bs. (Unpermitted establishments are subject to County enforcement action and your booking may not be honored! So do be careful, ok?)
Kindly note that our prices do NOT include the 13.42% taxes - and we'll bill you for those separately on arrival. As I said, we are LEGAL. (Please be sure to ask any potential hosts if they are licensed. Maui County is enforcing against illegal rentals at the moment and we've heard from several guests who have lost their accommodations at the last minute).
We're a quiet, hideaway romantic retreat on a private 2 acre estate - so we're for like-minded people who appreciate being away-from-it-all, immersed in nature. The only other rule is: have fun, appreciate each other - and let Maui work its magic!
This little cottage was perfect for my travels to Maui! I was looking for a relaxing place to de-stress for the week, and this place provided that. The landscaping around the cottage was great in providing immense privacy and a secluded feel. It was great enjoying late afternoons and evenings out on the lanai, lounging in one of the chairs or soaking away in the hot tub. There was usually a lovely breeze for sitting out, as well. The pool provided a refreshing dip and I enjoyed following that up with a nap in the hammock under the palm trees. No worries if you want to get out and do some activities, though. Maui is small enough that I was able to make day trips all around the island, often venturing out in the mornings and afternoons and returning in the evenings to relax. I highly recommended skipping the resort stay, and instead experiencing Hawaii with the locals.
The host canceled this reservation 11 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
No, this didn't happen. As a host, I hit the pre-approve or decline key, but I got bumped straight into the 'accepted' page. I immediately contacted Kristina and apologized, because a couple of the days they'd wanted were booked. She and Brian were able to pop into our lovely Rainbow Honeymoon Cottage for 5 days instead and I know they'll LOVE it! OK, Airbnb - over to you - you make it very difficult for hosts to contact you with a straight out question!
hostess with the mostest ...
Huelo Pt Lookout ... a romantic retreat ...
Overall: Pretty Good. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to get away from it all and don't mind driving 3+ hrs/day to get to the good beaches (or simply, don't care about visiting beaches).
1. Location is VERY out of the way. It's far away from most things to do in Maui. Example: to get to any of the "top 15 beaches" in our guidebook, we'd have to drive 1.5 hours. We found ourselves driving a LOT.
2. Road to get in is a narrow dirt path with large potholes. You share this road with oncoming traffic, which gets awkward at times.
3. Showering (outdoor shower) was a bit stressful because there were mosquitoes out there.
4. Taxes are not included in the price, so have cash on hand. We were not expecting this.
1. Romantic, secluded cottage in lush jungle setting.
2. Sharon is very nice, and we were never left wanting for anything.
3. It's a great place if you want to avoid others and don't mind driving a lot.
4. It's close to Hana (which we didn't particularly care for, as there were way too many tourists and mosquitoes while we were in Maui, but is still worth checking out)
"Aloha" Pooja - I totally agree with you about taxes! I have taken this matter up with Airbnb many times - my apologies! I will continue to nag them.
Did you miss Ho'okipa Beach, only 20 mins from us? Or Baldwin, about 25 mins? or Pa'ia Bay, about 20 mins? Or Baby Beach? Kanaha? all within 30 mins of us ... oops!
My apologies for our road - we'd just been inundated with rain for the last 2 weeks and that last half mile gets very 'pot holey'! All fixed now though, thank goodness! Unfortunately, rain also means mosquitoes if the trade wind drops, which it did - I put extra citronella candles outside and our lovely trade wind is back, blowing them away again back to the jungle - yay!
Being close to Hana is a 'plus' for most people who are looking to be 'away from it all', and driving distances are all on my site, my dear. But yes, it's absolutely a great idea to research before you come, because the North Shore of Maui is VERY different from the more 'touristy' side, yes? Always fun to try both!
The place was perfect! We really enjoyed our stay there! Highly recommend and would definitely like to stay there again. Everything was so clean and comfortable bed, great towels! And great dishes!
Everything was just amazing! The beautiful cottage, the lush vegetation around it, the private hot tub, the horses along the way...very very relaxing. and Sharyn! She is such a great person and a perfect host for us, around if you need her but otherwise very respectful of the guest privacy. We had just one single wonderful conversation with her and that was it during our stay in the Haleakala Cottage. I would totally recommend this little piece of paradise!
We had an amazing stay at the Sharyn and Jeff's Huelo Point lookout! If you are looking for a quiet spot on Maui away from all the resorts; this is the perfect place. There's lots to do nearby yet it's quiet and relaxing if you decide to stay in - the personal hot tubs are definitely enjoyable.
Sharyn and Jeff were really helpful and accommodating during our trip. We had breakfast goodies waiting for us when we arrived and we were allowed to check out late on our last day! The North shore is definitely the wilder coast with stronger winds and waves but it didn't bother us one bit. We were out and about every day to discover the different spots in the vicinity! We will definitely be back!
Sharyn was a fantastic host; let us in early, posted a greeting on the door of the cottage with her phone number, left us with numerous treats and basic necessities (i.e. coffee and bread and wine...). On top of that she provided all the support we requested for exploring the beaches and island..a cooler, beach chairs.and Ice Packs! Place was sparkling clean with new stove and excess linens. Couldn't beat the location for peace and quiet. You should go visit the tourist spots, do some shopping, hit the beaches, and then come "home" to the hot tub. Thank you Sharyn.

About the Host, Sharyn
My husband Jeff, and I, have lived in Maui since we fell in love with it in 1992. We'd stayed in B&B's all through England and Wales, and thought "Why would anyone want to stay a hotel?" We love the personal touches and we love being able to give people a 'real' experience of Maui.
In my 'spare' time, I write poetry, short stories and scripts - and I also perform in live theatre and theatre improv. Maui is fun!
