The Space

Charming historic train station (ca.1830) located near the southeast corner of Cayuga Lake, across the street from Stewart Park, the Visitor Center and the Cayuga Waterfront Trailhead.

Perfect for reunions or weekend getaways, and for families visiting one of the universities, as a base of operations for outdoorsy adventuring or exploring the Finger Lakes wine country - and especially for those with a penchant for historic architecture (American folk) and charming romantic spaces.

Property has a bedroom in the main house, a cottage next door (station master's house) with a bedroom upstairs with views of the lake, and a lounge downstairs which could sleep 2 additional guests. There is also a 3rd cottage, an art studio, with a bedroom upstairs which could sleep 2.

Bathroom and kitchen are located in the main house, situated 12 feet from the cottage. There is enough room in the driveway to park 8 vehicles.

Please contact me before booking. We want to make sure it is the right fit.

Guest Access

Walking distance to swimming beach and Stewart Park. A short bike ride (or 30 minute walk) to the Ithaca Farmer's Market, and a five minute drive to downtown Ithaca and Cornell.

The main house has a full kitchen and bathroom, and a bbque grill outside. The cottage has a mini fridge, coffee maker and toaster, and a tv and dvd player.

Interaction with Guests

There are 2 very friendly indoor/outdoor kitties who live here, and they love staying at their home. We don't like stressing them out by making them leave whenever we have guests. This situation may not be for everyone. But if you are a cat-lover, you're going to love it.

If you don't mind the kitties hanging around, we're happy to rent it to you. If you don't mind someone stopping by to feed them, that's great. If you don't mind feeding them yourself, even better, and in that case we can offer a discount in the rental rate.

Please inquire within and we'll arrange something that works for both of us.

The Neighborhood

Ours is a residential neighborhood located along the southeast corner of Cayuga Lake, a short 5-minute drive to downtown shops and restaurants and to Cornell. Although the abundance of trees and gardens, and lake views, make it appear as though you are out in the country, the property is located on a busy road, and during certain times of day the traffic can be a bit noisy. The Visitor's Center, Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail are just across the street, and the public swimming beach at the Cornell sailing club is half a mile down East Shore Drive to the north. The Ithaca Falls are less than 5 minutes away.

Getting around

The TCAT bus to downtown Ithaca is a 3-minute walk away. It picks you up at the outside edge of Stewart Park and goes straight downtown to the Commons.

Cab fare from downtown Ithaca to the property is $7.

Other Things to Note

As of now we only have 1 large bathroom in the main house.

  • The house is absolutely beautiful, very comfortable and homely. My colleagues and I were so happy to have a place here we could relax during what was quite an intense working fortnight. Sitting on the veranda on a warm eve, BBQ on the go, looking out on the lake ... Couldn't wish for more. Oh and Wylie is an absolute sweetheart. Very communicative and helpful. Thanks!

About
'Signalcamp,' as the property is nicknamed, is owned by Wylie Schwartz, a native Ithacan and a doctoral student in art history at Binghamton University. In addition to being the coordinator for Ithaca's monthly First Friday Gallery Night, Wylie is an independent curator - one of the cottages at Signalcamp, called 'station923,' becomes a project space for artists from May through October. Wylie lives here with her partner Kevin who studies the corn genome and their two very friendly cats named Freddie and Blue. Wylie purchased the property - a former switchback to the railroad (ca.1830) - from her beloved friend, British visual artist Paul Chambers, who lovingly restored it from a derelict state and turned it into a work of 'living sculpture.' Wylie views herself as simply one of many caretakers along the way who has looked after this special place, and she loves to share it with others.
