The space
Conveniently located in the heart of Finger Lakes wine country. this unique property offers an ideal space to think, write, relax and get away from it all.

Originally a Methodist Episcopal church (ca.1850), the 'Waterburg Church' consists of one large open room with three walls on wheels to move about as you please. There is one full-sized bed, and a futon mattress is available for guests.

Note: I have a 2-night minimum, but am open to single-night stays in between. Please ask if you're looking to book only one night.

The space has a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom with a claw-foot tub and a shower. The bathroom has no walls, but the moveable walls can be arranged to make a separate space. The building is situated on five acres of country farmland.

There is a large swimming hole just down the street in Taughannock Creek. Walk to the right out of the driveway to the one-lane bridge. Swimming hole is to the right of the bridge.

There is a pond out back which is stocked with large mouth bass and bluegill sunfish. Guests are welcome to fish as long as you have a current New York State fishing license.

The site is ideal for those wanting to write, play music, make art, or to enjoy peace and tranquility in a pastoral country setting.

Local and state sales tax:

The nightly price includes the addition of 8 percent for New York State sales tax. Sales tax is not required for stays of a week or more, so in the cases of guests staying for longer than a week, the price will be adjusted accordingly.

Other things to note
Recent history of the chapel:

The space, a 19th century Greek Revival church, was rescued from a derelict state by British artist Paul Chambers who lived in the area from 1972 until his untimely death from cancer in 2012. In 2002, began the five-year process of restoring the church, and the last of the eight bay buggy barns, from a derelict state, and used the space as his studio and home.

Chambers was known for his enormously provocative abstract conceptual landscape paintings related to his intense concern for lasting international peace, several of which are on display at the Waterburg Church. The Recurring subjects include, Advanced Russian Indian Ocean Initiative; Monday Human Sabbath; as well as a series of works containing a proposed solution a road map to peace in the Middle East, which he has printed on postcards and mailed to world leaders.

Wylie Schwartz is a native Ithacan, and a doctoral candidate in art history at Binghamton University specializing in postwar European art. Both of her listings - the Waterburg church and "Signalcamp" (a former switchback to the railroad, ca.1830) were lovingly restored from a derelict state by her beloved friend, British visual artist Paul Chambers, who turned them into works of 'living sculpture.' Wylie views herself as simply one of many caretakers along the way who have looked after these special places, and she loves to share them with others.
