A very special place to stay on the Bere Peninsula, Devon. This refurbished traditional slate-hung 'one-up-one-down' former silver miner's cottage was built in the 1800s. Set in the Tamar Valley National Landscape and Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, with views of Cornwall and shared use of our quarter acre garden. Full self-catering or you can book breakfast and/or evening meals made by Martin, a professional chef. Self-contained annexe with own private entrance.
The space
A self-contained annexe to Vine House, where we live, Birland Cottage has its own private entrance with a keysafe.
Downstairs, the small kitchen area comes with a two plate induction hob, microwave, fridge, sink, kettle (plus complimentary organic teas, coffee, milk and sugar), toaster and all your cooking, crockery and cutlery essentials. There's also a sofa, dining table and chairs (doubling as an attractive workspace) plus local maps, magazines and visitor brochures to consult. Our quarter acre garden is yours to explore, with great spots for sitting, drinking and eating.
Upstairs, you'll find a double bed, chest of drawers, TV, books to read and a selection of board games, an en suite shower room and great views across the countryside to Cornwall.
Fast, free, full fibre Wifi is available throughout for your work or leisure needs.
If you're cycling or walking, we can store your bike or provide a space for muddy boots and wet gear. And if you’re staying for a week or more, you're most welcome to ask to use our washing machine.
Guest access
You will have the whole cottage to yourself and as guests are most welcome to share our quarter acre garden with us. This comprises two patios, lawns, flower borders, soft fruit patch, mini-orchard and new vegetable potager. There are plenty of places to sit, including the 'actual' vine house garden room. It's a great space for relaxation or indeed work (should you have to!), as it also has Wifi. Martin is always happy to give you a little 'garden tour'!
Other things to note
If you don't want to self-cater, we can provide breakfast and/or an evening meal, prepared in our 5* food hygiene rated kitchen. Please just note, the kitchen is NOT allergen free.
A full breakfast is coffee/tea, orange juice, muesli, fruit compote, yoghurt, our own free range eggs, local dry cured bacon or thyme fried mushrooms, sourdough toast and homemade jam & marmalade. £14 per person. A light breakfast is coffee/tea, orange juice, fruit compote, croissants & preserves. £8.50 per person. We also offer Devon cream teas (2-5 pm only) at £7.50 per person and can make you a packed lunch.
A typical three course evening meal menu is homemade focaccia and olives to start, grilled free range chicken with salsa verde and fresh vegetables from our garden, followed by panna cotta with a homemade fruit compote . A vegetarian main course alternative is also always available. £26 per person. We can also provide special menus for occasions such as Valentine's, birthdays and anniversaries.
We serve you in the cottage (or on the patio) and can take card or cash payments.
In the autumn and spring, as Birland Feats, we hold a Secret Supper Club once a month on a Friday & Saturday, so we can't cook for you then - but you could book to attend! A light breakfast will always be available on the Sunday morning.
We also offer guests a half day Let's Make Fresh Pasta! workshop, a mix of hands on experience and demonstrations from which you'll learn about making different types of pasta, pasta sauces and pesto. A full 'foodie getaway' comprises workshop, dinner, stay and light breadkfast with lazy checkout. Please ask for more details.
