On Douglas Lake at the Smoky Mountain base
Douglas Lake is steps away, with beaches, shoreline trails, and water access right on the property.
A real lighthouse on its own island
A three-story lighthouse with water views from every level and a 360-degree lookout at the top.
Warm, attentive hosts
Guests describe the hosts as kind, responsive, and thoughtful, with farm-fresh eggs often waiting at arrival.
The Lighthouse at Hunkerdown Hollow provides a waterfront experience at the base of the Smoky Mountains. This unique lodging brings you up close to the natural beauty of the Douglas lake resevoir. Home to over 200 species of bird, and recognized as a Bassmaster top 100 fishing lake, the Lighthouse puts you right in the middle of it all! While every window in the lighthouse has a water view, the top level boasts a 360 degree view of water & the treetops, to observe all the beauty of Douglas!
The space
The first floor has a full kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. The second floor is the main bedroom, with full closet. The third floor is a large multifunctional space, which contains a sleeper sofa. It can be used as a office, or creative space!
Please note that you must use stairs to travel from the bedroom to the bathroom!
Guest access
In addition to the entire lighthouse, guests have access to enjoy all of Goat Island, with its varied shoreline and beaches.
Other things to note
The lighthouse is attached to our family farm, Hunkerdown Hollow.
The farm is also home to our family business, Surf the Smokies, where we give efoil surfing lessons at the surf shop on the right when you first enter the farm. You can find more information online or under the Airbnb experiences. (This is also where you can access kayaks/canoe during your stay)
Our farm does have goats, chickens, and a couple of dogs contained within the fenced boundary...all of which could potentially wander down to the island. For that reason, we cannot allow outside animals to stay at the lighthouse.
Our property is rural and you will be immersed in nature. You may encounter various animals or bugs, depending on the season. We do try to deter most of the nuisance pests, but you may see ladybugs, stink bugs, or other insects trying to visit the lightouse during your stay. If so, we do have a hand vacuum available to remove if needed!
We are only able to accommodate one booking per week to allow us time to fully refresh the lighthouse in between guests. Therefore, we will generally have a 4 night minimum, while sometimes dropping to 3 night during the winter.
The water level on Douglas lake will vary throughout the year, with a full level during the summer months, and drawn down in the winter to serve as a basin for rain runoff from the Smokies. While we have no control over the water level, our position on the main channel ensures that we have water access throughout the year though it is a steep incline to access the water outside of summer. We have photos attached to illustrate the typical water fluctuation.

From the host
We are on the lake, but we are in the country! The final 2 roads, both Gator Point and Wander Way are gravel roads. Once you reach Wander Way, you are on our farm, where we have goats, chickens, and dogs all possibly on the road. Please go slow, and take particular caution if you have a vehicle with low clearance. Four wheel drive is not necessary, but is helpful.
Meet your host
Hey y’all! My first name is Amy but I go by Betsy! I have been a cardiac nurse for 21 years! I am a proud mom of two boys! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love to laugh, hike, ride roller coasters, and travel! I treasure traditions! I find peace near the water, so my awesome husband searched until we found this beautiful spot to call home. Now we are happy to share it with others!
