The space

Dar El Ma is a lovingly restored traditional Moroccan house conveniently located in a quiet alley between the hubbub of the two main streets in the heart of the medina.

We have been awarded 2013, 2014 and 2015 Certificates of Excellence by Tripadvisor putting us in the top 10% most popular accommodations in the world for the last 3 years running!

It's very hard to capture the sense of space in photographs of the house but we know that everyone who walks in exclaims (with joy!) at the size and atmosphere.

The house is full of light, peaceful sounds, local colours and ornate detail. There's a hammam style shower/bathroom, a fully equipped large kitchen and a kitchenette, two staircases, a roomy salon, roof terraces, a 'snug' (cosy Berber-cushioned downstairs mezzanine), two toilets, washing machine, wifi and hifi! There are books, maps, boardgames, table football, comfy nooks and plenty of crannies. It's very much a case of make yourself at home...

We have two lovely double bedrooms in the three storey house. The Ferhana bedroom (means happy in Darija) has a comfortable double bed and also a small single bed in a quirky mezzanine up a wooden ladder; perfect for an older child and the Mirror bedroom, so named due to the giant mirror and has a comfortable double bed and also another single bed on a mezzanine reached by a wooden ladder.

Both rooms look out over an inner courtyard and we also have two roof terraces, where you can lounge around and admire the view across the ancient medina, have a barbeque or even take an outdoor shower (modestly screened by palms)!

As you will book the whole house we will not be there but Imane will look after you and make breakfast every day from fresh bread and local produce.

Dar el Ma is opposite a hammam (traditional bath house) which is wonderful to experience - you'll feel wonderfully scrubbed and renewed - and next to the baker, so you'll smell the fresh bread twice a day.

Enjoy Fes - it's a mad and magical place!

The home is located in the old city. We were only there for a day but the home is welcoming and Imane does a great job of making sure we have everything we need. Communicating with her was flawless. We had everything we needed and Imane was a phone call /text away if we needed anything. Thanks!

This is a lovely place to stay in Fes. It is spacious, clean, and well-located. Joe and Claire's friends assisted us with finding the place on arrival, and they were very helpful. Imane made us incredible breakfasts every morning, and she was reachable by text during our stay. The rooftop terrace and shower are great additions to the home.

This is a rare gem in Fez. The amazing space is perfect for two couples ( or more) and the hostess Imane is a very friendly and intelligent young lady. From the time of our arrival throughout our entire stay, this Riad was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle outside. Imane's mom prepared our evening meal which was absolutely delightful as well. I recommend inquiring about this option as well. Great Riad, well situated, amazing restoration work, as seen in the album documenting the work in the Riad. Without a doubt, we would definitely stay here again.

Claire and Joe's place is a wonder. Our family of four really enjoyed our brief stay there, taking in the beauty of the place, appreciating the sweeping views, and being right in the heart of the médina. Joe was great with communicating, and was so kind to arrange for a taxi to pick us up at the airport when we arrived. They have done a tremendous job of renovating their riad and establishing a network of relationships with the neighbors there, who were extremely friendly and helpful even though Joe and Claire were not in Fès during our stay. But without a doubt, the house manager, Imane, is the greatest asset to the place. She is a delightful person and a fantastic cook. Waking up to her amazing and gorgeous breakfasts every morning was like a dream. Because we only had a few days in Fès, her advice and suggestions were particularly helpful to us navigating the area and different culture. There are a lot of stairs in the house. If you do not have an issue with this, we can't recommend this place highly enough!

Dar El Ma was wonderful! Joe, Claire and Imane were super helpful with getting us checked-in and during our stay Imane was on hand to make sure everything was perfect during our visit. We had bright breakfasts on the roof, luxurious showers in the hammam room, and even a delicious tanjia dinner at the house. Highly recommended!

We live on a houseboat in London with our chickens and cats when we're not escaping to the madness of magical Fes. We loved restoring Dar el Ma - delays and donkeys and all - and enjoyed making friends and having adventures in the medina. It's brilliant now to be able to welcome others into the house so they fall in love with the quirks of the medina too!

We're both freelancers, love travelling and have enjoyed using Airbnb ourselves.

Imane, (fourth photo) who works in Dar el Ma when we're not there, is from Fes and speaks Arabic, English and French. She's a fabulous cook and a wonderful friend :)
