Where you’ll be

Pāhoa, Hawaii, United States

Kalapana gardens is in what is considered the Hawaiian Kingdom by most locals here and is a great mix of generational Hawaiian farmers and fishermen, eccentric locals, care free hippies, rastafari, homesteaders, pakalolo co-op growers, transplants and curious vacationers. With structures that look straight out of Whosville it's unique, charming and definitely different then any other destination you've ever visited. The pace is slow and the aloha is abundant. It's also one of the driest places on the east side of Hawaii with absolutely stunning sun rises and Milky Way night skies you'll tell your grand kids about one day.

Other things to see and do around the area are New Kaimu black sand beach, Kahena black sand beach, the Puna coastal trail to Ha'ena (shipmans beach), hike or drive from McKenzie park to pohoiki surf spot with its newly formed crescent black sand beach and thermal heated healing ponds, Wednesday night market and Saturday farmers market at Uncle Roberts, Sunday is the Makuu farmers market. You can get food and supplies in the hippie outlaw town of Pahoa! I also do tours of the hidden gems of Puna that only locals know and other big tour companies don't do!! Just ask.

Staying here provides locals only access to the gardens and free on-site, front row parking to one of nature's coolest displays! Grab a beer, kick back and enjoy this amazing feat of nature.

Single Dad helping raising a 9 year old boy in Hawaiian style living. Where everyone is ohana, mālama ia Hawai'i (take care of Hawai'i), share the aloha and no shoes and shirt are the norm. For 17 years I have been fortunate to be a Hawaii resident. Living on multiple islands I decided Hawaii was home and sunny Kalapana was the paradise I was searching for.
Raising my son Z in Hawaiian style promotes his interaction with guests.
Feel free to ask him for his 9yr old opinion if he's around. He is fun and funny. Surfing, swimming, hiking, camping, exploring and gardening are what we do anytime we can.

During your stay

I'm a survival/adventure guide and enthusiast, Hawaiian history, stories & myths fan. I'm also a practicing minimalist and full time super dad! I keep my permanent Hawaii residence on the front 1/4 of the property. My travel van is at the front of the property and its completely separate from the Botanical garden and outside of the fenced in garden area you'll be reserving . I malama the aina here. However I'm usually out around the island guiding, fishing, hiking, surfing and camping myself or visiting/staying with my son and or family in Hilo when guests are staying at my cabin. I'm not around if guests are staying and will always give you notice if I'll be around the property. I also do fully guided private and group tours and this is usually the only time you'll see me if you've reserved one. I usually let the guest decide level of interaction. I love to spread the aloha so any questions you have feel free to ask! I'm always available thru the app and I try to respond with in a hour during the daytime and first thing the next day if you message at night.

I offer a 1/2 day tours the morning of check out for overnight reservations and any full day for multi day reservations starting between 8/9am finishing between 12pm/1pm.

1. Half day guided tour of hidden gems around Kalapana, Kaimu and Kapoho. I will bring you to spots other tour companies don't go and you won't find in any book or map. This tour runs from 8/9am until around 12pm/1pm and is $100 per person, $180 for a couple and $300 for up to 4 people using your rental car for the tour.
