About this listing
Cosy little apartment in "arrière maison" (away from the street, so nice and quiet) in one of Brussels best areas for bars and restaurants, close to the touristic center and to Midi station and 2 minutes from Porte de Hal metro.
These pictures were taken when my last long term tenant lived here. The pictures on the wall were hers and there's less orange now.
Furnished, renovated studio with fully equipped kitchen and shower-room. Mezzanine double bed, above the kitchen and the shower room. Sound-insulated floor and ceiling.
The studio is in my house, behind an apartment building, making it very quiet in spite of its location in the heart of Saint-Gilles. Located between the Porte de Hal (metro, bus and tram) and the Parvis de Saint-Gilles (bus, tram), a stone's throw from shops, supermarkets, excellent bars, restaurants and a daily street market.
Place du Jeu de Balle (in the Marolles area), with its daily flea market, is a 10 minute walk away, the Grand Place about 25 minutes (or just a few stops by tram) - basically everything you could need is within a few minutes and excellent public transport is less than a hundred meters away.
Your apartment is entirely yours.
Interaction with Guests
If you need anything during your stay, I'm just next door and happy to help, be it for information/advice or any problems you might encounter during your stay.
St Gilles is a fantastic neighbourhood. The Parvis de St Gilles is a stone's-throw away and offers uncountable bars with terraces (well... uncountable after sampling a few belgian beers anyway (; ).
The Porte de Hal (a stone's throw in the other direction) is the last remaining gate tower of medieval Brussels' city walls and now houses a museum of arms and armor. There are also tonnes of places to eat around, covering every budget - and supermarkets and plenty of night-shops in case you suddenly run out of something. Generally, the area is a buzzing hive of activity, though my house is protected from noise as it's an "arrière-maison", meaning you have to go through a first building and a courtyard to get to it - the best of both worlds. Also you'll be near the Marolles area, which is a very nice place to stroll and hosts a daily flea-market selling everything from clothes and antiques to stuffed animals. And it's also only a 20 - 25 minute walk to the old center of town: the Grand Place for example (and less if you hop on a tram for a few stops). All in all the neighbourhood is great and extremely well located for getting around the rest of Brussels, or further afield too (as Midi train station is very close too).
Two of Brussels's main public transport lines (the circle metro and the 'premetro' - which is basically a tram that goes underground from north to south, through the center of town) meet at Porte de Halle station, 2 minutes walk away. It coudn't be more convenient.
Other Things to Note
I provide clean sheets and clean towels. You'll have access to my broadband (VDSL) wireless internet.
Should you have any diabilities impairing your mobility, I don't recommend my studio, as the stairs to the mezzanine bed are a little steep.
Babies are welcome (even if they cry a lot at night): first because the flat is fairly well sound-insulated, but also because, as a father myself, I know what it's like (: So no worries about disturbance if she/he has difficult nights. If you could bring your own portable baby cot though, that would be best. Otherwise do let me know well in advance and I'll try to organise something.
Oh yes, I have a cat - he doesn't go into your studio though - so I think it would only be a problem for you if you're really heavily allergic. I had a tenant for a year who was very allergic to cats (something we only discovered after the cat moved in) - but she was fine in the studio.
As an added end-note - I seem to fall short on cleanliness according to my star ratings - whilst cleaning is indeed not my speciality, I clean thoroughly between every guest (and, obviously, replace all bedding and towels) and try to make it perfect, but obviously I'm missing something and am not meeting everyone's standards. I can't afford a cleaner to come to my place - but if there's anything you find unsatisfactory I would really appreciate your letting me know so that I can improve.
I hope my high ratings in every other area will be enough to convince you to book.
Thanks - and maybe see you soon?
Enjoy your stay!
Oh and please don't let the cat in to your studio or out of the courtyard as you pass through on the way to your apartment.
And it's a non-smoking room (given that lots of people pass through and most dislike the smell of stale cigarette smoke).
Also, please try to close the front door gently as it made of metal and bangs quite hard otherwise, disturbing some of the neighbours.
Location: Heart of St-Gilles, just near Midi station, right next to metro and tram stations - can walk to center (though I prefer St-Gilles generally)
This was our second stay at Adam's and it was just as great as the first! We were very happy to be back in Brussels, and in this apartment and neighborhood in particular.
On the first day, as we missed a bus, we arrived quite late. Adam, however, came out to welcome us and happily help with our large luggage. The room was the same as in the pictures. It was just enough for two people and had everything we needed. The location was good as well not only for there were many restaurants and markets nearby but also for the house was close to subway and bus stations. But we mostly preferred walking to the city center and it did not take long. Adam also really cared about our comport and convenience while we were staying. We appreciated that.
The location was very central, clean and comfortable and very reasonably priced. Adam provided good instructions in advance for finding the flat and was very flexible with checking-in/out. The weather was very hot and so the fan very much appreciated! I would return here again.
It's a really good place and area, the host is very kind and thoughtful, easy to contact and responsible. Very recommended!
I have asked Wilson to explain what his problems were with housekeeping and have received no reply. I believe he misunderstood me when I explained the cooker, which works fine in spite of the previous guest blaming it for fuses blowing (no problem since that guest left) - I ony mentionned it just in case. The lightbulbs, as I explained to him, had blown during the previous guest's stay (long term) and I had not had time, since seeing, to remedy the situation. I am replacing these bulbs, waiting for an internet delivery. Complaining about the mezzanine is rather absurd given that I'm very clear about it in the description of the studio. All in all, I'm not happy with this comment as I asked wilson several times if everything was fine and he kept smiling and saying it was great... I really thought everything was fine.
The studio was small but very functional. Although the bed is in the mezzanine it was comfortable and easily accessible. There is everything you need to cook simple meals. We loved the neighborhood with the big square, the church and the daily market and the fact that it is within walking distance to the city center (25min to Grand Place). Adam was responsive and friendly. Would stay there again.
About the Host, Adam
I'm 37, a sculptor, a father - a recovering philosopher. I bought my house back when I had a job that paid cash rather than satisfaction - now renting one floor I've fitted out as a studio so as to gain some extra income.
I'm very easy-going and I'm likely to be around some of the time, though not in your way as our living spaces will be completely separate.
I'm very much open to constructive criticism - especially whilst you're here: let me know if there's anything you need and I'll do my best to get it for you (eg. extra kitchenware, cleaning products, new lightbulbs, coathangers, etc. but also what do you think the studio needs in order to be more comfortable/welcoming)
Ah oui - je parles aussi français (couramment). Y hablo un pocito de espanol tambien.
