The Bonte Bovenhuis is a stylish stay at our boutique hotel that we opened in 2022 in the fully renovated and preserved 17th century Rijksmonument in the rural village of Westzaan. A beautiful place in the Zaanstreek, where we are happy to welcome you to our restaurant and picnic garden.

The space
The Bonte Bovenhuis is a stylish stay in our boutique hotel that we have just opened in the fully renovated and preserved 17th century national monument in the rural village of Westzaan. A beautiful place in the Zaanstreek, where we are happy to welcome you to our restaurant and picnic garden.

Is this place no longer available at your desired time? Take a look at the other two stays we offer through my profile.

An (64) and Tjits (63) have designed this space and kept the monumental wooden beams full in view. With ‘t Zaanse yellow, textiles and prints, they have plenty of coziness in this spacious guest house. It Sits just above the restaurant, so a bite and drink are never far!

The Bonte Upper House is located on the first floor on a landing that you share with one other stay. A steep turnstile - where the bags of flour used to be pulled up - you come upstairs. From this space you have a view over the meadows and the garden at the back and you look out over the street in the front. The bathroom is located in the stay in an enclosed space.

Make yourself at home by having a cup of coffee or tea or having lunch in the kitchenette. The kitchenette has a number of basic amenities such as: percolator, kettle, plates, glasses and cutlery. There are no amenities to cook or warm up food.

During the day, many of our guests explore the famous, historic Zaanstreek, go energetic SUP'pen (rental 100 meters away), go to Amsterdam or laze in the garden.

Our restaurant and our chef Syl are known in our region for celebrating local ingredients: the meat we serve, for example, comes mainly from the organic cows that can be seen from our garden, but we also carry an extensive vegan menu. It is wise to reserve a table in advance. Surf online to Jongwijs Westzaan and find our website where you can book.

Our garden has a wide view of the meadows and hostess Nel likes to guide the guests of our boutique hotel.

Guest access
Of course you have access to your own accommodation. In addition, be welcome in the adjacent restaurant for a cup of coffee or a delicious lunch or dinner. The terrace in front, and the picnic garden behind, are freely accessible and are wonderful places to chill in the sun or to enjoy the view.

Other things to note
You will stay in an ancient monument. Despite the fact that the property has been modernized from head to toe (while maintaining the authentic elements and atmosphere), you may hear sounds from the restaurant.

Please note: some steps and stairs are typically seventeenth century, in other words: steep. To reach the studio you walk up a narrow spiral staircase when entering. If you have a bad leg, it can be a challenge.

Accessibility / transport:
Our boutique hotel and restaurant are located in the rural village of Westzaan, not far from Zaandam and Amsterdam. No bus stops in front of the door so the last part (5 kilometers) from/to the nearest station - Station Zaandam - is a challenge. There are buses but they take a long time and from/to the nearest stop it is 2 kilometers walk. Most people therefore take a bicycle or a taxi from Zaandam Station. Do you want to go to Amsterdam or do you come from there? Then the train to/from Zaandam Station is also the best option. A direct taxi can also, which will take about 25 minutes. Are you coming from Schiphol Airport or do you want to go there? From/to Zaandam Station there is a direct train. A taxi will take about 25 minutes from door to door. Are you coming by car yourself? Parking is possible on private property and otherwise 100 meters away in a parking lot.

We have a total of five bicycles available for our guests. Cost: €12.50 per bike per day. Please note: only available when you book it in advance by sending us a message. Then we will prepare the bicycle(s).

Meet your hosts

My work: Social entrepreneur
I spend too much time: Collecting centuries old items
Together with family and friends, we wanted to make a place to enjoy the most beautiful and delicious things in our region. And we now enjoy doing that, in our beloved national monument from 1635 (!) in typical Dutch rural village of Westzaan, just steps from Amsterdam. There we welcome our guests in three completely restored monumental guest houses in 2022, our restaurant, bakery and garden. Our restaurant and our chef Syl are known in our region for celebrating local ingredients: the meat we serve, for example, comes mainly from the organic cows that can be seen from our garden, but we also carry an extensive vegan menu. Our friend Lex bakes the bread and banquet in the building as a third generation of artisan baker. Our garden has a wide view of the meadows and hostess Nel likes to guide the guests of our boutique hotel. Many of our guests wake up in the morning to the smell of fresh croissants from baker Lex, and from the fresh coffee from the organic beans roasted a few miles away (in prison, but that's a long story...). During the day, many of our guests explore the famous, historic Zaanstreek, go energetic SUP'pen (rental 100 meters away), go to Amsterdam or laze in the garden. Our adage is: nothing is necessary and (almost) everything is allowed. Welcome! Nel, chef Syl, bakery Lex and Simon
