Our home is located in the historic Mid-City neighborhood, which was one of the first neighborhoods to spring back after extensive flooding due to Hurricane Katrina. Mid-City is located, as the name indicates, in the middle of New Orleans on what was once the backslope of the Mississippi River natural levee. Our home was built around 1910 and is a typical New Orleans-style shotgun house. In New Orleans at the time of construction, the shotgun house utilized a minimized lot frontage, on which taxes were based. The houses were also built without hallways and closets, which would have been counted as “rooms” for tax purposes. The origin of the building style and the name itself may trace back to Haitian influences on New Orleans, as many Afro-Haitian slaves lived in this area.
Our house was recently featured on the HBO series "Treme", as the law office of the character Toni Bernette (played by Melissa Leo) and also as part of the interior of the home of Creighton Bernette (played by John Goodman).
Mid-City is a diverse neighborhood with its own distinctive flavor. Bars and restaurants in this area are largely patronized by locals, so the neighborhood provides an escape from the more touristy areas of the city, while still allowing easy access to the French Quarter via the Canal Streetcar Line.

This was our second time staying in Erin and her family's lovely home within two weeks. The room was just what we needed after driving for 14 hrs and the private entrance is great! Please see my last review for all the great details of this perfect location. Will stay here again in the future.
Erin's beautiful house was just as described and pictured. It far exceeded our expectations and since this was my first airbnb experience, we were unsure of how it would go! We were blown away by the lovely room and all the amenities! Th bed is so luxurious and soft, we didn't want to get up! And the shower and bath tub were perfect! It was nice to have awesome bath products to relax with after a long day of walking! Erin let us know she was only a text away, and she always answered me very quickly after I texted her. She and her partner were very kind upon arrival, and even let my friend borrow their only iPhone 5 charger for the night! The garden and pathway to the room was so lovely, and these cute little dragonflies flitted around us as we walked back. The room is in the back, and was super quiet. The street was also surprisingly super quiet, and we had no problems getting to sleep! The wonderful down pillows on the ultra perfect bed made it also easy to fall asleep. There were also robes provided and snacks and drinks that came in handy after getting back to the room after walking around the quarter. Erin was so nice and they were both very laid back about checkout time. We got back a little later than expected on the day of checkout and she was very understanding and told us to take our time! She also has a handmade information book that gives you do's and don'ts of Nola and gives a ton of restaurant recommendations! It was about a five minute walk to the stop for the canal street car and we took a taxi home at night from the quarter and paid about 10$ which isn't terrible. Y friend and I both have said whenever we come back to nola, their place is the only place we wanna stay! Luxury at a great affordable price.
Staying in this classic New Orleans shotgun house was delightful. The room is beautiful and well-maintained, and the fully-stocked bathroom was wonderful. Erin is super nice and even held onto our luggage for several hours so that we could continue exploring New Orleans after new guests had checked into the room.
The neighborhood is quaint and full of lovely homes (lots of photo ops). We felt safe and enjoyed walking to the nearby Ruby Slipper for breakfast 2 days in a row (thereby avoiding the massive line at the French Quarter location). This home is a great home base for exploring New Orleans!
Was able to stay in Erin's beautiful home on a road trip with my little brother. The location is great, 2 blocks from the Canal st street car (10 min ride to Bourbon st) & very close to some amazing restaurants. Erin and her family were very helpful and their property is even more beautiful then in the pictures. We will be staying at Erin's house again.
Great location- beautiful room and easy access to the city.
Very friendly and professional host.
Erin’s guest room is the perfect combination of staying in a typical and authentic house in Mid City as well as tasting the city life of New Orleans when exploring the French Quarter. The room was nice, the bed was very comfortable and everything including the bathroom was very clean. Erin was a great host; she welcomed us and advised us on where to eat and what to do, which were great suggestions! We had a wonderful stay at her place, as it was a nice and quiet get away from the hectic center, without losing the feeling of being in New Orleans. We would definitely recommend Erin’s place!
My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon... And his 40th bday... And our good friend's wedding! We really could not have been happier! It was beautiful and just a short ride away from the Canal Street Car which brings you right into the French Quarter. A taxi was also just a quick and cheap fare ! Our Hosts were incredibly thoughtful ! They made sure we had everything we needed and then some! We will def be back! Sure quiet and clean as well! Oh! And she left us snacks , drinks, travel info, and just about anything else we would have needed!!!
Erin's place was immaculate. A lovely shotgun (i.e. long and narrow) home right in the heart of Mid City.
Upon arrival I was greeted by Erin who showed me where I would be staying for the next week. It's a private room that is attached to the rest of the house in the back. It has a separate entrance and door, so you get your own key, which gives you all the privacy you need. The bathroom is roomy, with a nice shower and plenty of hot water. There's even face wash, shampoo, conditioner and body wash to use.
Erin really put a lot of thought into decorating and supplying the room, with little snacks and drinks, a couple of bathrobes, a personal coffee maker and a booklet with helpful tips on local places to eat and drink. It was a good hybrid of coziness and hotel amenities.
Because it is an attached room to the rest of the house, you do hear everything between the two rooms. This didn't bother me but it might be bothersome if you're looking for total peace and quiet.
To give you some context for the location, Mid City is about a 10 minute car ride from the French Quarter where everything is happening, including the conference I was in town for. You can get there easily enough by taking the street care, which is only a couple of blocks from Erin's place and is $1.25 for a one-way trip (exact change, so I recommend keeping some quarters and dollar bills for just this).
As Erin instructs, I wouldn't walk from the French Quarter back home, but cabs are easy enough to find. Catching a cab from her house, or along Canal Street where the streetcar runs was hit or miss, so expect to either call a cab or leave plenty of time to catch the streetcar into the Quarter, which come every 15 or 20 minutes.
The local bars and pubs around Erin's place are very "local" and cool, although, some (e.g. my parents) would consider them a little dodgy. I went to one my first night and had a great night drinking and eating on the patio out front. I was told by the bartender that that's the real New Orleans, not the Bourbon Street affair everybody goes to. I'd agree.
Overall, a lovely place and a great trip.
Thanks for the feedback about the bricks. I do sometimes worry when it rains, particularly when I have elderly people staying with me, which isn't often but does happen sometimes. I will see about scrubbing them down with something to make them less slippery. Sorry you didn't see more of us! Please come again, and we'll have a night out. :)
