The Space

10 minutes to the beach and 10 minutes to Ojai and 10 minutes to Casitas Lake from this amazing secluded 1/2 acre compound on a breezy hill top. Enjoy unobstructed views from flower gardens and private hot tub area. Peaceful setting with fountain in garden, fire-pits, and enclosed yard. Outdoor spaces include patio with bar-bque and wicker table and chaise, another area with comfortable patio set for star gazing at night with fire-pit and the hot tub area with amazing views and extra wide chaise. Hot tub is treated without chlorine. Healthy alternative. Flowers everywhere!

The Cozy Cottage is charming and very light with 2 bedrooms, 1 full bath. It is very comfortable and beautifully furnished with country decor including many antiques and lovely artwork. Sleeps four comfortably. Organic King and Queen beds with fine linens and lots of pillows. Full kitchen includes new stainless appliances including Gas Range, Refrigerator with water filter and ice dispenser, and full sized Dishwasher. Amenities includes two flatscreen TVs in each bedroom, dvd players, cable, WiFi, Bose radio, ipad dock, landline and Washer Dryer.

This is a wonderful place to retreat if you are writing a book or simply want to take time for yourselves.

Nearby Ojai and Ventura have great Farmer's Markets, terrific hiking trails and shops and restaurants. Ventura has wonderful beaches. Santa Barbara is also close (30-45 minutes by car) and a fun place to spend the day. Very scenic and many attraction to visit.

The property has lots of parking, but also available nearby is Public Transportation/ Bus (two blocks away) will take you to Ventura or Ojai. In Ventura catch the Surfliner ((website hidden)) to anywhere up and down the California Coast! The train is great for bicyclists.

The local bike trail, a few block from the house, goes all the way from Ojai through Oak View to the ocean in Ventura and connects to another bike route along the coast.

Interaction with Guests

I am very private and honor guests privacy and solitude. I will initially explain how things work and show them around. Often I travel so when guests come, I may leave after a few days of their settling in, sometimes, but not always,.

The Neighborhood

Rural feeling very close to highways and cities. Peaceful and quiet.

Getting around

Bus to Ventura and Ojai one block from house.

  • Great little cottage! Interior is all updated w/ beautiful furnishings and is incredibly well-stocked. Neighborhood is mostly horse farms... very relaxing. Just under a 15 minute drive to downtown Ojai. There are several large communal outdoor areas, so would be perfect for hosting a group event. My favorite thing was the attention to healthy living with filtered drinking and bathing water as well as the non-chlorinated hot tub. Would definitely go back!

  • Beautiful, peaceful and private property. We just spent 4 amazing days at Carlisle's Charming Country Cottage -- and we wish we could have stayed longer.

Like you, we read all the other glowing reviews, but here are some notes I think might help future guests choose this amazing location. (As long as it's available when we want to go back, that is.)

    1. Really fast wifi. A very unexpected bonus, this was not a tired dial-up connection.

    2. Amazing kitchen. If you're going up to explore the farmers market (and you should) you will be able to make amazing dishes in this kitchen. Every utensil was at our fingertips. Enough dishes to serve an army. All the spices you won't think you'll need 'til the last moment. Stainless steel and cast iron pots and pans hanging on the walls, begging to be cooked with.

    3. Yes, the house is small and the bedrooms are cozy, but not in a negative way. We weren't tripping over one another.

    4. There is so much outdoor living space. I must have missed that in the initial descriptions, as we were very surprised. Four different patio areas, one covered, so you can be outside even in the hottest part of the day. Ideal for entertaining.

    5. We left our dogs at home, but for those who bring their furry friends the upper, grassy area you see in the photo is enclosed, but on two sides, the fence is low, maybe 3 feet. So if Fido can jump, you'll want to keep an eye on him.

    6. There's so much additional property outside the fenced area. Sadly, the hot tub was out for maintenance, but there was a bonus above-ground pool toward the bottom of the hill that we enjoyed instead. And below that there were a variety of fruit trees and even grapes!

Flowers and vegetables were growing everywhere on the property. We met the gardener at one point and he told us to take anything we found that was ripe.
There were also hilarious birds to watch every morning.

The cottage is amazing at night, as dusk falls the outdoor lanterns and lights start popping on, and soon you find yourself in the perfect location for star gazing.

Overall, we fell in love with the little world that Carlisle has so lovingly created. We didn't feel like we were in a rental, we felt like we were staying in the home of a dear friend.

Pro Tips: Couldn't find any games, so make sure you bring your own. You won't want to be watching TV. But there was cable and movie channels, and it looked like you could have connected a roku if you brought one with you.

For hot water in the tub, turn to the right. It's labeled backwards. :)

  • I booked the cottage for my parents who came from Germany to visit. I live nearby with my family and I have 3 small kids. At first my parents were afraid, that the cottage was to beautiful and had too much decoration to be there with my little ones. They thought the kids might damage something. But being there 8 days they enjoyed the cottage very much. Everything you need in the kitchen is there, great for cooking! The spaces outside are wonderful. You are in an oasis of flowers and birds,no noise at all. The hot tub was lovely even for the kids to have a short swim. It is a lovely place to stay and when my parents come back they will book it again. Thank you Carisle for being such a great host.

  • This was a lovely cottage not too far out, yet in the peaceful countryside. We had a big fenced yard that the dogs liked and there were several seating areas for the humans - a nice dining table with a grill, a seating area with a fire pit, a lounge area under cover from the sun and separate from the yard, a hot tub and seating area. One of our favorite activities was drinking wine from the nearby vineyards while watching the birds at the feeder. The house was clean and the beds were very nice. The kitchen was well-stocked with pots and pans and modern appliances. As there were lots and lots of artistic knick-knacks about, I'm not sure this would be a good place for very young children, but our dogs enjoyed the heck out of it! Carlisle is a wonderful person and we enjoyed excellent communications with her. If you are looking for that home-away-from home, this is the place!
