The space

Less than 90 minutes from the capital city of San Jose, this is your own charming two bedroom, two bath beach house in the gated and secure community of Punta Leona.
Villa Tranquilo offers a relaxed, soothing retreat from the stresses of daily life while still being close enough to modern amenities to pamper yourself. The house is completely air conditioned with WiFi, TV/DVD, stereo system and laundry room.
Playa Mantas beach is just steps from the house and top-rated Playa Blanca is a short, five minute walk away. There is a small restaurant/bar at Playa Blanca and a full-time lifeguard station.
You'll be amazed at the wildlife you will see right from your balcony! Scarlet macaws, monkeys, iguanas, raccoons, and toucans can be seen at various times of the year right in the backyard. Listen to the sound of the surf, arrange for a massage or take advantage of the great hiking trails, zip line, butterfly farm and tennis courts. There's even a miniature golf course! All of these activities are available right on the property.
Punta Leona houses a hotel with swimming pools, restaurants, bars and even a chapel with Sunday services. The hotel can arrange day trips to Manuel Antonio State Park, Arenal Volcano, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, and many other outdoor activities.
We love our home and the restorative quality it has on our lives. We know it will do the same for you. Enjoy.

Guest access

Guests have access to our entire 2-bedroom , 2-bathroom house, with full balcony, gourmet kitchen and private laundry. In addition, they have access to all of the hotel grounds' amenities - pools, restaurants, beaches, zip-lines, tennis courts, water sports, hotel-sponsored activities, concierge services, etc. Please note: the hotel has recently limited car travel to Playa Blanca but it is only a 5+ minute walk from the house.

Interaction with guests

We interact as much or as little as our guests want. Usually there are a few online conversations prior to their stay to take care of the logistics and answer any questions. Once booked, we provide a Welcome Packet with directions, resort information, local activities, and emergency contact information both locally and for us.
Once arrived, we usually like to get an email or text just letting us know they've arrived safely. And after that we are here if they need us, but honestly we usually don't hear much from people until they are checking out to let us know they're on their way. In the rare occurrence that someone has had a question or an issue that they wanted to ask us, we've been able to respond quickly and take care of it.

The neighborhood

Ours is 1 of only 8 privately-owned homes overlooking Playa Mantas on the grounds of the Punta Leona Resort. Punta Leona is 10 minutes south of Carara National Wildlife Park and 10 minutes north of the bustling surf town of Jaco, with a wide range of restaurants, bars, and shopping. On the road to Jaco is the world renowned hotel, spa and restaurant, Villa Caletas, where you can get a birds eye view of the ocean while enjoying a cocktail and listening to soothing music at sunset. Villa Caletas also offers Friday night concerts at certain times of the year.

Getting around

Everything on the grounds is walking distance, however, golf carts can be rented through the hotel for approx. $40/day if you prefer. Most people rent a car in San Jose for their trip but you can also take a taxi from the airport - the cost is $80-$100 each way. If you want to do some day-excursions the hotel staff can arrange a rental car or taxi service as well.

Other things to note

Punta Leona has a small convenience store and ice cream parlor on the property as well as two snack bars and 2 restaurants. There is also a nurses station on the property as well as a doctor should the need arise.

We loved this place! It is precisely as listed - but even better in person. Private villa atop a lovely beach resort - best of both worlds. The location is ideal - walk down some (somewhat steep) steps to Playa Mantas beach and literally a 5 minute beach stroll or walk on the road (if the tide is in) to even more gorgeous beach Playa Blanca (where we caught AMAZING sunsets and bigger waves than on Playa Mantas all day/evening - it is also part of the resort with nice casual restaurant on the beach that is open until 5pm daily). The wildlife visible from the perfectly appointed deck is quite overwhelming: endless scarlet macaw sitings (one afternoon, we literally had eight macaws clearly visible from the deck with the naked eye - incredible for pictures), large iguanas, butterflies, parakeets, toucans, pelicans, hummingbirds, frigate birds, lovely sandpipers and other beach birds, orange and purple crabs on the beach, and tons of species I can't name. There is a guided bird walk several mornings/wk from the resort and Alex (the guide), is delightful and super knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. The breakfast buffet is delicious and netted in and we saw monkeys several mornings while dining!! You are so close to Carara National Wildlife Park (10 mins from entrance to the resort) where we got to see three different types of monkeys (howlers, capuchin, spider), poison dart frogs, and all kinds of birds - just used one of the guides there to help us identify everything. We zip lined less than a half hour away, kids took surf lessons in Jaco, we did a river tour to see the crocodiles and amazing water fowl, hiked down to swim in the cool crisp freshwater pools of a huge waterfall - claimed to be the highest in Costa Rica - also only about 15 mins away - if you drive all the way to the top there are gardens and walk to the waterfall - we stopped before the top for the super intense hike down through gorgeous terrain and then lugged ourselves all the way up and it was so totally worth it! Steve & Shannon have an incredibly detailed and helpful guide to the house and area with fabulous recommendations which we really appreciated. We loved and followed all their restaurant and adventure suggestions! Can't wait to get back. I read through all the reviews - perhaps it was the season - but we had none of the few issues one of the others mentioned - ants outside but not at all in the villa... They also have a fantastic movie collection (mostly R rated quality films) but we were too tired from all the adventures each day to stay awake except the very first night when we tried but all fell asleep while watching. Can't recommend too strongly. Can't wait to get back there!!

Our family of four (our girls are 9 and 7) had a fabulous time at Steve and Shannon's vacation home. The location and views were amazing. To get to the beach we only had to walk down about 3 flights of stairs behind the home. That descent takes you to Playa Mantas which has an inflatable playground for kids in the water. You can then climb over a small but steep land elevation (at anytime except high tide) to get to Playa Blanca, which we felt was the nicer beach of the two. Playa Blanca has less rocks and coral on the beach and beautiful white sand. If it's high tide you can walk 15 minutes on the upper road to the other beach. Both beaches have plenty of shade options which was important to us. Our children both loved playing in the waves at the beach. Both beach restaurants (at Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca) were great and we ate our lunches there if we weren't out for an excursion. We cooked our suppers back at the condo. We did the walking bird tour at the resort at 6:15am and would highly recommend it. The guide, Alex, brings a spotting scope so that you can see several local birds. As for the condo, it had everything we needed. The condo was very nicely decorated. There were a few ants, but that didn't bother us because we knew we were in Costa Rica. The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were very comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The bedrooms are on the lower level, which certainly helps with the heat at night. We really appreciated having a laundry machine at our disposal at the condo. As for our excursions that we chose to do on our 4 day stay; we did surfing lessons in Jaco, spent one full day on the resort (we had a sick kid that day) and did the Waterfall hike outside the Pura Vida gardens. The hike was a 3.5 hour hike and pretty tiring for everyone in the heat. However the waterfalls were pretty impressive and the swim at the pool on the return leg was refreshing. Make sure you bring a litre of water for each person if you do this hike. We stopped to see the crocodiles under the bridge at Tarcoles after the hike.

This home is a beautiful and restful place to stay. The scenery is magnificent and the beach within a minutes walk. There is plenty to do for those who want action and plenty of opportunity to relax and listen to the waves. Steve and Shannon are great hosts and very helpful with any questions we had. A wonderful place to go!

The house has a most beautiful view over the Pacific Ocean and it is very easy to access the beach below. The location is close to other houses as well as a hotel area with restaurants, pools and a small supermarket. During the Costa Rican holiday seasons (i.e. Christmas through January and around Easter) the hotel area and beaches are very lively. The Punta Leona area is very good for birding and with a high biodiversity. The location of the house is excellent for southbound excursions to Manuel Antonio and beyond and northwards to Monteverde. The house and surroundings are not suited for kids younger than 5-6 years old.

Response from Steve And Shannon:
Henning and his guests were all of adult ages and he is certainly correct in that our home s in no way childproofed. For inquiries about that we are very up front about it. It has tile floors, glass surfaces, aircraft-cable deck railings, etc. However, the hotel grounds are actually a popular destination for local and travelling families with small children. There is a shallow, children's pool and Playa Mantas, for example, has a very long sand shelf and is a very easy spot to enjoy the beach with little ones.

What a beautiful place to stay! Had such a relaxing time and thoroughly enjoyed the house, beach & wildlife. Steve and Shannon were great hosts who provided us with excellent information before we travelled so we got the best out of our holiday.

The view at Steve and Shannon's place was amazing! Waking up to that every morning was a real treat. Overall the house was in very good shape. There was a bit of an ant infestation, but it's the rainforest so it did not bother us too much. We went during rainy season but the weather was beautiful. I would definitely recommend staying here. It would be helpful if you knew Spanish though! We struggled a little bit with communication.

My wife Shannon and I both work in the film industry in Hollywood. We love design and architecture probably because we work in such a visual medium. Shannon takes classes is welding and pottery and I like to fiddle with motorcycles and older British cars.

When we purchased Villa 501 we decided to model our house in a clean modern look similar to a "W" hotel but with a Costa Rican feel. At the time, we lived in a 1920's traditional California Spanish style home and wanted to do something which we hoped would have a "Zen" quality to it.
