Comfy bed for better sleep

The room-darkening shades and extra bedding are loved by guests.
Welcome to the Duluth Hiker House, a city home for people who love the outdoors! Hike down to the lake on the Superior Hiking Trail or go mountain biking in Hartley Park, both from the end of our block. The lake, Canal Park and downtown are just 10 minutes away by car.
At the end of your day, relax in front of the fireplace or luxuriate in the double whirlpool or steam shower of our delightful home.

The space
Our art-filled 1923 house feels a bit like a cabin, with a loft that includes a master suite with a queen bed and a bath with large stone-lined steam shower and a double whirlpool tub that overlooks the woods and a small stream.
The living room has wool rugs, a gas fireplace, high-definition smart TV and board games. Our kitchen is very well-stocked and has a dishwasher, microwave and gas stove plus lots of cookware and serving dishes.
There are patios with perennial gardens in front and in the fenced side yard of our quarter-acre corner lot.
Our lower level has a bedroom, a study with futon sofa and a bathroom with shower. This level is not suitable for small children because it's two levels from the main bedroom.
Like nearly every house in Duluth, we don't have air-conditioning because it's so rarely needed. However, we do have fans for you to use.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to hang out on the front deck, side patio and yard. Bird-watchers may enjoy listening for birdsong in our back-yard woods.

Other things to note
Be sure to bring warm clothes for your forays down to the lake, which generally is 10 degrees cooler but sometimes feels 30 degrees cooler because of the breezes.
We have filled the benches in our entry with all kinds of hiker accessories — water bottles, sunblock, insect repellent, umbrellas, rain ponchos, hats — and our guests are welcome to use them. In winter, you can borrow our snowshoes and ice cleats. We have extra warm hats and mittens, too.

Neighborhood highlights

Our house is right off Woodland Avenue, three miles from the 21st Avenue East exit from I-35 and a 10-minute drive from Canal Park.
It's in a residential neighborhood up the hill, where it's quite a bit warmer than the lakeshore.
In winter, it gets more snow, and there's cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in Hartley Park. Birders love Hartley and also the migrating birds that stop at the pond of Forest Hill Cemetery, next door.
We're between Hartley and two cemeteries, so there's a lot of wildlife traffic, including an occasional bear. In fall, deer come every night to eat the apples in our yard.
If you walk east from the end of our street, you can get to Hawk Ridge on the Superior Hiking Trail, and if you walk west, you can get to the Rose Garden, Canal Park and the great trail segments in West Duluth.
You can buy groceries at Mount Royal Market off Woodland Avenue, across from UMD, or at Woodland Market, a mile past our house.

My husband and I love the outdoors, especially hiking, bicycling, kayaking and skiing. Because Duluth is such a fantastic place to do those things, we bought a house and spent nearly every weekend there until we moved to Europe. Now, we want our guests to enjoy Duluth as much as we did (and still do, just not as often). The slogan for our online travel guide MidwestWeekends is "Life's too short to stay home.'' That's also our personal slogan.
