Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
Cosy comfort while exploring the wilds of Exmoor. Home to some of the best walking in the UK.

Nestled in the heart of rolling Exmoor countryside and the idyllic hamlet of Oare with a view of the church that famously features in R D’s Blackmore’s romantic novel Lorna Doone. A stunning base to explore Exmoor national park and experience the beauty of deep combes, dramatic coastline, red deer and Exmoor ponies.

Dogs welcome.

The space
The Storehouse is on the first floor of a courtyard barn and has been revived and designed in rustic-chic style with pared-back and painted floors, French linen and reclaimed wood all part of the charm. The open plan living space is cosily converted with a wood burning stove and dining table by the window with a view over the courtyard. Set back from the main house and with its own private parking and area for outdoor dining.

A large basket of firewood is provided for your stay. For additional firewood a donation can be made to our tree planting project.

Guest access
Full of rustic charm, the storehouse sits within a 169-acre family estate with free roaming sheep, two donkeys and quite often a herd of grazing deer. From here you can pick up a number of beautiful walks in the area past wooded river valleys and ancient stone bridges, with cream teas in the picturesque setting of Malmsmead, only a mile away.

Other things to note
Being on the first floor of a barn the stairs are steep - there is no stair gate but doors can be shut to stop children reaching these if necessary.
Living in the middle of a national park comes with many many positives, but a few compromises. Internet speed might not be the connectivity you’re used to, but hopefully the countryside tv that live streams 24/7 will be more than ample compensation for this.
Farmers will thank you for well behaved dogs and shutting gates behind you.
There is a one-off £25 charge for any dogs staying at the storehouse.

Neighborhood highlights

Set in a beautifully verdant valley made famous by RD Blackmore, its ideal location means it is the perfect base to explore the nearby picture postcard villages and hamlets and dramatic coastline - where the moor quite literally meets the sea. Follow the winding banks of Oare Water to Robber’s Bridge, or a mile in the other direction and across the border to Devon and the start of the Lorna Doone Valley Trail in Malmesmead. Close to hand, there’s Dunkery Beacon, the charming coastal villages of Lynton and Lynmouth, the quiet harbour of Porlock Weir, and in Dunster, the most perfectly preserved medieval village in England. Exmoor National Park has been designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve with amazingly clear skies and wonderful opportunities for stargazing.
