My experience was great! This the place you want to stay if you want to see more of the really Costa Rica. It's a community not a tourist destination. Everyone who works here is very helpful and can arrange anything you might need. I personally enjoyed the tents more then a room. It's a great place to meet fellow travels.
I stayed in a private jungle tent and loved it. It was more than enough space for one person and could easily fit 3 or 4 people with the bunk beds.
The common lounge area outside with jacuzzi and hammocks was perfect for a much needed break after hiking. The food and service was remarkable. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. I wish I could have spent more than one night there.
Definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Not only was it an amazing experience sleeping in a tent in the rainforest, but the people we met were equally amazing. Essence offers such a unique experience that really affords you the opportunity to get outside of your comfort zone and exceed all expectations for your trip! The family style cooking and eating was wonderful and allowed us to meet some really extraordinary new friends. Melissa and Nico are awesome and made us feel at home immediately. Melissa hooked us up with a great local food spot and Nico help us design our route to our next location. The route cut our trip time in half and we saw some really gorgeous scenery. Would go back in a heartbeat!
As we were dropped off, Nico greeted us and made us feel welcome. He booked all our transfers and excursions for us. What a paradise this place is! We loved our safari tent...we decided to stay another day. Loved the vegetarian meals by Martin, Melissa's yoga, the tours of the grounds. What a great climate and place to stay. If your lucky enough to get a tent with a balcony you are in for a treat!
Fantastic staff, the place is amazing with permaculture, vegetarian restaurant and not to forget the yoga deck! The hostel has a great view situated overlooking Lake Arenal. Would recommend it to anyone and go back any day if I could!
Essence was a very unique experience! Great location and view. My favourite was the communal meal preparation - the food was delicious! Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Next time I would stay two weeks at Essence, not just one night. Too short a stay in paradise. The safari tents are very comfortable, as are the common amenities: two showers, two toilet stalls, a common room that is half-outdoorsy and equipped with a kitchenette for tea (brewed from herbs outside the door), and a welcoming restaurant/office/Internet area. All is clean and perfectly functional. The view of the lake is breathtaking. Melissa was kind in showing us around. She gives massages and teaches yoga in the mornings (another thing I will do when I come back some day). A garden 15 minutes' walk from the cabins/tents sounds delightful, although I didn't get a chance to visit. I did however sit by the hammocks and gaze out at the view for ages. Profound contentment. Don't miss it.
