The Space

This very secluded 1940's remodeled homestead cabin has mountain views and is surrounded by hundreds of acres of pristine desert. The sun set view is GORGEOUS from the back porch swing, and the stars are...well...STELLAR, to say the least!

The home is "handi-capable" with bathroom bars and extra wide doorways.
There are 3 outdoor patios, 2 swing-sets, outdoor fire pit, gas BBQ, indoor fireplace, indoor and outdoor showers, and 2 freight container art studios available for your use.
There is laundry and full kitchen.
The home is set up perfectly for 4 people inside, but there is unlimited camping outside, making the space perfect for events for up to 100 people. There have been weddings, art events, etc here. (additional fees for events and groups over 4)
Season perks:
Spring: open windows, windy warm days and amazing wildflowers everywhere
Summer: relaxing outdoor horse tub and shower, and indoor swamp cooler
Fall: warm, open-door days and cozy fireplace nights
Winter: cozy rotatable fireplace in cabin, outdoor fire pit, patio heater, and passive window solar

The property is located on a dirt road 12 minutes from downtown Joshua Tree and a just a few more minutes to Joshua Tree National Park with great hiking, biking, and rock-climbing.

  • Shangrila is an incredible place. Absolutely serene and beautiful, with infinite views in every direction. The house is impeccably decorated and I felt completely at home. The photos don't do it justice. Everything from the choice in artwork to the choice in books that line the walls -- this is what airbnb was built for: the unique experience of staying in a place otherwise impossible to visit. Drew was a fantastic host, very responsive, and super friendly. I can't wait to come back if it's not booked up.

  • I had a smile on my face the ENTIRE time that I was at this dreamy home in the desert. Everything about our stay was relaxing and perfect. Drew was the most attentive and thorough host and the cabin was equipt with so many perfect touches. I love going to new places and trying new things, seldomly repeating but in the case of the Shangri-La, as long it is available when I plan my next desert trip you'd better bet you'll find me staying there!

  • I had a great time at Shangrila. I can't say enough about how beautiful it and the surrounding area are. It was very easy to figure out where things were due to lots of helpful notes around the house! Drew gave me all the information that I needed and I would definitely stay again.

  • Drew's house was So beautiful and comfortable!! The explanation of all the little quirks was perfect and easy to follow. I felt luxurious in the big space and all of the amenities were top of the line. My favorite aspect however was the incredible view from the back porch. Just sitting and reading and looking out into the open space was priceless. My daughters had a blast on the swing set and playing in the horse pool. We had such a wonderful time and cant wait to go back!!!!

  • My fiancee and I got married in Joshua Tree National Park this weekend and we used Shangri-La as our base camp. It was so awesome! The kitchen and tiki bar were perfect areas for entertaining our parents and the views were amazing. Thanks again Drew!

  • I stayed at Shangri La for a week in April. Although I never met Drew, he was in contact with me throughout my visit, even emailing me to tell me about the lunar eclipse that was happening while I was there! Shangri La is a magical place, as the name suggests, and it is clear how much thought and care Drew has put in to creating this special retreat. I will be back!

  • My wife and I used Shangri-La as "base camp" for a couple days of hiking in Joshua Tree National Park, and we couldn't have been more thrilled with our choice. Staying at Drew's place is an "act of discovery." Even on our final morning we kept noticing more details of the artwork, landscaping, and interior design elements. Although we didn't meet Drew in person, the cabin tells an incredible story about him and his dedication to this desert haven. Above all, the incredible light and views stand out. Entering the main living space on a clear morning is totally exhilarating. The light changes throughout the day, giving the place a magical quality. Awesome!
