The space
Welcome to Hygge House. A place designed to provide you with everything you need to have a cozy relaxing experience. Minimal furnishings with an Alaskan vibe. The house was built in 1977 and still retains several characteristic features of that time period. You'll know them when you see them ;-)

It has a spacious layout with tons of natural light. Nature is a huge inspiration for the house as well as locally featured art and crafts.

For your spa experience; robes, towels and slippers are provided for use during your stay. Additionally, a heated towel warmer will further spoil you.

Fresh Fox Spring water is available in the bubbler and we provide North Pole Coffee Company coffee and Sipping Streams Tea for your stay.

Enjoy the use of complimentary Winter items like Aurora viewing gear, snowshoes, and even towels for Chena Hot Springs. We also have Summer gear like fishing poles, picnic blankets and a cooler for your use.

Whether you stay in or go outside, you have ample opportunity to explore something new...from games, books and puzzles to looking for tracks in the snow, capturing the Aurora or discovering new plants. We hope you will create experiences to last a lifetime.

Guest access
Guests have complete access to the main floor of the house including the garage. The basement will not be occupied during your stay. The only off-limit areas are the basement, the housekeeping closet in the main hallway, the maintenance and the boiler rooms in the garage.

Other things to note
🚭 No marijuana use or consumption anywhere on property.
No smoking of any kind (cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, etc), vaping, or e-cigarettes on the property--this includes in and around the house, garage, the hot tub, in vehicle and outdoors.

Neighborhood highlights

Why Hygge House? Because we believe hygge embodies what our retreat is all about. Hygge (hue-geh) is a Danish word used to acknowledge a moment or a feeling or a space that embodies coziness, something special, something unique and many times with a tie to nature. While we do not live in Scandinavia, many of our Interior Alaska life joys and challenges are similar to those found in other Northern countries. Both in the Winter as well as in the Summer.

Our retreat is all about being cozy and appreciating the simple things in life. While we can’t create a hyggelig feeling for anyone, we can certainly provide the environment and set the stage for them to experience their own hyggelig moments.

Hygge House is on a 10-acre property on top of Cranberry Ridge in the hills just North of Fairbanks. It is in an ideal spot to base out of for adventures. The City Skyline, the Alaska Range, Denali and the Goldstream Valley are all visible from the property. As the seasons change so do the views. In Winter, the views are very clear, but in Summer when all the foliage is leafed out you have to explore a little bit for the views. The property and area is safe and quiet. And quite lovely.

The Aurora is visible from many angles on the property. You can either just look out the front window, sit in the hot tub and watch the colors dance over head or head out for a walk to catch different shots. Aurora Season is around August 21st to April 21st.

Wildlife roam as they please. Moose, Fox, Lynx, Snowshoe Hare and Porcupine are some of the common visitors. Boreal Owls love to hang out along the trail behind the house. You may even see our state bird; the beautiful Willow Ptarmigan. Ravens, Chickadees, Woodpeckers and Grouse live here year round while other migratory birds will hang out for the Summer.

The gardens around the property are evolving and the trails to wander are infinite. The house is set in a Boreal Forest with Birch, Aspen, Poplar and White Spruce to the south and Black Spruce on the North side. Access to the Skyridge Trail system is super easy to get to.

In Winter, the property is typically warmer than in the city or any lower valley location. When the inversion effect is in place, temps will be 10-30 degrees warmer.

While the area is quiet, you will most likely hear the sounds of chickens from our property next door. Although they are a few hundred yards away, the hills are alive with the sounds of egg laying music.

We are a family owned and operated business. No property managers...all communication is from us to you, period. We want you to have the best experience possible.

Lastly, we are huge supporters of local. We support local artists, producers, and businesses as much as we possibly can. You will find featured products throughout our home.

We love Alaska! We moved and traveled for decades serving in the US Air Force. We finally found our dream property and are now raising our kids here on our hobby farm (right next door). We’re always outside and learning something new. From tapping Birch trees to collecting Porcupine quills there is always an adventure in our pocket! We love to share what we’ve learned in living our unique Alaskan lifestyle and welcome you to the Last Frontier!
