About this listing

This Scandinavian-style cabin is peaceful, uncluttered, and full of light. It's an ideal location, in a small community full of interesting houses, fields, and woods, 20 mins from Asheville, 10 minutes from hiking and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The space

We designed and built this log cabin in 1999 after a trip to Norway and Sweden where we were inspired by the use of natural interior wood. Our intention was to have an aesthetic, simple, and peaceful retreat from our busy lives. Towards that end, the cabin has many windows, beautiful cherry floors, and unfinished wood walls so that it is filled with light and the lovely scent of new wood. It is uncluttered and furnished with a mix of old and new: an antique dining table and hutch share space with the modern (newly installed) kitchen with a propane stove and granite countertop. The full bathroom has a lovely antique tub and a hand-held shower. There is a small, private bedroom downstairs with a full bed, two twins beds in the loft and the futon sofa and chair each open into beds as well. Although the cabin is small (800 sq ft), the great room (with a wood stove) has a cathedral ceiling so that it feels much larger than it is. Both the great room and the bedroom open to a large deck with a gas grill. We are only 5 mins from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 10 min from Weaverville, and 20 mins from downtown Asheville – a wonderful city full of restaurants, music, and life. In the woods, on a south-facing slope, the cabin is private but not isolated as it is the only seasonal dwelling on 88 acres in a small “intentional” community of artists, retired professors, and professionals. This is the perfect zen retreat for a lone writer or even a small family looking for an escape to the mountains. (There's a nice little kids' area in the loft with a few books, games, art supplies, and toys.)

The cabin has a nice little wood stove which you are welcome to use, as long as you're familiar with how to safely operate one. We recently installed a mini-split heat pump (controlled with a remote) that heats and air conditions the cabin. It uses much less energy and emits far less carbon dioxide than typical heating/cooling units.

House Rules

1. There's room for two cars. No parking is allowed on the community road, so be sure to park at the bottom of the driveway.

2. There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the premises!

3. Although we love animals, we're sorry that we cannot accommodate pets.

4. Before you depart, please...
Remove sheet and pillow cases
Wash dishes and put them away
Return any furniture you moved

5. IMPORTANT: This is an eco-friendly pesticide-free environment! As professional biologists, we feel very strongly about this. Unlike big box hotels, we do not spray for insects and spiders. And we are a cabin in the woods. During late summer, you may see the occasional (harmless) spider or spider-web in the house and most certainly on the outside of the house.

Please be assured that we have thoroughly cleaned the cabin.

The cabin was well appointed for a weekend in the woods. The directions were good and we had no trouble finding the place. It was a very quite setting but and easy drive into Asheville. We also discovered the little town of Weaverville which was 15 minutes away. It had several nice restaurants and a cool microbrewery. The only challenge for us was the lack of a shower. There was a tub with a hand held spray nozzle. The hose was so short I could not even hold it over my head. It was a challenge taking a shower crouched down with only one hand. The other frustrating thing was the lack of a door knob on the bathroom. We are a family of four so the bathroom was getting a workout . Someone would have to push the door closed from the outside so the person on the inside could get it to latch. All in all those are minor issues, we would book this place again. We loved the layout, the kids loved the loft. We were bracing for a weekend of no wifi, cable or cell phones but we were pleasantly surprised to find that Verizon had great coverage in the area.

Wonderful stay! Great setting and very peaceful. The location was within easy driving distance of Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, and provided welcome solitude. We arrived at night, so the driveway entrance was a little challenging (it's well marked, but quite steep). We were there for my son's graduation and the cabin was a perfect location. Everything was set up as promised. There is a large coffee maker as well as hot pot for boiling water which were both welcome - bring your own coffee! Refrigerator is relatively small - suitable for cold drinks and leftovers, but not for large trays of food. Full-size stove with oven, but no microwave. Cell phone service is hit and miss - I had good signal with Verizon, but my wife lost signal with AT&T.

This cabin is a perfect place for a getaway! The host made the experience easy and enjoyable. The cabin had everything we needed and more! I would recommend this place to anyone looking to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of nature while being comfortable. The pictures do not even do the cabin justice as it is even better in person.

Drew, Sarah, Barrie, and family have something very special in this small-but-mighty cabin in the woods. If you are looking for hustle and bustle, Wifi - even reception, or a quick fix...don't hit submit! If you are looking for meaningfully slow and intentional experiences to connect with real people in sublime nature in real time, then take the "trust fall" driveway plunge into the perfect respite. A cozy and relaxing cabin in absolutely gorgeous Weaverville, you will be minutes from Hot Springs, Asheville, and a stone's throw from some amazing overlooks, driving, hiking, and biking all along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The price, accommodations, and experience are impossible to beat! Do yourself, your friends, or your family a huge favor and book a stay at this wonderful place.

Drew And Sarah User Profile

We are two college professors who live and teach in Maine. Sarah also does bird behavior research in Portland, OR. We have a lovely little cabin in North Carolina near Asheville where Drew grew up and where we still have family. We love to travel and to meet new people. We also now have a charming historic house with 2 apartments right in the best part of Portland, Maine that we have available with Airbnb. And, keeping with the "Portland" theme, we've just added our little Portland, Oregon house as an Airbnb rental for select months.
