This Scandinavian-style cabin is peaceful, uncluttered, and full of light. It's an ideal location, in a small community full of interesting houses, fields, and woods, 20 mins from Asheville, 10 minutes from hiking and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Perfect romantic getaway for couples or home base for families.

The space
We designed and built this log cabin after a trip to Norway and Sweden where we were inspired by the use of natural interior wood. Our intention was to have an aesthetic, simple, and peaceful retreat from our busy lives. Towards that end, the cabin has many windows, beautiful ash floors, and unfinished wood walls so that it is filled with light and the lovely scent of wood. It is uncluttered and furnished with a mix of old and new: an antique dining table and hutch share space with the modern (newly installed) kitchen with a propane stove and granite countertop. The full bathroom has a lovely antique tub and a hand-held shower.

The cabin is most appropriate for couples and families. It's not an ideal place for large groups of adults, as there is only one bathroom and friendly neighbors who appreciate quiet at night. There is a small, private bedroom downstairs with a queen bed, a great room with a sofa that opens into a full bed, and a spacious loft with two single beds (as well as two floor futons for small children). Although the cabin is small (800 sq ft), the great room (with a wood stove) has a cathedral ceiling so that it feels much larger than it is. Both the great room and the bedroom open to a large deck with a gas grill and table and chairs.

We are only 5 mins from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 10 min from Weaverville, and 20 mins from downtown Asheville – a wonderful city full of restaurants, music, and life. In the woods, on a south-facing slope, the cabin is private but not isolated as it is the only seasonal dwelling on 88 acres in a small “intentional” community of artists, retired professors, and professionals. This is the perfect zen retreat for a lone writer, romantic getaway for a couple, or home base for a family looking for an escape to the mountains. (There's a nice little kids' area in the loft with a few books, games, art supplies, and toys.)

The cabin has a nice little wood stove which you are welcome to use, as long as you're familiar with how to safely operate one. We recently installed a mini-split heat pump (controlled with a remote) that heats and air conditions the cabin. It uses much less energy and emits far less carbon dioxide than typical heating/cooling units.

We are two college professors who live and teach in Maine. Sarah also does bird behavior research in Portland, OR. We have a lovely little cabin in North Carolina near Asheville where Drew grew up and where we still have family. We love to travel and to meet new people. We also now have a charming historic house with 2 apartments right in the best part of Portland, Maine that we have available with Airbnb. And, keeping with the "Portland" theme, we've just added our little Portland, Oregon house as an Airbnb rental for select months.
