The Space

We designed and built this log cabin in 1999 after a trip to Norway and Sweden where we were inspired by the use of natural interior wood. Our intention was to have an aesthetic, simple, and peaceful retreat from our busy lives. Towards that end, the cabin has many windows, beautiful cherry floors, and unfinished wood walls so that it is filled with light and the lovely scent of new wood. It is uncluttered and furnished with a mix of old and new: an antique dining table and hutch share space with the modern (newly installed) kitchen with a propane stove and granite countertop. The full bathroom has a lovely antique tub and a hand-held shower. There is a small, private bedroom downstairs with a full bed, two twins beds in the loft and the futon sofa and chair each open into beds as well. Although the cabin is small (800 sq ft), the great room (with a wood stove) has a cathedral ceiling so that it feels much larger than it is. Both the great room and the bedroom open to a large deck with a gas grill. We are only 5 mins from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 10 min from Weaverville, and 20 mins from downtown Asheville – a wonderful city full of restaurants, music, and life. In the woods, on a south-facing slope, the cabin is private but not isolated as it is the only seasonal dwelling on 88 acres in a small “intentional” community of artists, retired professors, and professionals. This is the perfect zen retreat for a lone writer or even a small family looking for an escape to the mountains. (There's a nice little kids' area in the loft with a few books, games, art supplies, and toys.)

As the cold weather approaches, if you wish to book into November or beyond, please be aware that the cabin is heated with the wood stove (instructions and wood provided!) and two space heaters. We have found this to be perfectly fine except for perhaps the coldest days of mid-winter .

  • The host was excellent answering any questions about directions and the area. Everything in the cabin was excellent and comfortable. We enjoyed the time we spent in it. Very relaxing environment, it accommodated our 6 member family with ease. It was nice to have the grill/deck for one dinner and the kitchen for breakfasts/lunch. Very clean, everything worked, no issues what so ever. This beats staying at a hotel by miles.

  • We loved our stay at the cabin! A very peaceful setting with easy access to the parkway. Drew and Barrie were very prompt with their communication and supplied lots of valuable info about activities in the area. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • This is a beautiful mountain side cabin . Quick response to making reservation for our trip planning to NC. Our family found peace a quite during our stay. We played games and enjoyed a BBQ during the holiday stay. It was a quick trip to Asheville and down town Weaverville is 5 minutes. Oh and our little ones loved a bubble bath in the claw tub. Thank you!

  • Wow! What a retreat! I didn't expect the community and the property to be so easy to find and so beautiful! I was really surprised at how close you are to everything you may need or want to do. The cabin was kept very clean and gave us no problems at all. We had such a nice time enjoying coffee on the porch, or doing yoga in the sun with the provided mat. There was enough to keep us busy in the cabin. I would definitely stay here again. You're off the grid and it's so worth it! My family had a beautiful Memorial Day weekend in an unforgettable home. Thank you Drew and family again! You are all so pleasant and generous. We hope to be back soon :)

  • The Barton cabin is in a lovely private, serene spot, easily accessible while feeling remote. It was a perfect base for us while in the area for our son's college graduation followed by several days of recreation which included multi-pitch rock climbing Table Rock at Linville Gorge, whitewater paddling the Tuck, botanizing the Mountains to the Sea Trail up past Rattlesnake Lodge, Mela's Indian buffet in Asheville and massages by Caroline and Greg Zocher at Mountain Massage Studio in Weaverville.

The cabin interior is light and spacious, with everything we needed; very comfortable for the four of us, 2 adults and 2 young ones just out of college.
The large deck served as a great drying station for our kids' soaked wilderness gear and equipment.

While much of our time we were exploring the mountains and rivers of western North Carolina, every moment we spent at the cabin far exceeded what we had planned and hoped for. We had to tear ourselves away even after delaying our original departure date by a couple of days.

Thank you Drew, et al and Barrie. When can we come again?!

  • We had a fantastic time at this cabin! Incredible light and space, felt much bigger than I thought it was going to be and a great wood burning fireplace as well. It is very close to Weaverville and just a short hop into Asheville. Really enjoyed the cabin, highly recommended!

  • This cabin is simply impeccable. Exactly the perfect space we needed after a four day drive relocating from LA to Asheville. Drew is super laid back and a breeze to interact with. Highly recommended. Thanks Drew.

  • We stayed at Drew's cabin this past weekend and had a wonderful time. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. Drew responded quickly and was easy to communicate with, both to set up the reservation and to get directions and other info. We were able to find the cabin using his directions in the dark. If you are afraid of bees and ants, it's probably not the right choice, but we found it charming and liked the remote and natural location, which was still very close to asheville.

  • For Louisiana flatlanders, drew's cabin in the mountains pleased us immensely. The online photos accurately describe the space, and Drew and his sister were pleasant and accommodating.

We are two college professors who live and teach in Maine. We have a lovely little cabin in North Carolina near Asheville where Drew grew up and where we still have family. We love to travel and to meet new people.
