Where you’ll be

Heemstede, Noord-Holland, Netherlands

Our house is an oasis in a busy world. Heemstede is next to Haarlem, 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam and close to beaches and Schiphol airport. Most of Heemstede commutes to Amsterdam. The house is located on the “Dreef”, the Dutch word for boulevard where the larger Heemsteede homes are located. Our home has a large garden in the back with 3 patios. Ample room to enjoy a glass of wine, smell the herbs and flowers and listen to the birds. After all, these are the important things in life.

Things to do near the house:
- Bike or bus to Haarlem
- Walk along the Spaarne River
- Bike or bus to the beach
- Bike or bus to the Keukenhof and bulb fields in the spring
- Shopping at the Binnenweg and Jan van Goyen Straat
- Hiking in the dunes
-Rent a "whisper boat"

I am a recently retired elementary school teacher, my Canadian husband Peter is a former executive and we are enjoying our retirement. We love traveling and are frequent airbnb guests as well as hosts. We have two adult children whose careers have taken them globetrotting and so our house has always been full of guests coming and going which is how we got started with Airbnb a few years ago. I take care of our guests and Peter loves to cook. A winning combination after all these years.

During your stay

Peter and I are in our 50’s. I work part time as a teacher and Peter works both at home and in the office for an investment company. We have both travelled a great deal both for business and pleasure, and have always preferred small hotels and bed and breakfasts where you feel like a guest rather than a customer. We try to extend that feeling to our guests by taking the time to exchange travel stories and give directions or advice on attractions in Amsterdam and Haarlem.
P.S. Peter is an epicure (foodie). Instead of eating out, ask Peter to fix you a traditional Dutch meal with local ingredients or just let yourself be spoiled. €20 to €30pp depending on the menu. By reservation only. If he has time, Peter will take you along to the best butchers, cheese shops and fish mongers.
