Step into island life, relax into the land on a 100 acre working farm. This sunny home invites you to read in the window seat, grill on the deck, cozy up to the woodstove or get creative in the well-stocked kitchen. Explore the pastures, marsh, and ponds. Take a yoga class. Fire up the sauna. Say hello to the cattle. Feed the pigs.

Nestled next to the pond and removed from the activity of barn, gardens and bakery the Field House invites you to enjoy your own retreat or engage with the farm.

The space
You are entering a working farm and community when you rent the Field House. There are three families that live on the farm and often interns living here as well. We all share the land with our Murray Grey cattle, heritage pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, a multitude of swallows in summer, eagles, owls, and countless other critters. The house itself is light filled and efficient. We have invested in a weather proofing retrofit and mini-split heat pump so that the guest house reflects our values of climate change mitigation. We also value good food and love to cook. We set up the kitchen so it is ready for meals to be made with cast iron pans, baking supplies and all the basic ingredients to get you going. We want you to enjoy!

Guest access
The Field House has its own private yard and south facing deck. To the east is the swimming pond, sauna and Down Dog Yoga Studio. Just north up the drive is the big barn, our house, Barn Owl Bakery, the garden, hoophouse, orchard and field crops. To the south hidden in the trees is the compost facility and depending on the season, pigs or cattle. To the west there is a big fir with an eagle's nest, pasture and marshes. You are welcome to wander and roam, to swim in the pond, use the sauna, take a class in the yoga studio or use for your own practice between classes, stroll the gardens, pick up some beef or pork from self service farm stand and pick fruit in season. Guests often tag along to feed the pigs or get their hands dirty in the garden. We love it when people engage with the land.

Other things to note
We love children! Please know that this is a working farm and supervise your kids appropriately. There is a pond, electric fences, trucks and tractors driving, and livestock. Children should be with an adult when exploring beyond the Field House yard. There is an assortment of games and toys in the baskets under the window seat. And fields, woods and gardens to explore, ponds to swim in and animals watch.

There is a wood fired sauna. We do charge a $25 lighting fee. Please arrange. It is right next to the pond so you can do the cold water plunge (exciting in winter!). There is also a shower.

The Down Dog Yoga studio is located on Midnight's Farm as well. Check the calendar on our website for class availability. Private yoga instruction can be arranged.

This is a working farm so there may be occasional machine noise (haying, tractor, compost operation) and some truck/equipment traffic on the farm road near the house.

Location

Lopez Island, Washington, United States

Lopez Island has a wealth of public access to beaches, both dramatic high rocky bluffs with swift tides below, long sandy walks and pocket bays with pebbles you want to put in your pocket and take home. There is a fabulous Farmer's Market on Saturdays. If you are here on a Fri, Sat or Sun stop by the "Take it or Leave it" at the dump and look for fun, free stuff. The island is great for biking- some people call it flat but it really just has small ups and downs!

You will drive right past our house on the way to the Field House. We both have deep roots on the Island. David started coming here with his family when he was 6 and Faith grew up here, in a little house her family built, in her great grandparents old alfalfa field. David was a commercial fisherman in Alaska and bought the land after a good season. He is the visionary who planted the 1,000+ trees in the hedgerow, built the yoga studio, the sauna, etc. David raised two daughters on the farm (Ani in highschool and Vilina, off at college). Faith had left the island and returned after 18 years away. We met in 2009 and as they say "the rest is history"! On the farm David's passion is compost. He runs the only Department of Ecology approved on-farm composting facility in the County. We are proud to divert yard debris from the burn pile and keep that fertility bio-available by turning it into compost. Faith manages most of the gardens and the hoophouse. Both of us enjoy the animals- the Murray Grey cattle and the pigs. We are happy to show you around! We are committed to living solution to climate change and you will see many ways that this has influenced the design and managment choices on the farm. The Field House is a passive solar design and all the new buildings have high efficiency standards. We installed 9.5 KW photovoltaic array in 2013 and are able to meet most of our power needs. The compost facility is focused around diverting waste from burn piles and putting that carbon back into the soil where it can promote vitality, feed the plants and us! We rotionally graze our cattle to promote carbon sequestration in the soil. We are committed to sharing this beautiful place with the local Lopez community and beyond through the yoga studio, public walking trails and occasional community events. We are excited to open it up to visitors and provide an opportunity to step into island life with both its people and its solitude
