The space
New apartment in unspoiled fishing village of Santa Luzia, near Tavira.

This is a modern, comfortable apartment that sleeps 2 couples or a family of 5.
It has two bedrooms, both with double-beds, and two bathrooms. The main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with shower.
The lounge has a sleeper couch.
The apartment has a spacious open plan lounge and kitchen area that opens up on to a balcony with a barbeque; perfect for eating those big family lunches or enjoying sundowners while listening to the cicadas.
The kitchen has a dish-washer and washer-dryer, but you'll find the Algarve sunshine to be far more eco-efficient at drying clothes.
The swimming pool is on the other side of the communal garden - so, you are away from any noise.
There is broadband internet and digital-recorder cable television - most portuguese television is subtitled so you should be able to find a film to watch.
The apartment also has air conditioning - good for young ones if the heat is too much.
There are plenty of coffee shops nearby and there is a pleasant square a few minutes walk away where you can get fresh bread, have a coffee and watch the world go by.

Santa Luzia is one of the Algarve's best kept secrets. It's a quiet, friendly little fishing village extremely proud of its polvo (octopus) tradition. If you don't like octopus, there is a very good chance you will by the end of your holiday.
There is a lovely promenade to stroll along on the main street where you can choose from one of the many charming restaurants - although our favourite is tucked away in the back streets: ask a local for Alcatruz.

What's great about Santa Luzia is that it is 5 minutes by car to Tavira, the main town, and 2 minutes to Praia do Barril. So you have the peace and quiet of Santa Luzia but not far away you have more activities, shops and a typical Portuguese village to explore. Tavira itself is quite lovely. An old unspoilt town with several streets with restaurants, an old stone bridge over the sea inlet, a wonderful salt farm and the fish market. The ideal day is to pick up sardines, clams (ameijoas) and a few liters of fresh squeezed orange juice at the market in the morning then head back for a barbeque. There is also a mall out in Tavira if you fancy a bit of air conditioned shopping.

The beaches in this part of the world are across a lagoon. Praia Barril is a 2 minute drive down the road. You can either walk down a long path to the beach - quite nice as it gives you the sense you are in the wilderness - or take the mini-train. Alternatively, you can get the ferry to a more isolated beach, Praia da Terra Estreita, which has a cool beach bar, sun loungers and caipirinhas.
