Just blocks from Main Street, ours is a true family home with flexible sleeping arrangements in three cozy upstairs bedrooms, two full baths, a fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, living room, and sun room. Walk to everything!

The space
Since this is our second home, we outfitted it with all the things we need and enjoy as a family with young children. We tried to be somewhat true to the home's 1900's origins without making it feel like grandma's house, and we really tried to keep things simple, cozy, and bright! Since Dan is a software professional, we had to have wi fi, and we also really enjoy our Blu-rays and Roku-enabled network and cable channels and our streaming Netflix (in two rooms) and the kids love the Wii. The mattresses were all ones we would really want to sleep on. We didn't want hard "guest" beds and you won't have to tolerate them, either. Lastly, we hate fusty bedspreads, so the double and queen bed have duvets washed between guests along with the sheets and towels. Our cleaning service uses all organic products and vacuums with allergy filters.

Please note that, due to the life safety code and Rockland regulations, we can only host a maximum of 6 adults in our 3 bedroom home. Any additional guests must be children. Adults also may not sleep in our top bunks.

Also, our stairs may be a challenge to people with mobility issues, as all the bedrooms are upstairs. Feel free to ask!

We also provide a number of child-friendly amenities such as a two pack 'n plays, high chair, plastic dinnerware, and outlet plugs. Please let us know if you need them and we're happy to have them out for you.

Although we do not host guest pets, we do have our two cats with us a couple of times a year. The house is thoroughly cleaned after our departure, duvet covers are washed, and we don't have any carpets, but our home may not be the right fit for people with severe cat allergies. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions! Thank you.

Guest access
Guests will be able to enjoy everything in the home except our utility closet with next week's linens - and who needs to go in there? You and your family or friends will have the run of the house. We provide hand soap, paper products, and laundry soap.

Other things to note
PLEASE NOTE: The state of Maine has released the following rules for visitors: Residents of NH and VT may enter without restrictions. All other out-of-state visitors may book, but they must either quarantine for 14 days upon arrival OR show a negative COVID 19 test, administered in the past three days, for all adults in their party. No tests are yet avaialable to tourists inside Maine, although that capability is a goal for Phase 3. Therefore, please do not book with us unless you are confident you can bring a test from your home state. You will be asked to fill out a certificate of compliance upon arrival and possibly show your test results.

We cannot accept pets and we are strictly non-smoking. Two parking spaces are available in our driveway.

Due to local regulations, we can only accept a maximum of 6 adults. If you have 7 or 8 guests, the remainder must be children.

Top bunks are only suitable for children due to weight limits, but bottom bunks can sleep adults comfortably. Be sure to consider this when you imagine your sleeping arrangements.

Prices are based on four-person or fewer occupancy. For each additional person above four, we apply a $5 fee to help us cover the laundry costs.

Tons of local information and a history of the house is available on our extensive blog, which can be found with an internet search of our name and location. Thanks!

We have the required permit for short term rentals in Rockland. Our permit # is STR20-23.

Location

Rockland, Maine, United States

Our home is in a non-through street just blocks from bustling Main Street in Rockland's historic district. Built in 1904, our house is newer than many around us! We love our neighborhood, which is populated with long-term residents who live and work in Rockland. Please note that this is an in-town home, so it's possible you may hear some neighbor noise. Frankly, we find it extremely quiet most of the time, but our neighbors will have their gatherings and get up early for work and so on. This is not a rural property. Rather, it's a place where we love leaving our car in the driveway and strolling to a huge array of shops, restaurants, and other wonderful attractions like the Farnsworth museum and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.

Dan and I live in the busy suburbs of Northern Virginia and work in the fields of software and education. We have two middle school boys and lead a busy, if fairly ordinary, life full of work, classes, pick-ups, drop-offs, and swimming lessons. Work and family provide reasons for us to make our home in the D.C. area, but we yearn for a place with less emphasis on commuting and rat racing and more reliance on the simpler pursuits we remember from our childhoods. Our house in Maine is the realization of a long-time dream for us, and it made sense to share it with vacationers since we can't be there as often as we'd like to be. I'm the one who handles all our guest interactions, and I just love getting to know my guests and offering as many helpful suggestions as I can. We are unable to greet our visitors on the doorstep (you'll have a contactless arrival!) but I try to make up for that by giving as much assistance in advance as possible, and by being available via text, e-mail, and phone during the stay. On the rare occasion that something goes amiss during a guest stay, we do take it very much to heart. Our wish that you have a good experience is enormously sincere! Things I love: Jazz, wine, food (can I put food twice?), snowy days, and having coffee in our Rockland home on a summer morning. We spend much of our free time in Rockland, now, but I grew up moving around with the military. I have lived in many different states and also in Germany. I can speak pretty good German, if you need me to!

During your stay
We are geographically challenged, in that we do not live in Rockland year-round. Therefore, we depend on e-mail, text, and phone to help our guests, and we can refer any mechanical or cleaning issues to our wonderful local staff. Please know that we love you, but we cannot be there to greet you. However, we are very reachable and concerned that you have a good stay!

Select words from a few previous guests:

"We had a great family trip to the Sadler House in Rockland. It was exactly what we were looking for, a quaint little town and easily accessible. There were plenty of things to do in town and just a short drive away (breakwater lighthouse, Owl's head, etc). Alicia and Dan were extremely accessible in the weeks leading up to our trip (and even while we were there if needed) to answer questions, provide information, etc. The home was clean, adorable, and close to Main St. Would definitely recommend it to others!! (June 2015)

"We had a lovely stay at Alicia and Dan's place! Their home is warm, cozy and welcoming, and you can tell they've put a lot of love into the place. The house is very clean and equipped with everything you might need, and it's in a great location - walking distance from all manner of shops and restaurants on Main St and the water. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay, and both Alicia and Dan were always helpful and easy to deal with. We had a wonderful time - thanks for everything!" (January 2015)

"Enjoyed every step of the process. Alicia was so helpful from places to see and eat to even the minor details that made the stay so much more pleasant. The house itself was so clean, comfortable, and very well appointed. ...We personally really enjoyed having all the comforts of home, without the chaos of a hotel lobby. Great weekend trip and can't wait to go back!" (October 2014)

"Loved the house….lots of room and toys for my 5 year old grandson to play with. The kitchen was well stocked with more appliances than we were able to use in our short stay. Everything was clean. It was close to the downtown area. The beds were very comfortable and (although we didn't have the opportunity to use it) the yard was very inviting with shade trees and chairs. The owners responded to my questions promptly. Highly recommended..." (Sept. 2014)
