A place guests keep coming back to
Guests return year after year, with many calling it one of the most peaceful places they've stayed
This is a simple and rustic, yet comfortable, historic cabin on the South Toe River, near the fine natural wonders & recreational activities of the Mt. Mitchell area. The cabin offers an easy space to connect with nature, as well as the history of Appalachian culture and way of living. Situated 75' over the river, you’ll be enveloped in spectacular surroundings.
The space
*Please note that the most rustic element of the home is the outdoor showering.
There are few places in North Carolina as enchanting as the Celo area of South Toe Valley. This historic cabin joins Celo Community, the oldest running intentional community in the US, and Arthur Morgan School, a 50-year-old national model for progressive education of junior-highs. (But don't worry about hearing their delighted squeals! The school is a mile away, over the ridge.) Celo Community and the nearby Penland School of Crafts have enriched this area with a wealth of talent--particularly artistic talent, in the form of world class artisans working in wood, hot glass, pottery, fiber, and many other areas of fine and cultural arts.
You may want to use this cabin as your home-base for immersing yourself in the local culture, or for exploring some of the trails of the Black Mountain range, the tallest range east of the Rockies; maybe you're looking to unwind with some of Western North Carolina’s world-class trout fishing, or maybe you’re seeking a peaceful, unplugged getaway, where you can settle into a porch rocker with a good book, play some board games, curl up in the hammocks while you listen to the gentle roll of the river, and enjoy the shower/clawfoot tub in the woods, as well as the gas/wood fired hot tub perched on a platform in the forest.
Located twenty minutes from downtown Burnsville, where you’ll find delightful opportunities for dining, shopping, and activities, and twenty minutes in the other direction from Blue Ridge Parkway access. We're also just a short, relaxing ride from Asheville, and a only a couple hours east of the Piedmont Triad, yet it seems worlds away once you’re winding down this tree-lined gravel road.
Guest access
The whole 3 bedroom cabin, as well as the grounds, are yours to explore and enjoy. Mountain views, direct river access with seating and a great stretch of river for fishing, hot tub powered by wood (or by gas), kitchen with gas burners, flattop grill, and outdoor picnic area.
Other things to note
It's a good idea when initially arriving to try to make it in before dark; unless you are familiar with narrow, wooded mountain roads, it can be a bit tricky after dark.
*Please note that the third bedroom is downstairs, which must be accessed from outside the main cabin area.
