PLEASE CONSERVE WATER
Surprisingly fresh water is scarce on Maui. Kihei is a desert. Please conserve water using these local practices:
If you swim you'll likely shower several times a day so keep showers brief & air-dry; your skin will thank you.
- Vigorously shake sand off your beach towel…at the beach,
- Hang your beach towel in the shower area outdoors,
- Shower, rinse & remove your swimsuit in the outdoor shower.
- Hang swimwear out to dry in the tropical breeze there and it will be fresh and dry next time you swim. (You'll also prevent the painful rash that tropical sun, salt & sand produce when wet swimwear dries on your body.
-Accumulate a full load before running laundry & dishwasher.
OUTDOOR LIGHT & FAN
The light & fan on the lanai is controlled by both a power switch and a remote control. The power switch is on the wall behind the TV. Use the remote control to turn on light & control fan speed. Please turn off fans and lights when away from the house.
Tropical critters quickly swarm to sticky spills & sweet smells. Clean up spills immediately. Wipe kitchen counters & table after preparing or serving food. Store anything sweet, sticky or fragrant in the fridge. Dump bagged kitchen trash nightly in the large dumpster by the entry to Kula Estate.
Please clean and store kitchen wares as used. Wash pots, pans and wooden items by hand.
If you use the BBQ please dump cold ashes (morning) into a trash bag and place in dumpster.
Please keep the house clean during your stay. Remove shoes and rinse sand off outdoors. Shake out beach towels, rinse sand and swimsuits outside and hang them in the outdoor shower area to dry. They'll be fresh & dry by your next trip to the beach.
Your cleaning deposit goes to making up bedrooms, cleaning floors, counters & bathrooms and any final laundry after your departure.
Additional cleaning services during your stay may be available by advance request and are paid by guest directly to cleaners at the time of service.
The cleaning deposit does not cover leaving the house a mess. Dirty kitchen wares, sticky counters and floors, improperly stored food and full trash bins cause pest infestations. It is damage and will be charged against your damage deposit. It's pretty easy; on your departure day just plan to clean up before you head to the beach for a final swim.
The tennis court is shared - each home/group is slotted one-hour in the morning, and one hour in the afternoon. That said, usually you can play anytime you want. Bring your own rackets.
On your departure day please:
- Dump all trash in the dumpster.
- Run a final dishwasher load of any remaining kitchen wares.
- Close & lock all windows and doors.
- Turn off all lights, fans & other electrical appliances.
- Close shut-off valve to outdoor shower. (In wall behind Dryer.)
- Return keys to their original location.
It is super helpful to our cleaners to start a load of sheets in the laundry on your departure day. This is not required but it makes our cleaners happy and certainly helps earn you a glowing 'Host Review' on Airbnb.
Thank you for keeping our home in the spirit of Aloha.
Had a fantastic stay! The accommodations fit our group of 4 adults and 2 children perfectly. The grounds were lovely and well maintained, and we even got a few rounds of tennis in. Can't beat the walk to the beach - right across the street!
The host explained clearly how to get to house. Explained that there was some road construction right at the access point in to house. (Temporary road construction might not be there soon - AND this construction was not loud, we were unhampered by any noise.)
What a beautiful house. One master bed with bath, another LARGE bedroom, with access to the backyard full of mango trees, and a community shared tennis court behind the hedge of fruit bushes. Another medium sized bedroom that face the front of house.
Very easy access to beach, a three minute walk at most. An outdoor shower at the house itself, too. Well stocked kitchen. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Great house, location, and host! The bungalow felt very homey yet spacious, and was fairly accurate with the listing. It was very comfortable and well equipped with towels, kitchen equipment, etc. The outdoor shower came in handy after trips to the beach (which is right across the street) and the in-house washer/dryer units were very convenient even during our short stay. The backyard was also really nice for breakfast or dinner on the patio. The location is also great, being close to the beach and only a short drive from Safeway and the beach park. We also enjoyed walking around the neighborhood. Jim called me a few days before our stay and was really helpful in answering questions and giving recommendations for things to do in Maui. He also made it easy to contact him during our stay if we needed to.
The only small issues we had were that the house would get a little warm during the day, so we kept the windows open and the fans on. The sprinklers that went off in the middle of the night were also quite loud for the room in the front of the house.
Overall, the Kihei Bungalow was a comfortable and nice place to stay. We would highly recommend it and would love to return someday.
Great vacation, amazing gardens and location. Comfortable, casual home with some extras like much needed outdoor shower and washer dryer.
The beach was amazing and so convenient. Will definitely go back again.
The location for this house is pretty awesome. It is literally across the street from the beach access pathway and easy to get to from the back highway along Kihei. The beach chairs, mats and beach towels were very helpful to have on hand and it was nice to be able to sit on the lanai and watch birds, lizards and even a cat in the backyard and shared green area.
I saw others mentioning the house being warm and I agree. Even though we were here in December, we needed to have all the windows open and the fans going for it to feel comfortable during the day. There were ceiling fans and floor fans to use.
The common areas were nice, especially the kitchen with roomy fridge, great stove/oven and microwave. We were able to cook a couple nights during our stay including using the grill. The bedrooms felt a bit more like we were staying at Grandma's house though with that feeling that things have been around for a while. It was great to have the washer and dryer and outdoor shower to keep things clean.
We did have an issue with a toilet seat not being attached, but it was taken care of after about a day.
We had three couples staying here, that did make the one shared bathroom a bit in demand, but we managed. Otherwise it was enough space that we weren't on top of each other.
There did someone who consistently liked to rev their engines at this particular intersection at about 10pm, but the noise otherwise was fine. This is just far enough from the main drag that there wasn't a lot of traffic, though close enough to get to the restaurants, etc.
Jim's home couldn't be better located. It is as close to the beach as you can get (except, I suppose, the multimillion dollar ones on the beach are closer). Not having to load ourselves and our gear into the car everyday was so wonderful. He outdoor shower was nice to rinse off in after a morning in the sand. We were travelling with a small toddler. The large, relatively private, lanai and the surrounding gardens meant that our time spent at the home (while baby napped) still felt like a wonderful vacation.
Are there cockroaches? Yup. Are they big? They sure are. Were there tons of them? No. We maybe saw seven in ten days. We saw the odd one in the kitchen in the evening or first thing in the morning. At first, they were quite off putting but we quickly realized they are part of tropical living, they are harmless, and were great motivation to keep the kitchen clean.
Is the furniture/bedding a little dated? Perhaps. Does that really matter though?
The temperature didn't bother us. The fans and opened windows worked well enough for us in late November.
We did have an initial problem with the internet. The instructions to unplug and re plug were not sufficient. The management company was not available (a little frustrating) but after getting in touch with Jim he put a call into the internet provider who called me directly to walk me though fixing the problem.
Would we stay again? Most likely!
The highlights of our stay were -
1. Backyard - absolutely gorgeous. The mango trees and tennis court are great for a family vacation.
2. Location, location, location - the beach is indeed less than 50 steps away. And the views - especially the sunset - were stunning
3. Host - Jim was a very good host. We was always prompt in responding to my questions and was willing to go above and beyond to make our stay a success.
Our stay, however, was not a very pleasant one because of the following reasons -
1. Heat - this rental home does not have air conditioning. With a small baby we had a very tough time in the heat. Even though we kept all doors and windows open, this home is parallel to the direction of the wind - which makes it very hot. Our son got really cranky three out of the seven days because of the heat and cried un-consolably for hours.
2. Cockroaches - the home was swarming with cockroaches from 1cm to 2inches. We would find them in the shower, living room and the kitchen. My wife was very upset
3. Furnishings - this home has very spartan furnishings. Which does not do justice to the neighborhood's feel or the price for the rental.
4. Taxes - I have rented homes on Airbnb many times and the owners ensure that the taxes are included in the list price. Jim, however, makes you write out a separate check and sign another agreement outside of Airbnb's standard policies - which is time consuming and yet another thing to do in a busy professional's life
