Located behind the office of California's smallest weekly newspaper on Ferndale's historic Main St, the 7-room private quarters in a historic Victorian sleeps 4, has a cozy pub and offers a front row porch to watch the parades pass you by! Prime location! Park your car and leave it. We are steps away from Ferndale’s many restaurants, bars, shops and grocery store. Great hiking starts two blocks away. The redwoods are 30 mins; local beach, 10 mins. Bed tax part of price unlike other listings.

The space
Stop the presses! The Quarters is in the same historic Ferndale Victorian as the office of the 141-year old award-winning Ferndale Enterprise newspaper. (The Victorian, built in 1888, was featured in the 2001 movie "The Majestic" and the 1979 television film "Salem's Lot" as Barlow's Antique Shop.)

Located at the end of historic Main Street (right smack close to America's tallest lighted Xmas tree) The Enterprise office is open weekdays and your 7-room space is located behind the front office and has a separate entrance. Enjoy the Victorian's front porch and watch Ferndale's many parades or grab a cuppa of joe and sit and enjoy the magnificent view of Ferndale's historic hill cemetery. (Also featured in "The Majestic," starring Jim Carey.). Need to stretch your legs? Climb to the top of the cemetery and see an ocean view. Ferndale’s magnificent Russ Park is a five-minute walk away and offers miles of trails to hike.

The Quarters is just steps away from Ferndale's many restaurants, pubs and the town’s grocery store and offers a cozy, eclectic space with a sunny interior, fun vintage furnishings — including an upcycled farmhouse sink — a vintage Western Holly gas cookstove, an original clawfoot bathtub, a dining room "pew" from the local mortuary and a bar constructed from an old redwood welding bench!

Get a good night's sleep on The Quarters queen-size tempurpedic bed. The space also includes a second bedroom off of the common space with original wood tri-fold doors and a new queen bed. The two bedrooms are separated by the common space and they are ten feet apart.

We provide a few goodies in our Smeg fridge for you, including a couple of “cold ones” for your arrival and English muffins, eggs, jam, cereal for a light breakfast. We have different coffee and tea options and have creamer and honey on hand.

We do occasionally rent our half-acre back garden for bridal and baby showers, teas, tiny weddings etc. We recently completed the building of a unique atrium at the rear of our half acre. More details coming later on renting it for petite weddings etc. If an event is scheduled, most are during the afternoon and you may see guests walking up driveway. Contact us if you are interested in using our back garden for an event.

Guest access
Enjoy The Enterprise's front porch and its great location on Main Street. Take in the eclectic gardens. Looking for information on what to see and do in the area? We're always happy to give guests "inside scoop" on where to eat, hike and visit. Pick up a copy of our Souvenir Edition newspaper for a walking-tour map and details on all the fun Main Street stores.

Other things to note
We'll give you the password to our Wi-Fi and our Netflix and Amazon Prime to view on the living room's flat-screen telly. (Be sure and watch our downloaded copies of "The Majestic" and "Outbreak" - both filmed in Ferndale.) We have central heat and three electric "fireplaces." Our Western Holly vintage gas cooking stove (aka "Holly") is a workhorse but has a few quirks. The clawfoot tub is both a bathtub and shower. (Please note, some older guests have noted it's not easy getting in an out of the tall vintage tub . . . if access might be an issue for you, perhaps our home is not the best fit.) Your towels will be warm and cozy on our heated towel bar. The house is more than 135 years old; if you're looking for new and streamlined, our "wrinkles" are not for you. However, if you enjoy the feel of a historic house and its charm and quirkiness, this is the spot. Ferndale also has a much-loved volunteer fire department. If you hear the fire whistle, no need to panic. It summons the volunteers.

NO SMOKING OF ANYTHING! If you smoke marijuana, cigarettes or vape, please don't book our home. The smell lingers on your clothes (even when you smoke outside) and permeates our home.

No third-party bookings. We require those that stay to have their own Airbnb profile etc. We can’t accommodate early check ins or late check outs. Also, booked guests are only allowed on property. If you would like to invite non-booked guests to the property, please check with hosts first.

Please note, your nightly fee includes a 10 percent Ferndale city Transient Occupancy Tax and a 2 percent Humboldt County Lodging Alliance tax that we collect on behalf of the city and county before passing it on to their coffers. The tax is included in our listed nightly fee. We don’t collect it after you arrive like Ferndale hotels do that are listed on Airbnb.

Ferndale, California, United States

Ferndale is a throwback to a Norman Rockwell America and The Quarters is a perfect spot to experience the historic and unique Victorian Village. There's plenty to do within the city limits (leave your car keys behind) — shopping, dining, art galleries, well-preserved architecture, a world-class local museum, parades, firemen's games, fun runs, live music, live horse-racing at the Humboldt County Fair and our own repertory theatre — but there's also plenty to do within a short drive. The beach is a 10-minute scenic drive from The Quarters (no traffic and no parking issues) and features well-maintained BLM trails that deliver you onto, what is most times, a private beach. A trip over historic Fernbridge takes you to Loleta Cheese to pick up a picnic before you take in the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge (great place to walk the trails, all on flat land, and view wildlife and wetland habitat). Across Hwy 101 from the refuge is the College of the Redwoods botanical garden — another great picnic spot. The North Coast's inspiring redwoods are a 30-minute drive south and the waterfront town of Eureka is 20 minutes to the north.

Caroline, a British expat, has been the publisher/editor/reporter and chief bottle washer for the nationally-award winning Ferndale Enterprise for the past 20 years. Stuart was twice Ferndale mayor and for 22 years was the general manager of the Humboldt County Fair. The couple has three grown children, are attempting to be good vegans and love going "pickin'" for junk (aka treasures). They love welcoming guests to the "Victorian Village" and the beauty of the Lost Coast.

During your stay
We're available always by phone, text, email or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) if there are any issues. When you're our guest, we stay in a back apartment in the rear of The Quarters. Please note also that the barn (aka The Barndominium) you see in the outside picture of our cottage (set back from The Quarters but sharing a common driveway) was recently converted to a living quarters and is available to rent. So, you might see our other guests coming and going down the driveway etc. If you have a larger group, consider renting both properties!
