About this listing
There is no longer a bookcase providing a division between the sleeping and living space. there is a small white curtain instead giving minimal privacy.

On March 1, 2015 the cottage was completely repainted and redecorated though the pictures have not been updated.
Tucked away in a tranquil corner of the yard is the cottage, which includes a full (but mini!) kitchen, full bathroom, and a full size bed. There is also a couch, which folds into a futon. *Though there is no privacy between these two sleeping areas so plan accordingly* The cottage is equipped with wi-fi.
You may see my golden doodles, Sunshine and Keegan, coming and going in the yard. They love to be petted or have the ball thrown down the driveway for them to fetch!
Please also be aware that the cottage, although converted within the last 15 years, has been a standing structure here for over 60 years (the main house is over 100 years old). While there is a lot of character within the cottage and the entire property, this also comes with its own set of difficulties (ie. small spaces and dustier corners).
The cottage is a perfect place if you are planning on spending most of your time enjoying the multitude of options within San Diego, but is not always the best if you are planning on spending a lot of time in the house just relaxing as the space is not ideal for this. The cottage hosts a couple perfectly for a quick stay in San Diego or a single person here for a conference/longer stay. The cottage has also been popular with international travelers or road-trippers for just a quick stop over and a central place to stay. The cottage can sleep 4 maximum although it gets very crowded for that! Small children are ok with me but please be advised that Sunshine is over 75 pounds and while she would never intentionally hurt a child, she is big and could scare a child or knock one down on accident.
While the cottage opens up to the backyard and grill area this is a shared space between the main house and small guest house across the backyard. Our guests are welcome to use this space as much as they would like, however please know you will see us coming and going through here.
There is a hot tub on the property but due to its location (next to the main house's master bedroom) the hot tub is off limits to the cottage guests. Sorry!
I do have an ice chest, beach towels and beach chairs I would be happy to let you borrow for enjoying what San Diego is most famous for! Just ask.
Interaction with Guests
Due to my busy work schedule and the chauffeuring duties for my active teenager I may not have much face-to-face contact with my guests. However, I am always available via airbnb or text/email. You may see any number of my family members from time to time: nieces and nephew, daughters (4 total but only 1 still living at home), grandson (1 and 1 on the way), mother visiting from Oklahoma (once or twice a year) within the shared spaces and we will always say hello and help you with anything you may need while you are here. We will also not bother you. If we are having a family or friend get together by the grill, I will always let you know beforehand and invite you to join us!
The cottage is located in the beautiful neighborhood of South Park. Two blocks from the cottage are a couple of shops, a fantastic deli (Grant's), Hamilton's bar, The South Park Brewing Company, and Buona Forchetta restaurant. About a mile walk is the heart of South Park with boutique shops, a great burger place (The Station), and numerous other restaurants and bars. (At Rebecca's Coffeehouse you will see Rebecca making homemade scones to die for most mornings and The Big Kitchen is where Whoopie Goldberg got her start as a dishwasher!)
The majority of the homes in South Park are over 100 years old and most are in the Craftsman style of architecture. You will find historically registered homes on nearly every street in this small neighborhood. It's a great walking neighborhood.
There is plenty of street parking available in front of the house and we also do not have street sweepers so you don't have to worry about moving your car.
A short bike ride or car ride and you are able to be in North Park, Balboa Park, or downtown San Diego. (Bikes can be rented throughout South Park) and in about a 15 minute car ride our beautiful beaches are at your disposal! The cottage is located two blocks from the major bus route and is only about a $15.00 cab ride from the airport. There is also a large amount of Lyft cars available and Car2Go options if you are familiar with those options as well.
Other Things to Note
Just ask if you need anything else. I've been accused of being an over-sharer. You can take the Okie out of Oklahoma but...
This is a residential area so please be quiet when you come in late at night and please no late night noise after 10pm.
Feel free to make any suggestions or comments that you think we should change for our next guests. We try our best to create a good experience and always like to improve on things.
But mostly enjoy San Diego! Ask questions and for recommendations--I have lived here for over 12 years (when the only restaurant was a taco shop.) I'm always willing to discuss some of my favorite places! Not only am I a homeowner in South Park. I am also a business owner in South Park so I know the area.
small, but full-functioning kitchen. Equipped with an oven, stove top, microwave, toaster, and sink.
Joy was so nice and accommodating to me and the kids. The place was perfect and very convenient to Balboa park. Great neighborhood and restaurants! Highly recommend!
I stayed at Joy's cottage for 3 nights with 2 other friends and we all had a very pleasant experience. We felt right at home and welcome to be there. The bed was very comfy, and the place is kept clean. The location was perfect and central to anywhere you'd like to go in San Diego. I would highly recommend this cute little cottage to anyone looking for a place to stay. Thank you so much for the hospitality Joy!
What a wonderful experience. My friends and I really enjoyed our stay. The portrayal of the cottage was very forthcoming and described it to the tee. The area was peaceful and harmonious, and we basked in every moment of it. I as well as my friends, will definitely return to the cottage on my next collective trip to San Diego.
Thanks Joy, it was a pleasure to have met you, your family and Sunshine and your newest addition. Everyone was just so nice to us.
Joy was a great resource for my boyfriend and I during our visit! She was super responsive to questions via text and face to face. She helped us find some of the best restaurants in each part of San Diego that we explored. The cottage was cozy and had all that we needed for our stay (dishes/utensils/stove/coffee). It did get a bit warm if you don't leave the entrance door open, but I think mostly that was due to the abnormally hot temperatures during our weekend stay. The super fan worked great to cool us down during the evenings. The location of the cottage was so close to everything we needed! And we felt super safe in the area. There were a ton of shops and cafes/bars within a 10 minute walk from the cottage. Driving, its just a short 7-10 minute drive to get downtown. The back patio was lovely to sip wine and relax after a hot day... and if you like dogs her two pups are so sweet!
My friend who was visiting here from LA loved this place! He said it was very cozy and comfortable, and Joy was very welcoming. It was easy to find, and the private access was nice too.
Joy was a terrific hostess who kept in frequent contact with us throughout our stay. It was a hot weekend and she provided us with fans and made sure to check on us. Joy's house is located in an amazing location that was a 5$ lyft ride to places like North Park and Downtown. It is a charming neighborhood with plenty of historic value. I stayed here with three of my girlfriends and slept two per bed comfortably.

About the Host, Joy
"People never regret things that the DID do...only what they never did"
Hi, I'm Joy..I live in the main house with my teenage daughter and our two Goldendoodle's- Sunshine and our new puppy Keegan. (The cottage is in the backyard.) I work most days as a psychologist in my private practice in South Park and two days a week I work with military dependents in a school setting. When I'm not working I love being a mom, working in my garden, playing tennis and going to the gym while dreaming about my next travel adventure! I love meeting people and have often been accused of speaking to every person that I pass on the street. We have hosted foreign exchange students for the past 14 years and have made several trips to Europe to visit some of them. I am from Oklahoma and have been raised to show my Southern hospitality so I hope you enjoy my cottage.
